Do you think auto insurance should be mandatory?  

I agree with you- auto insurance should be optional, not mandatory. Not all people can afford the sometimes costly insurance, and they aren't involved in any accidents at all so they do fine without insurance.

Yes i do, my car was hit by an uninsured driver and if i wanted my car fixed i had to use my own insurance. Why should i have to pay for damage that someone else has caused because firstly they cant drive properly and secondly that they are too lazy to pay for insurance? Insurance not only covers yourself but others around you too. What if you hit someone and severley damaged their car and cost them thousands of pounds in medical bills .. would it jsut be their problem?

Insurance is mandatory here in the UK and if you are caught without it you will recieve a fine and 6 penalty points on your driving license if not more.

Not only should it be mandatory the limits should be raised! I was recently (Last October) rear ended by a drunk female driver who was also on drugs, I had my seat belt on and suffered 6 compressed vertebrae, and a torn rotator cuff! She had the $50,000 min. required insurance. My back injuries the testing alone are almost $50,000 the surgery for my shoulder is $65,000 I'm still waiting to find out who is paying for this! It'll be one year in October and the surgeon says if I don't get it repaired soon I will lose the use of my arm! I can't work and this has financially ruined us! You don't believe in insurance! You need to come out of your cave every now and then for a reality check! tdemex

I think that it should be mandatory.

I think if you expect to not owe money ,you are forced to pay the price.If you don't have insurance and hurt someone .They may sue you,this will come out of your pocket.No matter if they tack it to your wages or not ,the person will get something from you if not all.You cannot get blood from a stone. Paying it stinks until you have a accident,then its like a gift in three fold.But in the end its just like getting a chunk of your money back for years of paying accident free or none.
I think it a catch 22 no matter how you look at it.

What do you mean "the other person will get their money either way"?

If neither of you are insured, and neither of you have money, exactly who is going to receive money for anything?

Tdemex (I hope I spelled it right) has a prime example above; if neither of them had been insured, he would be in even worse shape than he is.

I don't think you should be required to have it, but I do belieive you should have to pay for damage you do. But for anyone in my situation which is no job and haven't been in an accident in years, you should have a choice. Just know that if you wreck someone's car or truck, you have to be able to get cash out of one of your bank account.

Why will "the other person get their money either way"? Where is it going to come from? Cause if you don't have to have insurance then they don't have to have insurance either.
I do think that auto insurance should be mandatory. You don't have to carry comprehensive if you don't want, that is a personnal choice. But you better be covered for damage you cause to other people property.

I agree that you should have auto insurance. and here in the state of Tennessee where i live it is mandatory to have it.

Hello, I think auto insurance should be mandatory. Last year my b/f and I were hit and it totaled the car.The guys insurance covered the medical my b/f had to have from the injuries he received. I got lucky I didn't get injured.The payment he received was the cars bluebook value and the medical care.If they guy didnt have insurance who knows how it would have turned out. It is required in my state.
