Why is it said that we "fall" in LOVE

A lot of idioms don't make a lot of sense. Maybe it's similar to falling asleep. It's more being engulfed by love than falling into it, of course. Then, nobody ever said idioms would be sensible!

I'm not sure exactly, but here is my take on it. I think it is more the feeling you get when you fall in love. You know the feeling you get when you are falling? Or say, rushing down a huge hill on a roller coaster? The light headed rush of adrenaline. That, is what falling in love feels like.

Most of the people use "I am in love" or "I fell in love" because they think love is just a feel. So they use the Adjectve! But very few people think that Love is not just feeling, it is an action. A verb! So they say "I am loving" "I love"

Though these two seems to have a very little difference, there is a lot of difference. Usually those who think love as just an adjective they become "Devdas" or "unsocial" and tend to suffer a lot and make others suffer a lot.

Love is giving. Giving kindness, passion, compassion, support,joy and making the other person happy no matter what!

It seems too idealistic for most people while in real it is too simple. And the ultimate rule "You get what you give" applies here too. Those who love simply because they love, never expect anything in back, though they relish if love is reciprocated but they don't like to force anything.

Even in VEDAS, it is said that, "True love never hurts either lover or beloved"

So in simple, it depends on how one sees it - Adjective or Verb!

Great question and you certainly have me thinking. I think when most people use the words fell in love they use them because the love that they found was unexpected, it just happened. They just "fell into it". This would be my best guess even if it does sound a bit silly.

I too am intrigued by this question. With some very weak research on my part, I found out how this expression could be link to the "head over heels" phrase that was popular in the 1300's (wisegeek.com). From a pragmatic standpoint, this makes sense. I also feel that the verb "fall" implies a sense of romantic helplessness. When one is falling in love with some one else there is really nothing they can do to combat or deflect those feelings of attraction. You don't get to pick who you fall in love with.:)

i think is called "falling in love" because love, like falling takes us by surprise and we can't predict it...

I always say I was hit by a train of love, since it was at first sight for me and I could do nothing about it.:) It was like I turned, saw my husband, and BOOM! Ran over!

I don't know where those terms come from, quite honestly, but for some of us, we don't FALL in love...we are hit with it!

This is because we fall into a subconscious state from a conscious one. We dont find it necessary to diffrentiate b/w good and bad, pros and cons. This might be the reason that we say that we fell in love instead of saying, love is in me or love come to me.

hi dude! I too respect love. people who fail in their infatuation always tend to utter those sentences. Love is within us all. As a matter of fact, everybody loves their moms. Ans its obvious they are in love with their mom. Cheers1
