My Buck |
|
I had a large dog that came onto my property night before last. He tried vey hard to get into my rabbit pens, but couldn't. But one of my Bucks went frantic and has injured his hind leg. I've move him to a small pen and trying to keep check, hoping is simply a nail tear or something simple. If I have to "put him down " because of a broken leg it's going to really hurt. I've had him for over a year and he is the father to most of my litters.
Very sad today.

1. jb78000 (1707) | 5 months ago | i think the vet can help if it's broken. i'm not sure because when i had rabbits this never happened but cat and dog legs mend usually - isn't really just very large animals that have to be put down when this happens? if not that is very sad and i hope it doesn't.

Pigglies (5000) | 5 months ago | Yep, the vet should be able to set it. At the animal hospital I worked at they had to fit quite a few rabbits with casts for broken legs. Rabbits are surprisingly tolerant of having casts on too generally. Without a cast it could heal in a bad position.
Usually they wouldn't even need pins put in or anything like that either for a simple break. So I'd definitely recommend xray before just deciding to put the rabbit down.

Pigglies (5000) | 5 months ago | I was gonna say, I'd be very careful giving rabbits human painkillers!
They can tolerate Ibuprofen (Advil) see www.guinealynx.info I think there is dosing information still up on that site, it's for guinea pigs but the rabbit dosage should be the same. Meloxicam (Metacam) which you can get at the vet, is a better pain reliever and works well in rabbits. It can even be tolerated longer term than the Advil can.

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | I'm not sure about giving him anything for pain just yet. I put him in a small pen with a small box, like for a doe with kits, and he is staying inside today. He is still eating so thats encouringing.
Hugs Thank you,

4. Pigglies (5000) | 5 months ago | You should really see a vet and get an xray of the leg to find out how bad it actually is. If it's just a nail tear, I don't imagine he would be exhibiting that much pain. Rabbits can heal from broken legs if the injury is set properly. If left to heal on its own, the injury could heal in a way that the rabbit would no longer be able to walk normally.
This is a prime example of why rabbits are better kept indoors. Even though your rabbit pens are dog proof, the rabbits can still easily become scared. It seems like this would just happen again in a matter of time with the rabbits being kept in the same location.
But for now, you need to worry about that leg and getting to a vet.

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | Yes, if I had only one, for a pet I could easily do that. But I have two bucks, 4 does, (one with a litter) and two does who are due litters in about 2 1/2 weeks at this point.
I sold two of my babies yesterday .
Thank you for caring,
moon

Pigglies (5000) | 5 months ago | I've had more pets than that before and I still take them to the vet. It's important not to take on more animals than you can handle. Vet care is part of pet care. Usually x-rays aren't even all that expensive. For one view out here it's only $65. That's not extreme. Now if it required over a thousand dollars to have the leg set with pins, I think a lot of people would be reconsidering, especially since this is a breeding animal and not a pet.

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | My husband would never allow me to do that, to him a rabbit isn't all that important. He seems comfortable now, but his foot is swollen. Not hih whole leg, which is why I'm hoping it's a torn nail or an ankle bruise. He's very pretty, and the most gentle buck I've ever seen.
thanks, hugs,

ybonjoc (914) | 5 months ago | Oh, it is sad that your husband does not love the buck the way you do.Well, let us hope and pray that bucks have their own way of healing themselves then.I hope we can see that buck, if you have any photo of it.I love rabbits.

6. bodhisatya (525) | 5 months ago | Hi Moon,
Just give the little fellow a little bit of time and see that it regains its strength. You don't have to put it down, I feel so sorry for the little one and I can only imagine how difficult it is going to be for you. I believe it will heal, your love and patience would make it happen.
Take care friend,
Bodhi

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | Hi bodhsi, The only way I would consider letting him go is if he was in too much pain and couldn't recover. I don't like to see animals suffer.
But if he stays in his small "doe litter box" so that he isn't using his foot, he might heal. So far he's doing that, only coming out to eat and drink.
I am not concerned about his future abillities to breed, only that he isn't suffering. I would take care of him the rest of his life. He is a pet, special to me.
Hugs,
moon

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | The owner of the dog dosn't care. He has several large doge and two of his dogs got into my pens last summer and killed three of my does. When I spoke to him about this, he only said, "Well, if they do it again shoot them"..He never said I'm sorry or even offered to replace them. I had driven to another state to pick these does up, so it was a big loss. Two were breed.
People around here just don't think much of animails.
very sad.

8. Shellyann36 (688) | 5 months ago | Sorry to hear about your problem. I hope that you are able to take care of the dog though. I would keep my eye on the buck and I hope that you will not have to put him down. If you do have to kill him will one of the males from a litter replace him adequately? Good luck with it!

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | I actually have another Buck. I just got him back. I had sold him to a boy who lives about a mile from us. I found out the Buck was being mistreated and gave him twice what he bought him for just to get him back home. He was acting pretty wild at first, because of the way he had been treated, but he's calming down alot now and even lets me pet him and will take food from my hand. For him that's a big step. He is also Very pretty. A Calico, which are very hard to find.
Thanks,
moon

moonbutters1 (462) | 5 months ago | Calico does are not as rare, but the Bucks are. I have one Calico doe, and one that is pink. One of the Calico does babies.( The Pink one) She's about 5 months old now. Not bright pink, but a tannish pink, witha pink face. Everyone who sees her says "pink" as I do . Very rare color. Shes a real sweety, LOVES to be petted and would follow me around like a puppy if I let her. I breed my bunnies for color ans am working on this pinkish color.
