Why are women and children evacuated first?  

I don't have a real answer, but maybe it's because the problem that causes an evacuation to be necessary in the first place is usually some MAN's fault!
Even the Titanic, yes, it was an iceberg, but it was a MAN who ignored the danger!

As far as I know, my history teacher commented that this practice started long long time ago. Women are always regarded as important in saving humanity because they are the only who can bear human. Having a female specie amidst thousands of men will ensure that you can create new generation. As for children being evacuated first, it is because they should never be involve in any battles cause by adults. Also, the children are the hope of the nation because they can start change on their own and they have longer life to live compared to adults.

I think it is tradition and the feeling that men are suppose to protect women and children and that is why they are to be delivered to saftey first.

Also its just good manners to let women and children go before you if you are a man and that could be the reasing behind it as well.

I have also heard that sometimes they go by if you have a family you can go first, like if a man or woman were travelling by themselves as a single would have to wait untill all the families are evactued first.

it is very important to evacuate children and women first because of their inability to handle such a difficult situation, in times of such dangers, women and children suffer most hence they should be the first to be evacuated and men can be save thereafter

It is much about protection of our children. All children are ours, so our goal as society is to protect all children. Children need mother first....plus, man supposed to take care of children and woman to make sure that human race will survive...

I read that article of yours over at AC and it was a great one. As far as the women and children first thing...I've seen some of the ideas I thought of already mentioned. In the old days women wore a heck of a lot more clothes than we do now...in an event like the Titanic where it involved the ocean, the weight of the woman's dresses would have made them sink like a stone. Ever see the first Pirates of The Caribbean where Jack Sparrow dives into the ocean after that woman who falls in? She sunk to the bottom of the ocean...when he tried to pull her up she was too heavy due to her clothing...so he..uh, ripped the dressed off..LOL Also it could be the mere fact that both women and children don't have the same muscle tone and strength in general to swim well in an ocean disaster

I'm not sure if you have finished your article or not, I think I read the one you sent by e-mail. As far as I can tell and have read, the women and children go first because children have yet to live their lives and they must be given a chance. That's not to say that a 30 year old male has even started living but children have so much to see and do. The reason women are sent with the children is because they give life, women have the babies that grow into children and then adults. Men are not expendable but a woman can give birth to many babies and then populate who was lost at sea or otherwise. Hope that helps.
