A cat with a sorry note |
|
A black and white cat in a basket was left outside an animal rescue place. The poor cat had been in a road traffic accident. With her was a note "Sorry, I can't keep my cat anymore. I have lost my job and about to lose my home too. I can't afford the vet bills. My cat was hit by a car. Please keep her". The animal rescue home is so full of animals that came because the owners can't afford to keep them anymore. They got the cat made better by a vet.
What do you think of the pet owners actions?

suspenseful (17027) | 4 months ago | What if the vet took it to the animal shelter or had the cat put to sleep? That would not have been very nice.

2. caragh2608 (1007) | 4 months ago | It's a very sad thing for an owner to have to do, but the fact is, if you can't afford to have pet insurance, you probably shouldn't adopt pets. I didn't have insurance with my first cat, and when he died I was left with a huge bill for the treatment which unfortunately failed to save him. All my cats now have insurance to cover any vets bills, because I love them too much to part with them.

suspenseful (17027) | 4 months ago | She probably had the cat given to her so she might not have bought her. We never bought our dogs and the two cats we got. One of the cats was a kitten that the neighborhood kid wanted us to have (was part of a litter) and the dogs, one was a puppy that we got from a friend and one was from my husband's friend.

3. Valenas (1016) | 4 months ago | I work at a veterinary clinic and we really support the pet shelters. I've taken a tour of the shelter and I really like what they are doing. They have six boxes that are available to people during the night to drop their pet off anonymously in. The boxes lock when an animal is in there and can only be reaccessed from the inside. When the boxes are full, owners are encouraged to come during the day or at the next night to drop their pet off. I was told that the shelter employees would come in and find animals loose in the loading dock if the boxes were full, which is surrounded by an eight-foot-high fence. People were so desperate to get rid of their pet that they dropped him over that fence.
The point that I am trying to make is: there are owners out there who don't care for their pets. They see their pet as a toy and when they get bored of him, they get rid of him. And then there are owners like the woman that you described- people who realize that they, for one reason or another- can no longer provide for their pet the way that they need to- and have to part with them. Rather than let the pet suffer at her house, she tried to seek help. There may have been a better way to handle the situation, but she didn't just let the cat suffer at her house.

4. twoey68 (9610) | 4 months ago | Well, as much as I hate to hear that someone gave up their pet at least they took the time to take it to the shelter rather than just turning it lose on the streets. With the economy getting so bad it is bound to happen. My only question is would this person do the same thing with their kid if it got to costing too much? Pets are much like kids so I'm wondering.

Valenas (1016) | 4 months ago | Hello, twoey68,
I have been thinking about your response for the past thirty minutes, and I think I may be able to answer your question. You asked, "would this person do the same thing with their kid if it got to costing too much?" It may be hard, but sometimes its best to let your child go, even if only temporarily- I think there are even foster programs that will let someone take custody of their child again if they can get back on their feet, and if not, you can still spend time with your child. There are times, even, where other family members will pitch in to help you with the necessities or things that your child might need for school. These family members may not be so willing with a pet. People are generally more willing to help out when it concerns another human being, rather than pet.

twoey68 (9610) | 4 months ago | You might be right. I know I couldn't do it...not with a pet and not with a kid. I would find a way to keep them...as a last resort I'd find a family member to take them but that's just me.

5. Azaerus (301) | 4 months ago | I understand the owner for he or she is only thinking of the cats' life. The owner was about to lose everything he or she owns and the owner probably don' want the cat to suffer too..The owner was only concerned of the cat because the owner probably can't provide anymore for the cats needs like food and shelter.
The owner did the right thing,I know it is hard for the owner to leave his cat like that but in his or her situation that is the only way for the cats life to be saved. Letting go of something that you treated as a family is very hard but we sometimes need to do sacrifices for them to have a good home and in som situation like this for their lives to be saved.
I feel sad for the owner but on the other hand I feel relieved that the cat turned out okay.

6. suspenseful (17027) | 4 months ago | What a horrible choice to make. If it were a kitty, she could have gotten a child to take it door to door and have someone adopt her or she could have advertised on a flyer, but with the cat already injured, I do not know the solution. Could she have left it at the vets? Well maybe the vet would have taken it to the animal rescue place, or may have put the cat to sleep, so the lady was between a rock and a hard place. You cannot blame the lady when a lot of people have already lost their homes and jobs. Do you expect her to keep the cat and go out on the street. I did read some the answers and it seems that they think this lady got the cat when she was already in trouble, when she had already lost her job and her house with in foreclosure. Well maybe those things happened afterwards and it was not because she bought the cat in the first place. Maybe it was given to her. So don't those people who think she was a meanie, blame her.

7. kykidd (4555) | 4 months ago | It is sad when the economy is so bad that people can't afford to keep their pets anymore. I wonder what they would do if they had kids. Do you think that they would take them to an adoption agency and say "Sorry, I can't afford to keep my kids anymore?". Or would they just find a way to feed and nurture them.
Some people say that animals don't have emotions like humans do. But I think that animals have feelings when their masters are gone. I have seen and heard about some dogs that have been depressed because of such a thing. What do you think? I have never looked up, or read any kind of studies on it. But I wonder if they have feelings just like people who are sad when they miss a loved one.

8. mipen2006 (2422) | 4 months ago | Hi max, you've posed a difficult one here, but judging from your post, I would say the owner loved the cat, and was trying to secure its future. However, I wonder how different the situation would have been if the cat hadn't been hit by a car.

lovinangelsinstead21 (336) | 4 months ago | Hi mipen,
Can agree with you here it must have been a really bad ordeal to give up something it is not an easy thing to do. I had to give up my pet budgie and my Parrot because we had to move because the money crisis was already hitting Spain then. I had to leave the budgie in a Pet Shop and she was calling after me and I went away in tears because there was no one to have her or who would take her on. Same for my Parrot I left her in a Zoo in Madrid but this time I did´nt have to go on my own. I still miss that Parrot and the budgie from time to time. But when you live rented they don´t allow animals of anykind and I´m not kidding. So yes she must have gone through an ordeal. Regards.

9. imsilver (1455) | 4 months ago | I find this story really sweet. Around here we have an over abundance of cats. The local shelter has put the word out that they really can't take any more cats until they move into their bigger building. And so we are hearing plenty of stories of cats just abandoned, or litters of kittens just left out to die. It's so saddening. I feel for whoever owned the cat. They obviously loved it and wanted the best for it.

10. tamarafireheart (12453) | 4 months ago | Hi max,
Awwwww, the poor cat, but the only thing I can say for the owner is that, thank God he left outside the rescue home, as they come have just lfet the poor cat on the road side to die. I also think the before anyone can be allowed to keep pets, they should be means teated and check out the families, all too soon these animals are the ones that suffers, its like leaving one of your child on a doorstep.
