I want to write a novel... |
|
At least...that's what I think I want.
I love to write, but I have never written anything so complex and long as a novel before. I understand that character development is one of the most difficult challenges a writer must face when writing a story. If the characters are "off," the story is inconceivable. Trying to achieve a well developed story can be extremely time-consuming. I am almost 20 years old, but this is something I've wanted to do since elementary school. I used to write short stories in my bedroom on the weekends. Once I finished a chapter of my story, I would bring it to class for my teachers to read. I couldn't wait to share my story. I had to show 'em EVERY single chapter before the story was complete.
The other day, I was watching a favorite movie of mine. The movie is called "Purple Violets" and it got me thinking about writing a novel of my own. I told the idea to my mother; she likes it; however, she feels that I am too young to even be focusing on anything so complex. She says I should take advantage of being young, focus on college and just have fun doing other things. I find writing to be very fun and writing a novel is something I REALLY want to do, but do you think my mother's advice is best?
Also...
Since I'm so young, I must take into account that there are many things I haven't experienced yet; therefore, this could pose a real problem because publishers tend to go for books that appeal to a wide audience.
Would I be wasting my time if I decided to write a novel at my age? Would publishers laugh at me and suggest I write a teen pop novel if they hear my age?
I don't wanna write a teen pop novel...
Should I store this idea in the back of mind and bring it up later when I'm much older? I am afraid if I store this idea for too long, I will no longer feel passionate about it. I don't want that to happen. So, what do you think?
Am I asking too many questions? Lol.
Advice needed because I am unsure here.

2. Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 5 months ago | Hi steflane!
I haven't written a novel but I have read many. I mainly read non-fiction as I need to for my work. What stands out to me in a good read, whether it is fact or fiction, is the amount of knowledge the writer appears to have on the subject.
What I would suggest is to do lots of research on your subject matter. However, if you are going to write something based on your own experiences, there is less background work to do.
It is always good to try to expand your vocabulary too, so use a thesaurus, but don't go as far as Joey did in Friends. Remember that episode? haha
Good luck!

Thanks for quoting the transcript, Stef. It's brought back such happy laughs.:)
Joey IS my favourite character, despite my lust for Rachel. (shock, horror!)
You definitely have a gift for writing which is engaging, even at such a young age. So I hope you do write a novel and remember me when you are famous.:)

If I had to choose a character that I was most like it would have to be Chandler Bing.:)
Not the funniest (Joey) Not the cleverest (Ross)
But a likable chap all the same:P

Now you have got me thinking about a scene from the movie Groundhog Day. When Phil Connors is sitting in the cafe talking to Rita and she reels off her list of attributes for the perfect man. "Me, me, me"
Witty - Me Intelligent - Me Common sense - Me also
Wealthy, an indescribable job, did I mention clever? - me, me, me!
Oh, and modest to boot.:P
Here's the clip:

There is even a Bing! in the movie too. Remember Ned Ryerson?

3. James72 (6971) | 5 months ago | Rather than look to address each question one by one here Stef, all I want to say really is GO FOR IT! Nothing ventured, nothing gained is ultimately the mantra here and no matter what, you HAVE to start somewhere! Pen down you ideas, treat it as a work in progress and seek validation along the way to improve yourself. Too young? That's BS, what's age got to do with anything?WIll publishers laugh at you? NO! But they'll reject you many times for sure at first, that's what makes a person a better writer! No life experience? That's BS, you have your own unique viewpoints on life just like everyone else has! YOU know you can write, WE know you can write, so stop looking for the reasons NOT to start and just start!
It doesn't have to be a solid focus for now either. Treat it as a side project while you feel your way around everything as there's no time limit for something like this! The last thing you ever want to become is one of those people that look back at their life and say to themselves "What if?". Today is the first day of your life, get cracking!

4. Irishfrndly65 (7435) | 5 months ago | Honey, GO for it! Who gives a rat patoot what everyone else thinks? If it's your passion...right now...then DO IT! I'll be on your butt til you get it done! hee
No...really, girl, do it! Just start, if you never finish you can say you tried. If you do, then well there ya go, you did it! Pour it out. I wouldn't even worry so much about what this person says or that person says. Start writing, if it's supposed to be, it will just come out as you put pen to paper. I really believe that. I believe the best writings just poured from the pen. You may hit a snag, set it aside, it will call you back when it's ready. Really if you've that much passion about it, it WILL CALL YOU BACK!!!
You would NOT be wasting your time. I agree, do take advantage of being young. Do what you LOVE, WRITE while you're young. Write, baby, write!!!!!

