Age gaps and what it is like to have a new baby

It doesn't really matter how big the age gap is. It is a personality thing. If the child enjoys having the center stage then that child will have feelings of jealousy towards newcomers who take up their position. The best thing to do is make sure there is some quality time with each of the other people in the house and that the crying and tantrums are ignored. Yes I said ignore them. They are a way of getting the wanted attention whether good or bad. Do not feed into them but do make a big deal if he does something nice like kiss the baby, or bring you a diaper. Making them helpers works wonders for their need to feel needed. This can work on husbands sometimes too because sometimes they miss their attention when baby moves into especially at night.....

Hi there! Actually I have only a 4 years old daughter. But she often times tell me that she wanted to have a baby brother or sister. But I think in Gods time it will come but not right now. Because we are not financially ready to have another baby.

Maybe your daughter is kind of jealous and she wants attention from you. But I do hope she will adjust real soon.

Well I guess your oldest son probably didn't really see himself as "the baby" of the family anymore by the time you had the second one, anyway, but I suppose maybe youre 2 year old still did...

Younger kids sometimes feel threatened by the newborn, they fear that mom's love won't be enough for all, they fear that the newborn will take their place in mom's affection, and they are just anxious about the whole thing. This can happen with any child but often to the one that has been having the most attention.It doesn't normally take long until they adapt.
Not all children react the same way. Some seem not to care about the newborn, some pretend to be nice and then try to do some mischief when nobody is watching, and some just are naturally curious about the new baby and accept him/her without a problem.
I was lucky in the sense that my daughter had no problem accepting her little brother from day one. She was curious and a bit apprehensive the first time she saw him at the hospital, but we let her watch the video from when she was born and she could see that the reactions in all of us - and the family that was there visiting -, were basically the same.The big excitement over the new baby was exactly the same thing that had happened when she was born and she was watching that in the video. This helped her not feeling threatened or thinking that the brother was having more attention than her.I let her lay down on my bed beside me while the baby was sleeping while we were still at the hospital, allowed her to hold the baby with me and even participate in his first bath at the hospital by passing me the cloth and helping me to check if the water temperature was fine.
She actually felt important and became her brother's guardian.
However, I could have done exactly the same thing with another child and have a completely different reaction.All children react differently.
The gap between my kids is exactly 3 years and 2 days.

My son is an only child so I cant really relate to that. I guess that there are some kids who relate well to having brothers and sisters and others that miss having undivided attention. I wish for my son's sake that I would have had other children I think he would have really benefitted from having brothers and sisters.

You are very lucky because you can have many children if you like,but we can only have one child in my country because of the population.
I haven't have a child,but I think one is so lonely.

no kids so I have no ideal what your going through.

My own two are 3 years apart. My oldest didn't adjust too well, at first. I don't know if his autism had anything to do with it, but he tried to revert to being a baby. He'd even sit in the little baby swing that was meant for his little brother (I have a picture of it somewhere LOL). Can you imagine a 3 year old child in a baby swing? He was huge in it! LOL Fortunately, that wore off in time.

Maybe it is easier for older siblings to adjust to a new baby than it is for those that are younger. At least it appears to be that way, by what I've seen.

My grandson has a cousin two years younger. A couple years ago, he had the same problem, envying grandpa and grandma caring about the little baby. But now he is fond of her, calling her his little sister, sharing his toys, and enjoying playing with her. For an only child, it is lucky for him to have a cousin.

His parents finds all opportunities to bring them together and encourage him to be a good brother.

well, my age gap to my older sister is 4 yrs and the age up of my younger sister and i are 13 yrs.. its really good.. co'z we got along with each other
