Aah, I have come across so many people who ask this question.
Basically everything sells, and if it does not then it is exchanged for something.
Let me explain, you give your number to a bank, the bank will share it with its partners for money/favours. This can be even the basis of their partnership.
Whenever you give out your number be sure that it will be distributed.
We think out credit card is private, but any bank can always look at your cards, your payment history on that card and everything. Now if one of the employee decides to earn some extra money he can sell that information to interested buyers, who would use it for some purposes.
You have one mobile service provider but the same provider will exchange your number to its competitors for something. Its not just your number, they share the entire or part of their huge subscription database.
So the true answer to your question is "No", your number is not protected against such guys.

I have never had a problem. You need to call your phone service provider and make sure that your number is private and unlisted. I always make sure of this when I set up service. About every six months or so I check all my accounts and make sure everything is set up correctly. You might want to do this. You don't necessarily have to call everyone but just check your statements and be sure everything is set up the way you want them.

Actually this is a very interesting discussions, because I have never bothered at all about this problem, I also get calls like this and I have never given that importance but now I think I need to concentrate more on this problem and get my number protected.

Yes I have had this happen to me many times,when I lived out of state..So What I did was call my phone company at the time and asked for my number to be unlisted. And after i had done that I stopped receiving those prank phone calls. I hope this help.

When you purchase certain items they require phone #'s .Well this is so they can be sold to people like your harasser. If he or anyone else would call you like this again,tell them you will report them for harassment this will stop the calls.
There is also a list you can get on to not get calls such as these .The telephone company can also block certain incoming #'s for you,but this costs you.

First I would like to express my understandings to you. It seems that I'm not the only one to suffer this matter. It's not rare to see here, everytime I travelled throughout this country, I received many scam messages as soon as my train entered another province. Messages like "Welcome to ...Province, we offer services of booking hotels, and blar blar blar...." I hate those messages, I felt that I had no privacy at all, all my information was disposed to others, and the mobile server who declared that they would not let any personal information out was actually the one to betray.
One day, I received a call from the capital, the girl there asked for a woman called He Shujun, but I never heard of this name before, so I told her that she made a wrong call, but several days later, another man called asking for the same person....God, I told him he made a wrong call and told him never call me again, but, I don't know why they are so persistent, they called again and again...I thought that I should have asked them who are they and what company or unit do they belong to...I will if they call me again...(God I wish they'll never call me again)
So I just want to tell you that don't let your cell number known online or somewhere else, be cautious, because there are many cheaters who want to do something bad, so be careful.

Even though the number is supposed to be unavailable, there are any number of sites on the internet which will give out anyone's number, with no restrictions at all. It's hardly worth the extra charge to keep the number unlisted, so I dropped that feature.

Well this is such a coincidence! Just yesterday morning I received a strange phone call from someone I did NOT know!!I thoiught it was protected, but apparantly it's not secure...Lori

First, put your number on the Do Not Call List.
Second, write down a second, non working number, and use that on all your internet places, and profiles, and even in non important public places.
Joining some of the survey sites can net you a lot of phone calls. I forget which ones it is, but i was bombarded with calls, after joining one that my daughter thought was fun.
If you have a stalker, then call the police.

Well, I have my name listed under a name that is not my own, so that unless they know the name its listed under, they can't find me.
