how do you react when someone compliment you?

When you get a compliment, it's good to very sincerely and humbly thank them. It's because people make jokes out of compliments, or have alterior motives when giving them, that it is harder to give compliments. Just truly believe it yourself, look them in the eye, and tell them how you feel. A wonderful thing about human interaction is that if you believe it, they will understand that, and if they don't, they may not deserve the compliment.

I always try to accept a compliment graciously, because if someone has gone to the trouble to compliment you, they deserve to be treated with kindness. A simple 'thank you' is enough. As we all try to do our best and look our best, why should we be embarrassed when somebody notices and remarks on it? I would certainly never laugh at someone who complimented me. There may be some people who would say something nice just because they want a favour, but that would be flattery, not a sincere compliment. I would never assume that somebody is only saying something nice because they wanted something in return - that's way too cynical.

Hi ralphbruce, I respond by saying 'thank you' or maybe 'it is kind of you to notice'. This is the land of compliments, sincerely meant, and they are thrown out freely all the time. People are relaxed and take the time to notice things. I cannot understand why people would be embarrrassed to hear something complimentary. It is habit forming and I also give compliments to people, whether on their achievements, dress or something you know they are dying to hear - yes I know one man who miraculously went from grey to jet black overnight and does expect us to now compliment him on his youth! It would be remiss not to do so even if it is not sincerely meant.

well, i think i would react as any normal person does. either i blush or just brush off the compliment. sometimes it's really awkward to react when the compliment is so good that your heart could bursts. it really feels good to be complimented. especially when you feel that the compliment is genuine. i love compliments and i love also giving out compliments. i think that is healthy for both parties especially if it is sincere. by the way, great question you come up there! see? i already gave you a compliment. how did you feel?

I just smile, a smile can be a way of thanks, it can also express a way of asking, "Really?", when complimented. So a smile can be a thanks or doubt.

I don't think anyone could tell you how to react when given a compliment. Just take in what they said and react by that. If it makes you uncomfortable, shy, or happy then react they way you feel. It really depends on what they say and how they go by complimenting you. Sometimes they don't say what they mean and will switch words around and not even know they did so it's good to react how you take it in.

I just smile and say thank you because when I say a negative response or if I joke about it they would think I am fishing for compliments. Most of the time a thank you is enough and the awkwardness somehow goes away. When I compliment someone, I definitely mean it. Compliments are different from flattery anyway.:)

When someone compliment me, i will smile and say thank you. I understand what you are saying. Because many people use the compliements to get things out of people, so people did not trust other people any more. I have a very good example. One of my friend told me that, when he was not yet married, he told his girlfriend that she is very pretty, his girlfriend was very happy and smiling. After 20 years marriage, when he said the same thing to her, she was like" what are you saying this? Are you trying to get something from me?" See, that is the difference.
