Has anyone ever written a book? email this discussion to a friend?

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer5 months ago

I am trying to, because I want to write books. It's such a big project though, and I am just eighteen, going to school to become an English major in two weeks. And I was just wondering if anyone else has ever attempted to or has written a book. And if so what kind of book, and what was it about? How did you go about it?

I never wrote a book, but you never know what the future holds...
I've submitted an article for a science magazine, and it will be published during the following year. The article is on palaeontology (Upper Cretaceous vertebrate fauna).
I also helped (in quite a large proportion) translating a geology book from my native language (Romanian) to English, book that is also in press.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

I would never have guessed that your native language was Romanian and not English, so I'll assume you did an excellent job translating. Do you plan on doing any other writing?

myLot reputation of 95/100. stvasile (5409)   ranked 855 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

I am part of some research projects whose goal is publishing some scientific (geology, palaeontology, stratigraphy) articles, so I will surely write some more during the following 3 years.

I wish you the best of luck with that, and I hope that you will continue to write in the future.

I have a book. The website to it is on my profile. It's dark fantasy. The blurb on the page tells you what it's about.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

Is it fully written? And do you plan on trying to have it published? And thank you. I'll have to check it out.

myLot reputation of 72/100. irishidid (3078)   ranked 97 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

Yes it is a completed novel and it is already available. Let me know when you do check it out and tell me what you think.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

That seems like it would be right up my alley. It looks very interesting. I'm into that genre, and Irish folklore and myths have always captivated me. Good luck with selling your book!

I, like you, am in the process of writing a book. And if it ever gets finished it will have been a long time coming. You are right, it is a huge project to put yourself into.
I started my book with an idea that I had and just started writing (on paper, the old fashioned way). As I've completed each chapter I've then typed them onto the computer, and gone through a first edit. While still working on the story at the same time. My book is more of a book written for a teenager/young adult and it is about love that was lost and then found again many years later.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

I have started several stories, just playing with ideas but always gave up, because I felt I had no substance or plot. I have recently decided to combine the ideas into one big story, and like you, I write by hand. I want to be an editor and am going to school in two weeks to start working on my English degree, so I have always had this problem with editing as I write. And so, I never get anywhere, but your system seems like it work extremely well and I may put it into action. Thank you so very much for sharing it with me. Good luck with your book - hopefully you can finish the project. The description was short, but it captured my interest. Maybe one day I'll see it on the shelves at Borders.:]

Not a book, but I did wrote a story though, for a national contest. (won one of the first 15 places, dunno which XD)
It was a fantasia sort of, and I was very proud of it.
Currently I'm working on a book- and it taking lots of efforts from me, so I'll see how it goes.
I wish you good luck with your book writing, and there shouldn't be any age limit as to when you can write your book or story, so you supposed to be fine.
Happy myLotting!

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

Congratulations on the award for your story. And good luck with your writing. I'm also trying to write a book, and I know it's a lot of hard work. Finding the time is what is the hardest, I think. And I handwrite but have tendonitis in my wrist, so I can't write too much at a time. But I plan on finishing it when I can.

Happy myLotting to you too!

I've just finished writing my first book and now I'm down to the editing which is the hardest part. I've decided not to go to a publisher because they can take up to two years to get it on the shelf and a lot of publishers aren't giving advances to new writers. Then if you do get a contract you might only get 20% per sale.

So I'm starting small and I'm going to sell it via eBay and using a print on demand publisher so there's no upfront costs, I've only got to pay for a copy once I sell one. I'll see about Amazon after that.

There's plenty of good books you can get about self publishing.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

Well, I want to be an editor for a living, so the hardest part for me is to just write it down without editing every little thing with a fine toothed comb constantly. The information about self-publishing will be helpful - if I ever get that far. Thank you for sharing. And good luck with your book.=]

i wrote a novel. it has sociological content because my ba was in sociology. so, i used my degree. i also drew my covers on illustrator. and i did my own editing. i self published on lulu.com. and i also designed my own marketing material.
i just did a little bit at a time, each day, so it doesnt get to overwhelming for me because it is a lot of work and it can get stressful. and if i feel stressed, i just go work out in the gym to de-stress. i wrote the rough draft within a year, then i played with it and edited it for 2 years. then i just went for it and self-published it.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

I'm glad to know that it's quite do-able by anyone who sets their mind to it... How does self-publishing work? Is it easy and are you successful? I hope so... I can't say I'm totally supportive of it, considering I wanna work as an editor for a publishing house, but hey, whatever works, right?

I have not written a book yet, however, I am working on several different books. Just not all at once. What I am doing is deciding what subject that I would like to write a book on, I write a potential outline, then I begin writing articles and/or blog posts based on the outline. When I get done with the outline, I will have a large amount of the book completed. At the same time, I am earning money off of the articles and blog posts. Hopefully, this give you some thoughts for your own endeavors.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

Well, that's a good strategy too. Getting paid for your rough drafts is a pretty smart move. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your book, blogging and articles!

Actually I dreamed also to publish a book, right now I am preparing my manuscripts and looking for a publication to submit my queries. My topic is all about European monarchy with emphasis on British monarchy. It is a very tiring process and took me 12 years to do an extensive research about their amusing lives. It was physically draining but somehow gave me enough satisfaction because that's my ultimate dream to have my works publish.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

That's a commendable amount of effort, and after so much dedication, I am sure you deserve to be published. You picked a difficult topic to cover, but I'm guessing it truly interested you or you wouldn't have put that much work into researching it and writing about it. I wish you the best of luck with getting your work published and encourage you to keep writing.

I've tried to write a few different books (love stories and biographies), none to which I have finished or intend to finish. I've tried to write children's books about disabled children, but due to having a miscarriage during that time I lost interest. But the most recent was my bridal guide book. I intend to finish that, but have put it on hold because I started the process while planning my own wedding that didn't take place. However, I'm now healed from that disaster and would love to finish my book. I've been in some great weddings and have helped plan some great weddings and they will be my inspiration for finishing the book.

When I decided I wanted to write a book I searched publishers in my area. I found Dorrance in Columbus. This is the company I intend to use when my book is complete. Pay attention when searching for a publisher, some will charge you up front. The beauty though, all of the publishing sites I did come across have no problem with letting you know the criteria and stipulations for submitting work them. Let me know how your search goes and who you decide to go with.
I hope I was atleast somewhat helpful.

raineyes (77)   ranked 179 out of 1,497 in writer  5 months ago

I do understand those sentiments about starting a book and not finishing it, or any project really, when you lose interest or it becomes too daunting. I'm glad you plan on finishing your wedding planning book and I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for the information about the publishers.
