Ring worm help?? email this discussion to a friend?

So, my cat ended up with ringworm and now is on medication for that. However, upon examining my rabbit found out that she has a spot of ringworm on her belly. Has anyone else had this problem? How is it treated? What should she be washed up with to prevent it from spreading? Any information at this time would be helpful I am new to owning a rabbit. Thanks in advance.

I would contact your veterinarian who prescribed the cat's medication and let them know that you think the rabbit has ringworm too. They can either prescribe additional medication or refer you to a small animal vet who will be able to rid your rabbit of ringworm. My biggest suggestion: Don't wait! Call tomorrow. The reason: Ringworm is a zoonotic disease, meaning that people can get it too. So the longer your animals have ringworm, the more likely the will spread it to you, and then you'll need meds from your doctor. This is one of those things that you want to "nip in the bud". Best wishes for a speedy resolution!

Thank you for the helpful suggestions. The vet that I take my dogs and cats to don't do rabbits. So, I am trying to find a vet that specializes in rabbits right now. Once again thank you.

If it spreads to an adult, it's not a huge problem because it is easily treated in humans. But some schools will not allow a child with ringworm to come to school since kids will pick at it and spread it to their classmates.

Ringworm is a fungus, so you'll need an antifungal medication. There is one very common over the counter medication that I usually use on guinea pigs and it will also work on rabbits provided they won't lick it off (apply only a thin coat, just in case!). The common name is Monistat, or miconazole. It's a cream for yeast infections and it also works extremely well on ringworm.

If you're into natural remedies, gentian violet also works extremely well, but it will stain everything the rabbit comes into contact with. Only apply it to that spot.

If the rabbit has several spots and will tolerate a bath, Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo is antifungal and will help. Then apply cream or gentian violet to the spots individually after the rabbit is dry.

Hope that helps! It should clear up within 2-3 weeks. If not, your rabbit might have immune system problems and should definitely see a vet if there is no improvement after a week.

Thank you for all the helpful information. Upon taking her to the vet we discovered that it was not ringworm that she had an allergic reaction to fleas. So, I went home and cleaned everything top to bottom, and put flea medication on the dog. Pig [rabbit] is now doing better her bald spot is clearing up and everyone is flea free. Thank you once again.
