Woman, 28, told to prove age to buy pizza-cutter |
| |
| Got this from here and fark. http://www.telegraph.co.u...> NOT A REFERRAL LINK Jenny Palmer, 28, was asked for her ID at the checkout after she went to the retailer's Derby store to buy the £1.50 item. "I'm only two years off my 30th birthday and hardly look like I'm going to go out and physically harm someone," she said. "I told the checkout woman I was buying it because I was moving into a new house, but she said her screen was telling her to ask for ID. I think she could have used some common sense. I can't believe I had to go through all of that just to buy a pizza-cutter, of all things." M&S insisted its employee was right to demand proof of age from Ms Palmer under the 'Challenge 25' policy. Staff are required to ask for identification from any customer who tries to buy alcohol or a bladed item and appears younger than 25. A spokesman said: "Our policy is not to sell knives or bladed articles to persons under 18, and a pizza-wheel fits into to that category. We are a responsible retailer, and our customers expect us to be vigilant in providing blades if people appear to be underage." Last year Tesco told cashiers not to sell alchol to shoppers of any age if they suspected the drink would be passed on to underage youths. What the hell? This is so damn stupid. And on the last sentence how the hell would they know if someone was going to give booze to underage youths? How can you suspect that? What the hell is wrong with England? | | | | | |

| | Good point, in the UK there is a kid dying nearly every week due to being stabbed, usually in well lit public places, even on busy days so we have a right to be a bit more stressed about anything with a blade. Perhaps the cashier did use her common sense but this lady actually looked young. | | | |

| | Yeah and you wonder why so many people are being hurt by knives when you arnt allowed a weapon even for self defense. Hell there would be less shootings here if everyone went around like they did in the old west. With a handgun strapped to your side. Take away weapons only criminals will have them. Hmmm no bats? What about cricket bats? Cant those be used as a weapon? Or would they not make a good one? Ive only seen them on tv lol. | | | |

| | I can see the funny side to this discussion but our laws are strict because certain types of crime is really out of hand here. Kids alcohol and knives just don't mix. Check this link when you get time http://www.guardian.co.uk... | | | |

| | Hi dj, There are so many things wrong with England, and I can't believe they do that to a woman of that age, I would have gone mad with them too and you are right people still does buy booze for the kids outside waiting or take it home and give it to their kids, sometimes I feel like telling the goverment they are out of touch, they don't live in the real world. | | It is quite disappointing that even such a simple thing becomes so complicated. I think the shop just doesn't want to take responsibility when their merchandise courses problem. They would rather make us inconvenient than think about what is the right solution. How pity it is, I don't think people won't go to that shop as many as before after they hear the news or experience the hasle. They haven't think through the result. I am sure in England, people slip alchol to under 18 and that's the source of some accident. But at the meantime, I want to ask why they need to apply rules to the rest of us? It would be appropriate for them to enact such rules, but who gives them the right? | | | | | | |

| | I'm stuck somewhere between "this is so freaking asinine" and "well at least they're trying to pay some sort of attention to public safety"... Part of me is happy that the store seemingly cares about the community. Or are they just worried about the possibility of being sued? | | | | | | |

| | @Alice They would be liable if it could be shown that they knew the alcohol was intended for minors. Think if it was given to a 17 year old who was driving and crashed killing all his mates. Maybe a manslaughter charge for the shop person in the UK or US for that matter. In the US maybe reckless endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor...they have way more laws than us. | | | |

| | DJ- This is nuts. I can't imagine being "carded" for buying a pizza cutter of all things. I mean, what kind of damage are you going to do with a pizza cutter of all things? Heck, I invested in a very good brand pizza cutter (so was recommended) and the darn thing still doesn't cut the way a professional pizza cutter does! It sounds like the owners need to have some common sense classes. And I understand carding for alcohol, and I don't have a problem showing my ID, but who can really tell who is going to "give it" to a minor or not. I don't think that sort of power should be held in the hands of some shopping store clerk. It's my business what I do with my alcohol. And I'm not one to give it to under age drinkers, but I'd be very offended if some shopping clerk refused to sell me it thinking we were the types. On that note, we actually shop at two very nice stores that know us so we've never had any of those issues. Though, for purposes of MN state law we always have our ID's ready. The last item we bought was a lovely bottle called Luna de Luna. It's very good. Namaste-Anora | | | | | | |

| | Yeah even very good pizza cutters barely cut pizza, I can only imagine trying to cut skin with it lol. Yep you dont know if that person coming in is going to buy for the kids or not, hell they might ask he might say no and was already planning on buying some for himself anyway. | | | |
