The "morning after pill " morally wrong? |
| |
| What do you think of the morning after pill? A Friend recently called me with a dilemma, the condom broke and she wanted to get the morning after pill. So she called her doctor who refused to give her a prescription since he does not believe in "that" . She called another doctor and was refused also. Then she went to the Pharmacy and asked how much the Pill is,55.00 Dollars. the Lady at the pharmacy gave her a raised eyebrow and disapproving look. When my Friend called me she was all confused asking me if she was doing anything wrong, is this considered an abortion? We are both Pro Life and the thought of the morning after pill has never came up before. we are talking about 10-12 hours after the condom mishap. Your thoughts on this please. | | | | | |

| | I don't think it's morally wrong, but I will tell you what I feel the other people who refused to help her were thinking. They probably felt that she and her partner were careless, and are probably scared of having a child, so they refuse to help because THEY feel it's wrong. I don't think it's exactly abortion, but I do know that after three days of not taking that morning after pill, she may become pregnant. Tell her to perhaps look into going to the hospital, in hospitals they have small clinics. I'm sure there is a womens health center in there that can help her. I think the doctors and pharmacy were wrong not to help her. I hope things get taken care of soon. I wish her the best of luck. | | | | | | |

| | I don't think that it is morally wrong either. For a start, conception might not take place for hours - if it happens at all. I do hate it when other people make decisions about somebody else's health purely based on their own point of view. Perhaps they should then be liable for child maintenance for any child that might result from their decision! | | | |

| | I think that they should not be given the right to deny her the pill, ultimately it is her body and her choice it is good if she chooses to terminate the pregnancy if she is not ready there is no use having a child if you cannot support it as they will all be miserable and if you give the child up for adoption you will forever feel guilty, the child will look for you and hate you, and you will feel more guilty. TAKE the pill if you are not serious about this relationship with this guy and do not want to have children yet. There is no harm in taking the pill. And those doctors should be on probation or re-examined as medical professions | | | |

| | No, absolutely not. If it was then condoms would be too. I am a bit surprised that you need a prescription for the pill. In India it an "Over the Counter" category medication. Her Doctor has erred. He can not let his belief override a legitimate requirement. Some punitive action or a representation is required to stop this attitude in its tracks. It's okay for the Doctor to practice his concept of morals and maybe even to preach them. But in this case he has no right morally or maybe legally to refuse. It's certainly not his call to make way for an unwanted disaster in a couple's life. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you for all your input, perhaps I should have added that she did purchase the pill that same morning. My Friend already has children and they are still small. You do NOT need a prescription for that pill, she was trying to save money, since they are having to live on a tight budget. What gets me is the fact that this doctor offered her birth control pills after her last child, she does not want to take them because of side effects. Yet he refused the morning after pill. The whole thing scared her and her Husband enough that he decided to get a vasectomy done. | | | |

| | Vasectomy is perhaps the wisest decisions he has ever made. I mean bedding a mate should not be a source of worry! | | | |

| | I agree. I thought it was against the law to refuse the prescription of medication to someone due to personal bias... it certainly should be! | | | |

| | What I think is morally wrong is people refusing to help someone. You know what else would be morally wrong? Bringing a child into the world when the potential mother isn't at a point in her life where she feels comfortable becoming a mother. Nobody wins in that situation. Now, I'm not talking about people who make the decision to keep the child and change their life, here. It seems like so many people always seem to think the worst of a woman when she decides to take an action like this. It's like people don't ever think about how hard it is living with that fear and doubt, then getting scrutinized by everyone they have to come in contact with during the process of obtaining that pill. Good for your friend for doing what she felt was best, I always respect people like that. | | | | | | |

| | I personally do not approve of the Morning After Pill as to me it is very much the same as having an abortion. It is however a personal preference, but as with any medication/pill I would strongly urge you to check and find out what possible side effects or future problems could occur. | | | | | | |

| | C'mon, that's a stretch. 10-12 hours after intercourse, nothing exists. I think it's the responsible thing to do rather than sitting around waiting till it's too late. | | | |

| | Regardless of whether other people (such as the doctors in this case) think, if they feel its morally wrong and you don't.. they can't refuse you the service. Everyone's gonna have a different opinion on this so it's useless to argue who's right or wrong. But, if the morning after pill is available to buy or be prescribed.. they doctors/pharmacists shouldn't be able to refuse you it because you have different morals than they do. | | | | | | |

| | Health workers should just hand over what you want, it's not up to the pharmacist to make a moral judgment on anyone. The morning after pill was the responsible thing for your friend. She didn't want any more kids, and I was very happy to see that hubby has solved the problem for good. | | | | | | |

| | No, your friend was not wrong. Grrr, I hate when medical practitioners do this...putting personal/religious/spiritual beliefs before their patient's needs. The original hippacratic oath made mention of "..causing no woman an abortion". However, in the mid 1960's it was revised, and from what I know, that line was excluded. In my opinion, if a medical professional wants to let their spiritual beliefs get into the way of their practice, then they should be practicing their field in a place where these things are outlawed, where these options are not at all available to women, or in a facility with an announced religious affiliation. The morning after pill was originally designed to help rape victims & instances of condom breakage - both instances were of responsible people and incidents occurring that were not the fault of the women. If a doctor wishes to tell me he won't give me a prescription for such a thing, not only will I be finding a new doctor, I'll be inviting the first one to pay for rearing up my brood! | | | | | | |

| | That is wrong that the doctors and the pharmacy acted that way, that is so unprofessional and it is not their place to judge. The way that I see the morning after pill is that it is just a very high dosage of birth control, you can actually take some birth control pills as a morning after method, you just take several pills instead of just one, I can't remember what website that has the list of it and how much to take of each one, but if you google it, Im sure you can find it... it is not quite as effective, but it still works. The morning after pill simply prevents conception,so it is not an abortion at all. | | | | | | |
