Learning English | | I'm a native speaker, but I noted some anomolies in English language courses.
Do any of you teach or use these courses? Eg: Cambridge, Headway, IFES?
I used to sell learning English courses and I noted that they told people that 'sorry' means both 'excuse me' and an apology. But if you want soemone's attention, you don't say 'sorry', you'd say 'excuse me'. This really irritated me as a bookseller and it's not right. There were other awkward and erroneous phrases I noted from foreign visitors that I found out were coming from English courses.
There's also the factor of sounding natural. Language changes rapidly and it is colloquially and locally spoken. People who have mastered English at a high level can sound stilted and formal, using all our complex rules perfectly but not souding right. And we hate it when a non native speaker corrects us on our own language, which we are part of forming!
Anyone any thoughts?

When you're teaching a second language you have to be aware of the problems your students have with pronunciation, and grammar isues. Teaching Thais to pronounce a simple word like "APPLE' can be difficult, as their language doesn't hane a final L sound, it is changed to N, so apple becomes appen. Texts books are usually for world distribution, so they don't make allowances for local issues. You're right about colloguialism, and the fact English changes rapidly, usually to coinside with what is used on the street. Otherwise, we'd still be using, thou, thee, and be, in place of is and are, etc. Incidently in Thailand, I'm Miken.
