Need help resolving a minor problem please:dissension in the house. |

Now the dilemna is I have a lovely spider as a kind of pet, he lives underneath my spiral staircase and does a fantastic job of catching mosquitos and flying ants in his web. He even has a name. Lately he has been joined by a mate, but I have no idea if they are a couple or just good friends. Now I want to move him into my bedroom to carry on his stirling work there but my son refuses to let me move him in case it disturbs him so we have a problem. We don't know whether to just move the new one or will this cause broken hearts possibly. A friend came up with the solution of waiting until they had babies then move them into the bedroom but we don't know if this will ever happen as they may just be good friends, and then there's the dilemna of splitting up a happy family. I could do with a bit of help on this one as said spider would be much more useful in the bedroom with the mossies and we can't find a solution which keeps everyone, including pet spider, happy.

2. thedailyclick (1118) | 5 months ago | I think there should be a new category on myLot called “Relationship Counselling for Spiders”, lol.
I would say you should leave them until they possibly mate and produce baby spiders and then I feel that you would be safe to move one without any long term emotional damage. The reason being is that most spiders can only mate the once so I would say let them get their groove on and then start dispatching them to where you need them.
You could alternatively look for another spider outside to inhabit your bedroom if you feel that you could cause broken spider hearts by separating them.

thea09 (4395) | 5 months ago | I know click, I fuss too much about them but they are so good and don't require any care and earn their keep so well, other people keep trying to fob off one of their kittens to me and can't understand I'm happy with my spiders. Now I'm not sure if they will ever mate as not too adept at identifying their gender. Also I've never seen this variety of spider outside to bring one into the house, they are docile and hardly move, no scampering around for them, with a tiny body and long legs.

3. OreoCookie3 (18490) | 5 months ago | Wow! Aren't you afraid of getting an arachnid in bed with you at night? I've been spider bit before in my bed. I think I would leave the spider be. I don't know if a spider is sentient to actually think about being a happy family. I kind of think this is just a human kind of thing putting emotions onto an insect that has a brain, which mostly consists of 2 clusters of nerve cells. I think that spiders are very smart, for having such a small brain. I know they can reason to a degree, because I have seen spiders put their webs in the most strategic places to catch flying insects. I have on occasion swept down a spider's web when I didn't want the scary thing in the way of me possibly running into it... and the spider would just put it back. When I took a broom and took it down again, the spider moved the web in a better place so that we would have clearance to get off the porch. Then I just let the spider stay, because it wasn't hurting anything.
I do not like arachnids! Anything with 8 legs is very scary to me. I can pick up a granddaddy longlegs though. I will put them outside if I find them in the house. Other spiders in the house will either be swept outside, or stepped on. My daughter will take a broom and sweep them outside when she sees them. She does this, not because she loves spiders, but because she is afraid if she steps on it, it will jump up on her foot at the last second.**shivers**
I know spiders must have a scary life, being afraid of being stepped on, just because we people are scared of them. I just can't help it. I know spiders are good for the earth, and without spiders we would not be able to live here. I'm just scared of them because I have been bitten in my sleep a number of times. One house I lived in they came up the drain into the bathtub. Now that was a scary thing. I went to church one night and when I came back there were like a thousand baby spiderlings in my tub. Out came the RAID!!!!

5. scarlet_woman (8849) | 5 months ago | i would wait for the babies.if it's a type of spider that has a lot, they will most likely spread out themselves in the house.also less chance of transportation injury for the spiders.

thea09 (4395) | 5 months ago | Hi scarlet_woman, we were out this evening and when we got back there was another of the same type of spider in the bathroom. I called my son to check that the other two were safe in their normal place and they were so we tried to capture the new one to move to the bedroom. Before we could tempt it into the dust pan it ran off behind the washing machine. So you're another vote for the babies to move into the bedroom.

7. Druscilla34 (11148) | 5 months ago | Just leave your bedroom window open for a couple nights. I promise you'll have a new visitor within the next 48 hours. That's how they get into my room, my window's always opened a little. I happen to have a pet spider living in here too. I've named him Peter

Druscilla34 (11148) | 5 months ago | Peter won't eat them, I really wish he would. That's because he's too busy eating ME all night. I wake up with spider bites all over my stomach...and I know he's the culprit. I've already had a serious talk with him about it, but I can't get him to respond. That's because he knows he's guilty

thea09 (4395) | 5 months ago | Hi Druscilla, much as I would love to I cannot sleep with the windows open in the bedroom. It's downstairs close to the olive grove and if the windows were open in the night goodness knows what might come in. I recently had a snake inside and no way I'm taking the risk of another one, then there's giant centipedes lurking out there too. The only solution is to close the wooden shutters and leave the windows open but the mossies still come through the air vents on the shutters which is why I want my pet to move in with me.

8. dorisday1971 (2048) | 5 months ago | I am very afraid of spiders. I cannot make them as my pet. My daughter was biten by a spider and I was glad it was not a poisonous one. Since then, I hated spiders.

thea09 (4395) | 5 months ago | Hi dorisday, i am actually with you on my dislike of spiders in general and we have many varieties here including scorpions and something green which bites. I would never give house room to any of them at all but my two pet ones are of a completely differnt kind, docile, sweet, don't move around, totally unscarey, so most welcome to stay and help me out with my mossie problem. When I was younger the sight of a big fat hairy spider would be enough to make me leave the room screaming.

9. Hatley (20776) | 5 months ago | oh hi theaod to me the only good spiders are the dead ones, so yes I would move the spiders then squash them good, no creepy spiders biting me again and sending me to the hospital. the o nly pets I would want would be a doggie or a cat. no spiders at all.Let the spiders do their good work outside where they belong and eat all the insects they want. but not in my house. here we have black widows and brown widows, both bites are horrid.
| |
| |
|
|
thea09 (4395) | 5 months ago | Hi Hatley, we have a large variety of spiders here some of which bite, including scorpions. I wouldn't give house room to any of them except my docile two who aren't scarey, don't scuttle around, but just hover building little webs to catch the insects. I'm with you completely on squashing all the rest as I'm never sure which other types bite.