5. sconibear (2559) | 5 months ago | It felt as if The Sun was running out of fuel. Straining to push away the cold that the night had dumped upon the world.
Spring had finally arrived, but it was going to take a lot of effort to erase the memory of the harsh winter that seemed to go on forever.
New life was springing up all around and old life was being reborn.
Deep within his dark, musty home, he awoke, shaking off his long winter sleep. He stretched his old tired bones wondering how many more hibernations he had left before his final slumber.
He was a kind and gentle soul, a little rough and worn looking in appearance.
He was a bear, born on the wrong side of the woods. And now he had awaken, ready to take on a new season.
He had feasted heavily, before laying down for his long winter nap. He had gorged on fresh meat and berries, which sustained him through his slumber. But now he needed more, his pre-winter meal was digested, all it's nutrients absorbed.
And now he hoped all the woodland creatures, gave him ample clearance to do the inevitable.
He grabbed a magazine and roll of toilet paper, and went to leave his mark on the world.......

Yeah......go for it Stef.....you have "writer" in your soul. And I wouldn't be mad if you put a dedication in your first novel to your favorite bear!

| 6. nicholasckh (3) | 5 months ago | Well it doesn't matter what you want to write, because it is something that you love doing. And the most important of all is that you are taking a brave step to explore. I'm sure no publisher will laugh at you because they we're once like you too. So start writing and let your creativity go wild; and maybe we might own your books in years to come.

7. manunulat (403) | 5 months ago | Don't wait till you get old. One thing that can help you a lot in writing a good story is to experience the scene- if you have opportunities to travel then do so. You should also keep a small notebook around so that when an idea pops in or when you come across with something, you can also take down notes. Most writers have their influences, so appreciate also some works of others... that way you can develop your own style and creativity as you progress. When you're done with your manuscript, find a mentor or editor who can help you put things in place for publication.

manunulat (403) | 5 months ago | Yep, it helped a lot my friend. Besides, most scientists also have their own notes so it's a good thing that you have too. Our brain can store a lot of information simply by observing the surroundings but retrieving may be a problem and not all people can do like what a computer does. Sometimes computers need to be organized too in order for you to retrieve some age-old files. Awwwwwwwww.

8. Abhii88 (122) | 5 months ago | ahh nice.
At this age one gets fascinated very easily. He/She wants to do everything what he finds interesting. On the other hand there is no age to start anything new. If you think you have this capability its very good and you should stick to it. Your mom is right and you should focus on studies too.
In my view keep this idea for future or you can start it right now. It's not a one-day thing or a months. Keep writing the chapters. It will need a lot of EDITING. But give youself some time before you start anything.
ALL THE BEST

9. Keola12 (408) | 5 months ago | No, I don't think your mother's advise is best. If writing a novel is what you want to do, then go for it. I had my novel Dominica's Inferno published by PublishAmerica under my pen name Joanna Maharis. Your never too young or too old to write a novel. As long as you have the perseverence, motivation and strong desire to write a novel, there is no reason why you shouldn't give it a try.

| 10. AnemicRoyalty (17) | 5 months ago | I think it's great that you want to write a novel. And it doesn't even matter if it gets published or not, the point is that you would be doing something that you enjoy and that is never "time consuming". Also, when you say that you are young and you don't have much experience in writing a novel, I believe writing a novel itself is an experience, and you'll find out how much you'll grow as a person by exploring yourself and your limits. Writing a novel shouldn't matter how old or how experienced you are, not even how talented as a writer, as long as you enjoy doing it. On the other hand, if you are planning on writing a BEST SELLER, then no one can promise you that even if you do have the "proper" age for writing or whatever else is needed to get you in that category. I've always wanted to write a novel and I will most like be starting one soon, i'm 25 and I enjoy writing. Even if nothing ever is accomplished with writing that novel, just the experience is what I'm looking for, everything else is a BONUS, if it is ever achieved. In the meantime, I keep writing everyday, and everywhere...lol
Good luck,
A.
