Right now my neck and back are killing me and I am using a heat pack on it to see if it helps but my question is how does heat help neck or back pains? What is the heat doing?

Thats a very good question. A few days ago I hurt my back. I'm still not sure as to how, but I can hardly bend over. Today I was telling my husband just how bad my back felt & he made me promise to use the heating pad on it which I agreed to do. But like you I have to ask why people tell you to do that when your back hurts. To me this only helps a little bit & doesn't really relieve the pain fully so I have to wonder, whats the point?

myLot reputation of 97/100. DanielleA (978)   ranked 94 out of 3,932 in thinker  4 months ago

I am so sorry that your back is being a pain......lol That kinda sounded funny. .............. blink...Anywhoooo..I agree with you. The heat does help while it is on there I guess but as soon as I take it off I think, well great what now. It still hurts. I am having the same problem with bending down which makes me so sad because I feel like an 80 year old woman when really I am 18!

I hope that you can find ways to reduce your back pain since it is just horrible and not very comfortable. good luck and thank you so very very much for your time and for your answer.

Heat helps improve the blood circulation, to the parts where it is applied. The pain in the first place, is because there is some soreness inside. So on application of heat the blood circulation increases and helps heal the soreness inside. happyThen the pain reduces.

Popular medical advice (that I have heard) is to use ice or cold pack first to reduce swelling in your muscles that causes pain. Then you apply heat to release the tension and inflammation in your muscles.

Personally I like using heat as well, but I will use a cold compress when I have migraines.

myLot reputation of 98/100. cbeee3 (844)   ranked 409 out of 3,932 in thinker  4 months ago

That is correct. To reduce swelling we use ice, especially for new injuries.
But if there is no swelling and there is stiffness or soreness then we use heat.

Hot compress improves blood flow.
Cold compress reduces blood flow and so reduces the swelling as well.It constricts the inflammation of muscles and blood vessels.

Tank you very much for that clarification.

Well, I guess heat helps by relaxing the muscle and keeping it from being very tight. It loosens it up, and gets rid of the pain. It prevents sore/tense muscles.

Very good explanation. Thank you so very very much for your help and answer. Happy MyLotting! happy

Well as far as i Know, Heat helps to reduce neck pain by improving circulation in the area. It also decreases muscle spasms and relaxes muscle stiffness.

I imagine it helps your blood get nutrients to the aching muscles by expanding the capillaries (teeny-tiny veins).

Maybe it also does other stuff, but it's mainly the blood-thing.

Hi and smile.
The heat actually relax tense muscles. See spa and other relaxation remedies, they always use heat. When the muscles are already relaxed, they will feel better. I know people with high blood pressure also advise to take a warm bath before sleep because it relaxes body and help in maintaining good sleep.
Happy mylotting and smile always!
