How Is Heat Supposed To Help Neck/Back Pain? |
|
Right now my neck and back are killing me and I am using a heat pack on it to see if it helps but my question is how does heat help neck or back pains? What is the heat doing?

1. RobsWife10706 (998) | 4 months ago | Thats a very good question. A few days ago I hurt my back. I'm still not sure as to how, but I can hardly bend over. Today I was telling my husband just how bad my back felt & he made me promise to use the heating pad on it which I agreed to do. But like you I have to ask why people tell you to do that when your back hurts. To me this only helps a little bit & doesn't really relieve the pain fully so I have to wonder, whats the point?

| 3. MelissasCrate (39) | 4 months ago | Popular medical advice (that I have heard) is to use ice or cold pack first to reduce swelling in your muscles that causes pain. Then you apply heat to release the tension and inflammation in your muscles.
Personally I like using heat as well, but I will use a cold compress when I have migraines.

cbeee3 (844) | 4 months ago | That is correct. To reduce swelling we use ice, especially for new injuries. But if there is no swelling and there is stiffness or soreness then we use heat.
Hot compress improves blood flow. Cold compress reduces blood flow and so reduces the swelling as well.It constricts the inflammation of muscles and blood vessels.

4. merlinsorca (471) | 4 months ago | Well, I guess heat helps by relaxing the muscle and keeping it from being very tight. It loosens it up, and gets rid of the pain. It prevents sore/tense muscles.

5. keep_onwatch (1577) | 4 months ago | Well as far as i Know, Heat helps to reduce neck pain by improving circulation in the area. It also decreases muscle spasms and relaxes muscle stiffness.

6. mythman (1125) | 4 months ago | I imagine it helps your blood get nutrients to the aching muscles by expanding the capillaries (teeny-tiny veins).
Maybe it also does other stuff, but it's mainly the blood-thing.

7. iamsolucky (1178) | 4 months ago | Hi and smile. The heat actually relax tense muscles. See spa and other relaxation remedies, they always use heat. When the muscles are already relaxed, they will feel better. I know people with high blood pressure also advise to take a warm bath before sleep because it relaxes body and help in maintaining good sleep. Happy mylotting and smile always!
