We have famous olives. Is your region famous for anything?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life 3 years ago

Kalamata eating olives are produced in this area, along with extra virgin olve oil which is produced from local olives. Both are rightly famous as glorious in taste. The olive trees are a constant part of the landscape and once November comes the first of the olive nets are laid under the tres and the three legged ladders emerge. Do you have anything that your region is famous for, a food, something it produces or anything?

My town isn't exactly FAMOUS.... But we make wine and have like... the best casino and hotel/resort thing outside of Vegas or something. Haha.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi kaykaygee, I'm trying to work out if there is a clue in your answer as to what your town is and what kind of wine it produces. Obviously it must be hot there. Casino and hotel resort conjures up coastline so it must be somewhere hot by the sea - care to enlighten us as to the identity of the town?

kaykaygee (69)   ranked 4,687 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

I'll give you a hint! It's in So-Cal. Hahaha.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Well that could be South Carolina or Southern Califonia! I'll go with the second because of the wine and South Carolina always sounds way too genteel for casinos.

My State is known for their Dairy, Cranberries, Cheese, Sausage, & Beer that I can think of.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi sunggle bunnies, CRANBERRIES. We love them, I never thought about where they came from, all I know is we can't get them here and the price of cranberry juice is astronmical as imported. I would say with the cheese, sausage and beer bit it is somewhere which has a Germanic influence, could I be right?

myLot reputation of 99/100. 3SnuggleBunnies (8037)   ranked 118 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

You are right the majority of the original settling population in the area is of German decent. They even advertised our state in Germany in the 1800's because of our similar climate to Germany despite being in the US.

http://www.cranfest.com/i...

My inlaws have gone to this festival. They are expensive here too, probably cause Ocean Spray has such a huge mark up on them.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi snuggle bunnies, I'm glad I guessed right about the German influence. I never heard of such a thing as a cranberry festival before, the whole thing sounds huge, three miles of booths. And that link made me wonder what Amish noodles are. I'm thinking you must be in Pensylvania, is that right? I didn't check back on your profile to see if it is on there, just trying to make an educated guess.

So are cranberries seasonal like our olives? Last year a friend from England brought my son out several packets of dried cranberries as he loves them so much, but they only lasted a couple of days. Right now the only way I can get them for him are in a cranberry muesli bar.happy

i live in Herefordshire and the soil in certain areas is perfect for growing apple trees. there are a lot of cider orchards in the area therefore cider is plentiful.

almost every farm, big and small, sells it's own cider plus we have several major cider producers, one exports all over the world and it's most famous drink is Strongbow.

i don't drink cider because it gives me a headache but i like the taste of it.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi Rob, I've heard of strongbow.thumbupI never really thought of a whole cider producing regiion but of course there must be. Does it take a special variety of apple to produce cider or just any old kind? I bet it smells nice when you bike past those farms. I sometimes used to buy cider to add to pork casseroles but don't remember liking it as an actual drink, but then again its years since I actually came across it. Never seen it on the shelves out here, I'll have a look.

myLot reputation of 72/100. RobertSixtySeven (151)  3 years ago

they use a particular type of apple for each different cider. they also make perry which is commonly known as pear cider.

they're both nice drinks. i love the smell of cider being made. we're usually allowed to walk on to a farm and ask for a taste of their produce. there are usually about 100 different ciders and wines available to buy and it's good to taste some of them...but it's a bad idea to drive after lol.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi Rob, that's interesting as I've never actually heard of pear cider but it has a nicer ring to it than apple cider. It sounds just like wandering through the vineyards and ending up at the chateau for a bit of tasting. It must smell wonderful though but I think you give very good advice to leave the car at home, what about the bike though?lol

myLot reputation of 72/100. RobertSixtySeven (151)  3 years ago

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

You should try feeding her cider then. All the local donkeys like a shot of ouzo at night.

myLot reputation of 72/100. RobertSixtySeven (151)  3 years ago

i love ouzo, have you heard of zivanea? the old men in Cyprus drink it a lot while they're playing backgammon. i'm not sure if you have it in Greece but if i fed my filly zivanea she might fall asleep on me :D

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

We don't have that over here I'm afraid. Maybe you should try the filly out with tsipero if there is a problem with her sleeping habits, it's deathly stuff most definitely not to be confused with ouzo even though in looks it appears to be the same.

Hi, friend. Your region is famous for olives!! Who knows the olive oil we get here may be the one imported from your region.thumbup

I am not an inhabitant of a very big city. But, it has got some quality works it is famous for. My city is famous for the international quality locks it produces and for the great Aligarh Muslim University (where i study).
The locks from aligarh are exported internationally and are famous as the unbreakables. Also, the Aligarh Muslim University is a big University with a beautiful scenery and a quality education. The University is famous world wide for its culture of politeness and for the Asia`s biggest library it has.

Happy Mylotting!!happy

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi friend, now that's really interesting as one never really gives thought to something like where do locks come from. We just have them fixed on things and really never give a thought to where they originate and you've suprised me. I have to admit to not having heard of your university but it sounds prestigious if it has the biggest Asian library. And what a lovely thing to be famous for as well, culture of politeness, it's not a phrase one often hears but has a delightful ring to it. You always manage to come up with something original.
As for the oil, I have my own small olive grove with trees which produce olives for oil, but none of the eating variety I'm afraid.

myLot reputation of 97/100. THEcreationist (514)   ranked 1,871 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Thanks for your appreciation.
Maybe, our university is not one of the top ones, but its culture is really great. Whenever there is a conference or something like that in our University, the guests do not forget to mention in their speeches that they really loved the etiquette and politeness they saw here. Most people refer to this organization as a synonym of 'Tehzeeb', an urdu word for etiquette.

