1. SnowWhiteAndSeven (228) | 5 months ago | That is bartering, and I think it's a great idea, if people would take you up on it! I would just ask permission from the store owner. I'm not thinking it could interefere with any unemployment as long as you're still seeking a job.

2. ShirleyBillingsley (900) | 5 months ago | You could do that, or simply put up the ad, and accept cash, if they want to pay cash, then you can buy the fruit and vegetables. If you look, in some of the stores, they will have a sale buggy or section. I have gotten bags of fruit and vegetables for just a dollar each. Most times they have a bruise on them, and you can simply cut that off. The fruit and vegetables are always good enough to use, and sometimes they look just like that on the shelf.

catdla1 (2631) | 5 months ago | Alice would have to be very careful if she accepted cash for the ironing. If actual money changes hands, that probably would affect whatever jobseeker allowance she gets. I can easily see people willing to trade fruits and veggies from their gardens (I've always had a surplus from mine) for ironing. Personally I HATE to iron, so it would be a no-brainer for me.

ShirleyBillingsley (900) | 5 months ago | Are you kidding? I barter and trade all the time. It sure does work for me. I have not paid cash for hardly anything in my mobile home. Very few items, have i actually paid cash for. I even did a barter and trade on getting my mobile home moved, and then on the porch to go on the front of it. Heck, i don't see how people make it, by laying out so much cash.

ShirleyBillingsley (900) | 5 months ago | In today's world, i don't think most people will do that anymore, on moving a mobile home, i mean. I think they have to turn in time, and mileage on those trucks when they crank them up to do a job. Most movers will only accept cash to my knowledge. I traded my travel trailer in on the moving, and ... he is letting me keep the travel trailer until we get the mobile home finished. I think he is an excellent person for doing that. We are working on getting the electricity run over to the mobile home now, and i just sold all my chickens and turkeys so that i could afford to get that done. Wish me luck, sure hope we made enough. My sister has sold a lot of her chickens as well, just to help me out.

ShirleyBillingsley (900) | 5 months ago | Not a chance. We sold those chickens, so that i can get my electricity run up to my mobile home. That is going to cost a bundle, and well, most electricians won't barter and trade. Has to be cash.

3. catdla1 (2631) | 5 months ago | Breaking laws?? Welllll...I guess it depends on what you iron . Seriously, What you are suggesting is bartering, and I can't see how that would affect your jobseekers allowance (unless there are specific rules against it). People have been bartering since the dawn of time, it preceeds money. I used to live in a very rural community in Massachusetts where amongst my neighbors was a tree man, an auto mechanic, a chiropractor, a hairdresser and a man that worked for the telephone company. I worked for a fertilizer company at the time. With the bartering we did between us, we all had plenty of firewood, great running cars, extra phonelines in our homes, great hairdos and wonderful gardens. And no backaches for our labors...lol. All was accomplished without money changing hands. If you're trading equal value for equal value, there isn't need for money. So give it a try, and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of your labors.

ShirleyBillingsley (900) | 5 months ago | You are right. There is no money changing hands, therefore, no law to prohibit a barter or trade.

catdla1 (2631) | 5 months ago | With the economy hurting almost everyone's pockets, I'm surprised that more people haven't turned to bartering. Maybe what communites need is to have some one start up bartering clubs, or even bartering gazettes (online). After all, everyone wants things and everyone has a skill or stuff to barter. There's an organization here called freecycle.org, where people post merchandise they will give away, as wellpeople posting for merchandise they need. It has gotten huge with chapters for individual areas all over the country. Some one should start something similar, but also include labor.

6. jb78000 (1673) | 5 months ago | hiya i think some areas have groups where you exchange goods and services - pretty sure yours will but can't remember if it's a big thing like freecycle or just local groups - i think places like healthfood shops might know or just do a search. i've done language swaps a few times and would quite happily do some tutoring in exchange for pet care when i'm on holiday. jb

jb78000 (1673) | 5 months ago | fine now after all the break in stuff and whatnot the last few weeks- how're you? anyway it's only spanish and english with bits (and i mean bits) of some others but i teach tefl so i've often swapped english for a foreign language - although it only works really well with someone else who's a teacher. jb

9. LadyMarissa (2674) | 5 months ago | I don't know the laws in the UK, but bartering is becoming very popular here & a perfectly acceptable practice. The only way it becomes a problem is if the amount exceeds what is considered allowable. Here those on Social Security Disability are allowed to earn $400/month. A record must be kept on what has been traded & the value of that trade. If the $400 is exceeded it causes a problem; if not, it's not counted as income. I'm not familiar with the unemployment compensation laws but I think they are similar. I've known friends on unemployment & they were allowed to work as a day laborer. As long as they didn't have a full time job, their assistance didn't change. You might want to check with your local office & ask them if bartering for food is prohibited. GOOD LUCK!!!
