Do you say cell or mobile phone? | | I know both are correct, and mean exactly the same thing, but why the difference? In the United States, they're cell phones, in Australia they're mobile phones. I'm an Australian, but taught American English in Thailand for eleven years, so our text books always refered to them as cell phones, however they're sold in Thailand as mobile phones, so you can understand the confusion for learners. The same applies to laptop, and notebook computers. Can any myLotter tell why we have the two names for the one article. I'm guessing it's something to do with the company that invented the portable phone. I'd also like to know what you call them in your country, and where you're from. Thanks myLotters.

mipen2006 (2434) | 6 months ago | A very interesting reply, and thank you diamania. I have no idea, but you can unferstand the problem for students trying to learn English. As though the language isn't difficult enough, we want to give everything two names!

| | 2. ky1119 (591) | 6 months ago | I suppose it depends on where I am at and who I am talking to. When I'm at home, it's my cell. When I'm telling someone to call me, it's call my cell....not usually followed by phone, just cell. Now, when I'm at work, it's a different story. I work for a cell phone company so I typically refer to cell phones as mobile phones when I'm talking to my customers. It really just varies. I'm from the United States, by the way.

mipen2006 (2434) | 6 months ago | Thanks ky1119, your response adds to the confusion. Imagine how difficult it ir for someone trying to learn English. It's difficult enough without giving things two names, don't you think? Thanks for your input.

| | 4. thea09 (4548) | 6 months ago | Hello mipen, in England they are known as mobile phones and in America as cells, so when you have confusion abroad it is really over whether they use standard English or American English. For the people who commented below a 'cell' is actually a place within a police station where they lock up the bad guys, or an imnates room in a prison. I believe that here in Greece we are the only country which refers to a mobile phone as a 'kinito'.

mipen2006 (2434) | 6 months ago | G'day thea, that's Aussie talk for hello, and thank you for your information. In Australia, we are taught British English, however, in Thailand, I taught American English, Thei English language neaspapers are in British English, and there are a variety of Foreign companies that use a variation of the two. Now, learning English is difficult enough without giving everything two names, don't you think? I have never heard of a "kinito," thank you for the explaination, and theresponse. Take care.

| | 5. suspenseful (17120) | 6 months ago | I call them cell phones. However I think mobile phones as cell phones with those mini keyboards and that have extensive data connection and are used by business people, while cell phones just have texting, take photos, and are used by ordinary people like you and I. The same with laptop and notebook. I think of laptop that are used in place of a desk top by ordinary people, you and I, whereas I think of notebook computers as laptop computers that are used by business people and are carried around in their suitcase, like what the real estate lady uses. I live in Canada, by the way. I think mobile phone sounds more snobbish then cell phone.

mipen2006 (2434) | 6 months ago | Hollo suspensful, and thank you for your comments. However, the difference is purely just another difference Amarican and British English. Just the same as boot and trunk is for describing the rear storage area of a car/automobile! Our language is one of the most difficult ones to learn, so why do we make it more difficult by having two words for so many things?

suspenseful (17120) | 6 months ago | I find it confusing, because here in Canada when we say mobile we think of those smart phones with the mini keyboards, not the ones with the regular touch phones that may also work as mini keyboards. But with laptops and notebooks, even though I consider laptops as substitute desk tops, I figure that notebook computers do not have that much in them, just the stuff the business person needs. So whereas on a laptop, you might have your photos, games, articles for Helium, dress designs, music, and what ever, on a notebook, if you are a photographer, it would just be things relating to the photography business, if you are a real estate agent, the houses you are going to show, etc. so it would not be as powerful.

mipen2006 (2434) | 6 months ago | hi ikbooi, tou're right, cel is short for cell phone, which in turn is short for cellular phone. As for mobile, well that means portable, because you can take the phone with you. They are the same, but why do wehave two names for the one invention. I taught American English in Thailand, and I think students have enough problems learning the grammar without having to learn two names for things. There are so many differences between the two languages, I think we should standardize names and the way we spell things. Thank you for your input.
