Windows XP and mini laptops....... |
| |
| does anyone know how long microsoft will support windows XP? i've heard that they have quit supporting it since they came out with vista and are getting ready to release windows 7. seems to me like they would support XP since it is coming out on all of these new 'baby'/mini laptops now. i'm curious if anyone knows anything about this or microsofts plans on supporting/not supporting XP as i am seriously considering getting an HP mini and dont want to have problems with it 'down the road' and have microsoft tell me 'sorry, its your problem, we dont support it anymore'. also too, i know that XP does not require as much memory as vista does but am wondering if the mini's are upgradable to 2 gig of memory. (i have the need for speed especially since seeing that full size laptops are coming out now with 4 gig of memory! yowza! talk about flying through things with that much memory!!!! | | | | | |

| | After a few years ,Windows 7 will be popular with all of us . Yeah,I heard this new before .Maybe you need to wait some time . I also hear the news that mini notebooks will support windows 7 . It is best for you to get a mini notebook with windows 7 systerm .In that case ,you don't need to consider upgrade or something esle . | | | | | | |

| | I've been looking at sub-notebooks myself and as far as I know, MS are planning to continue to support XP (or a version of XP) on them. As far as RAM is concerned, it depends on the model, but as far as the ones that I have looked at, ASUS and MSI Wind, is concerned, they will take up to 2 Gig of RAM memory and I think that this is probably typical for most of the sub - notebooks on the market. If you are concerned about "problems down the road", you might also want to consider a machine running Linux. This will give you an interface similar to Windows and you can also run some Windows programs. You'd have to look at it in detail to see what you can and can't do with Linux. The advantages are that it uses far less hard disk space than any Windows OS and it is also not affected by malware as most (all?) of the malware is written for Windows. Hope this is helpfull. | | | | | | |

| | Oh, I forgot to mention another advantage of Linux, although there are some versions that cost money, you can generally get a Linux OS for free and the versions that do cost money are a lot less than any Microsoft product. | | | |

| | the HP's come with 1 gig of ram and are upgradable to 2 gig. i like that upgradable part of things. linux, how hard is that to learn how to use? i've always been a windows person myself and find that i get frustrated while trying to figure out how things work and just give up and walk away from it. | | | |

| | i do not see how they can sell mini laptops with an os that will not or is not supported by MS. all i want a mini for is email only. i have a desktop pc that is loaded with all the programs i need and a few i dont but i keep them just the same. the only thing i want on a mini is email, anti-virus, firwall, thats it. now, another thing too is, i spoke with an agent for HP who told me that windows 7 ran slow and to stick with XP for as long as i could. she said that they (HP) are testing it and she was not impressed with it at all. | | | |

| | well as far as i can see there is no reason for you to panic. windows xp is a very stable OS and so if microsoft is not getting in the support then there is not problematic about it. i have been using windows xp and never needed support. also i have never installed updates. its just the service pack that i keep track off. if there is any, i download that and install and thats more than enough for me. so all in all i think you can use it without any problem. | | | | | | |

| | oh, i have xp on my desktop and like you, i've never had to call for support. its an excellent os. i just felt uneasy about buying a mini and in a year or so MS drop their support of it. oh well, the track record with xp has been great so i'm not going to worry about it. thanks for the response! | | | |

| | im sure xp will still be around at least till until windows 7 really takes off (which will probably be atleast a year from now) but i think your best bet is to try to plan for the future and get vista or wait for windows 7 if you are planning on getting anything with xp. | | | | | | |

| | ewww, i'd rather eat glass than get something with vista on it. i can not express my hatred of vista enough. i had a laptop that had it on it and i couldnt find anything without searching, like the defrag, scandisk, etc. sooo totally different. i'll take xp anyday over vista and cant wait to see how well 7 does, how long it takes to get the bugs out of it, etc. i've heard too that 7 will resemble vista in many ways. i cringe at that thought but i guess i could adapt if need be. | | | |

| | yeah, i like XP better then vista in alot of aspects, but i guess thats where change comes into play. once you get used to vista it is actually really easy to navigate and i guess windows 7 is basically an easier to use version of vista with a few upgrades in performance from my understanding. either way, i would rather plan on something being fully useable 5-10 years from now instead of getting that lovely message saying "your system does not meet our minimum operating standards. XP was a good system but things change and it will only go so far now that things are getting more technical requiring a better OS that can handle the work load. i guess sometimes initial ease of use shouldnt be a determining factor though. with a little time, you will know the system inside and out and wont have any problem. | | | |

| | i had heard they were extending it at least another year since so many people were upset with vista..i guess it depends on how well 7 does. those brand new netbooks are coming preloaded with it,so i would hope they keep their word on that. | | | | | | |

| | they should have given people who bought vista or vista machines their money back!!! so far, none of the new mini's are coming out with 7 installed on them yet. there was no mention of 7 when i bought this HP mini yesterday, just xp which i love. the mini's cant handle vista thus the reason for xp. if the brand new mini's that come out have 7 on them, 7 must be a much leaner os than vista and run along the same lines as xp i would think. i dont know, i could be wrong on that. in my opinion, i think that they should have only xp on the mini's, keep xp alive, well, kickin' and supported by ms. its the best os they have ever come out with and believe me, i've had them all starting with windows 95 all the way up to the short time i had a vista laptop that i sold. everyone says that vista and ME were the 2 worst os's they ever had. hmmm, i kind of liked ME once i learned how to use it with all of its little pains in the butt things you had to do to keep it running! LOL! i'm definately an xp lover though. oh wait, i re-read your msg again, you were talking about the new mini's/notebooks coming loaded with xp, right? (duh, where is my mind at today???) LOL | | | |

| | as regards windows xp it would be supported till the 2014 afterthat microsoft will quit the support center for this os and so they will concentrate only on the latest one!! So if you buy a mini computer with windows xp you can count that this os will be alive for some years too!! As regards laptnet you can upload your memory but it depends..such as you can update ram memory till 2 gb but it depends if the new mini computer will support the upload or not!! Personally i think that if i should buy a mini computer like that i will prefer ubuntu os or other linux distribution that windows one...because they are much more smart especially if you consider the low configurations usually this lapnet are sold!!May be you can look for some dell mini tthey are really thin and you cna buy one of these and having linux os pre-configured on your mini-pc as well!! | | | | | | |

| | thank you for your response and input! i'll print your response and hold onto it for future use. in the meantime, i did buy the HP mini and i loved it. i did have a major problem with the connection speed. at first it connected at 18mbps then over the course of 3 days, dropped down to 2.0 mbps. i gave HP and linksys remote access to it to check the settings and such and all checked out fine. for having only aol, an antivirus, firewall, etc. things pertaining to internet access only and deleting the 'bloatware' and having 1 gig of ram in it, it should have moved FAST and connected at a much higher connect speed. it didnt. i returned it back to office depot who refuses to return my money, instead telling me to either swap out the laptop with another or take a merchandise card for $454.75. that infuriates me! they are pretty much HOLDING MY MONEY HOSTAGE making me spend it at their stores which maybe i dont want to do if i find a better price somewhere else. i didnt want to swap it out and take a chance on getting another defective laptop that i couldn't use due to connectivity issues. this whole experience has been a nightmare with office depot to say the least. maybe in the future i'll get another one but i'll sure read your response before i do! thanks! | | | |

| | Hey, I think that they will stop supporting Windows XP for mini laptops after Windows 7 is officially released. Because Windows 7 isn't as slow as Vista so it will work well with small laptops. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!! | | | | | | |