Thanks for your comments. Happy Mylotting!!happy

Hello again, I see if we keep communicating I'm going to be picking up quite a few words in urdu.thumbup Sorry not to have heard of your university before, as you will be well aware the Western press focuses on Western things so there are many gems about your culture that you'll need to introduce us to on here.

myLot reputation of 97/100. THEcreationist (514)   ranked 1,871 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Yeah, sure. I simply love to communicate, especially to those who are willing to learn, teach and share new information and ideas.
But, i am afraid i cann`t help you a lot in Urdu as i am also not very good in Urdu or Arabic coz our mother-tongue is Hindi and i have been raised up mainly in the Hindi+English environment.
But, i will try my best to share whatever i know.

Well, its not a big deal you didn`t hear about the University. It`s natural that the wester press focuses on western and eastern press on eastern things. I also know just too little about the western educational institutions, just some major western universities.

You are really lucky. I like olive very much. I heard it’s very healthy food. I usually buy olive salad at local supermarket.
I’m not sure what’s the famous in the UK. I just heard British people are very proud of their beef. It seems steak is their favourite meal plus roast beef.
Happy myloting

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi sblossom, indeed we are lucky with our olives as the oil is extremely healthy and so pure that you could just actually drink it. I know it is expensive in other countries but here all it costs is the tax to the olive mill which presses them.
Roast beef is very popular in England but I believe the number one food eaten there is actually curry.

I love olives.. I like the green ones and the black ones. I'm not sure what brand I get.. I don't think I have ever seen that name Kalamata on the olives in our store. It's probably there, and I just haven't noticed. I live in GA and we are famous for our peaches.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi OreoCookies, famous for peaches sounds good but I'm trying to place GA but the initials just aren't doing it. I haven't seen any peach trees in this area but there have been fresh peaches last month which were on the markets so there must be some, maybe further north.
Kalamata eating olives are black. I never need to buy any as someone always has a glut of them and will prepare them and then gift them. I was given a huge jar recently by a local fisherman and he'd prepared them himself with a vinegar twist and they were about the best I've tasted. Anyway if you do see them in a store I can personally recommend them.thumbup

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22470)  3 years ago

GA is Georgia in the USA. Sorry about that.happy Oh lucky you to get fresh olives like that. I love them so much. I get the pitted ones, and I will put them on the ends of my 10 fingers and eat them off my fingers..lol I saw it done like that on the old sit-com "All in the Family" years and years ago... and I've done it ever since.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

WEll if I ate my olives like that round here I'd get some pretty srange looks, don't think I'll be trying that one in public any time soon. When there's been a really good harvest which is once every two years, the other one is a less generous year, the popular way to serve them is with rigani (oregano) on top and in a plate of oil. I love the oil and the olives but have to scrape the rigani off as I hate it, they put it on everything here.

I live in New Hampshire, a state in the north east corner of the United States, among the 6 states known here as "new england". New hampshire is noted for it's maple syrup, maple trees are every where, can't turn and spit with out hitting one. We are also noted for timber production, we have a constantly regenerating forest region and produce soem great pine lumber.
We are also known for our ski resorts and mountain ranges, tourism is probably the primary industry in the norhtern half mof my state. Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and other summer and fall activites are something people travel great distances to do here. We are known for our moose population, they are every where. We are also very well known for our fall foliage, colors up here are unmatched nearly anywhere in the world due to the unique climate, mix of tree species and vast expanses of forests.

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 3 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Hi xfahctor, I love your reply, it brings up all sorts of differnt images. Walking amidst the falling leaves then bumping into a moose. I'm actually trying to picture a moose now with little success, are they dangerous to run into or any special tips they give the hikers on how to deal with them.

Now I did think that maple syrup was a Canadian thing and never actually connected it with America, they certainly have the bigger reputation for it.
You do make a wonderful picture of the area though, I'm ready to book my ticket for the 'fall'.

myLot reputation of 83/100. xfahctor (7623)   ranked 2,592 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

durring certain times of the year, moose can sometimes be considered the most dangerous animal in the country, they can be very agressive durring rutting and when protecting young, especialy the larger males which can weigh up and over 1500 lbs. More often than not, they are fairly shy and will wander off when they catch sight or smell of humans, other times, they just seem Also, they are a very big hazzard on our roads, hitting one of these things on the highway has totaled quite a few cars and killed quite a few people.
They are pretty tastey though, lol.

Great pictures, of course I remember what a moose looks like now but I've never had the pleasure of encountering one. I was ready with a witty comment for your moose picture but Mylot wouldn't let me put one as you aren't my friend, we haven't even been introducedhappy

Unfortunatley the other picture you provide is a regular sight here on our mountain road, the only road which runs between here and town. Today I saw yet another car like the one in your picture, there is a new one each time I go up. They aren't caused by moose though but by lunatic drivers in the main, and tourists who haven't worked out which side of the road to drive on.thumbdown

Hello Hatley, well I've never heard of frozen chocolate bananas on a stick so wonder how famous they actually are. Do they have a wide export market or is it a local thing? Lobster and crab are my favourites but we only get the former here, only had one actual crab from the sea, otherwise it's all frozen crab which no one eats so it mustn't be local. We only do local round here you know. Trees are something good to be famous for.happy
