This is Australia....,CALLING. |
| |
| When you travel you find sometimes things are different than what you were taught or thought. We in Australia, do have a good laugh at many when they say common names wrong and for a very good reason, Many Australian word are spelt one way and said another. Let me show you... EMU. This is not EEM...MOO (like DAVE Letterman on the US late show) but we say.... EEM..YOU. Now we also have a town called WAGGA-WAGGA..... You may say WAG GA...WAG GA, wrong it's W O G..GA, W O G..GA We eat Pies and Pasties, We all know what a Pie is but how you say Pasties is some thing different. You see we have strip girls in clubs who have Pasties they hang in the Boobs we say, PASS...TEES, how ever if we want the food we eat spelt the same we say, PAA.. STEE. Now the BIG shock of the DAY is one we all love and that is the ... KOALA.That's it..... do not add to it as it is only KOALA.Many put BEAR at the end, well this little fellow is no relation what so ever to them, in fact KOALAs are related to the WOMBAT 's What's a WOMBAT, he is another Cute little fellow we have. Do you have things like this in your Country or Town and you find amusing when Visitors get it wrong?I'm sure you have, tell us all about them post a comment and let us know. HICCUP/ | | | | | |

| | We have some towns..located in two different states. Well one not accustomed to saying the names, would normally say them exactly the same, and end up in the wrong state, as one woman did. One of the names is Nacogdoches, pronounced na-cog-dou-ches. The other is Nachitoches, pronounced na-ka-tish | | | | | | |

| | We have a thing with CASTLE here also, In New South Wales and City is called Newcastle. And here in Victoria we have Castlemaine. Now this is where the fun begins. In Victoria we say CAS..SEL, in NSW they say KARSEL. So very quick you can pick up where they are from. We in Victoria will say, POTATO CAKES but NSW will say SCOLLOPS now this gets funny if they want Fish type they will say Tasmanian SCOLLOPS. Where we will ask for SCOLLOPS. HICCUP/ | | | |

| | The hand held meat pie, as well as the stripper are both common in the US as well. Girls wear pay stees, meat pies are pass tees or paas tees. We talk differently in different regions. The pies are in the upper midwest, brought to the mining country by Welshmen and people from Cornwall, I believe. I cannot think of any right now, but like your Koala, there are many naming falacies and redundancies. Nature of the human, I suppose. | | | | | | |

| | Actually I almost did. My husband used to manage a Golf Club here in North QLD and we had to socialize quite a bit. There was an outing for some of the members of the club and the lady who was a member of the committee invited us and singled me out and asked If I can bring a plate of course if it is only a plate there's no problem at all LOL!I forgot to tell my husband about it until the day of the outing. I told him wait I need to get plates for us as per the organizer's request. I didnt know that it was supposed to be food good thing it was still early to dropby good old KFC to save the day.:)BTW thanks wink! | | | |

| | I do not condemn how people try to speak, I do understand we all travel a different road. "Thank you Mother for the Rabbits" I'm not sure where that came from but it is very old Aussie, I think when we had the Depression in the 40/50s we also had a rabbit plague, and that was good in a way as it fed many who were out of work, and Mothers being good cooks as they are always had a pot of rabbit stew on the stove. And the down and outs for no reason of their own would get a feed at most houses , Yes it was Rabbit stew but better than nothing, So it got to the point where most would say, "Thank your Mother for the Rabbits" referring to the meal and kindness she showed them. | | My country, too, ate lots of wild game during our depression long ago. I remember in the 50's and 60's my dad went out hunting and would bring home rabbits, squirrels, pheasant and occasionally a deer. Mom grew vegetables in the summer and canned them. We ate like kings and I never guessed we were poor, but we were. I like that "thank you Mother for the rabbits". It's the expression of a distinctive time and a kind culture. | | | |

| | Whoa, Buffalo NY is not the midwest..I still think of it as the East and we call it pop and I think they call it pop well into Syracuse. And in Boston they called it tonic. I just feel that when I say Pop and everyone else says soda that I am bi-lingual ( I am grasping at straws here). | | | |

| | I have just learned a lot of new things:) The only one I knew was about the koala, but had no idea about the other ones. Back home we don't speak in English, so it is very normal to have people pronouncing things wrong or differently when they visit from other countries. Of course they are pronounced or called differently in the different parts of the country even though it is such a small country. Which when one thinks about it, is amazing. We are usually able to know what part of the country the person is from just by hearing them talk or by what they call certain things. As I said, what is amazing when faced with such big differences is that Portugal is about 600Km total from North/South and about 250Km East/West! In such a small place the differences are just incredible - from foods, to clothing, to vocabulary etc.- Wish you a great weekend:) | | | | | | |

| | GEE, that is a very little place, To go from Melbourne to Sydney in Australia, is about 1000 Kms and 250 Kms. I will travel 320 Kms to Melbourne and back in a day trip. Well I have learnt something, and the other thing You would not be hard to find over there in such a small place. HA HA HA. HICCUP/ | | | |
