But as far as the relationship goes, I would just listen to them tell the story and be there for them.
It does change a person. That is something that you can never get back and it takes time to learn to trust again.
I would make sure to show them everyday how special they are to me and be kind to them. I would make sure that I didn't make them feel threatened by me in anyway. Let them know that I will be there to protect them and nothing else will harm them again.
