Divorced mom would like to return to school but... |
|
I don't know if my situation is unique, but being divorced and remarried to a also divorced spouse can be hard on the finances. Since I have 50/50 custoday I don't get child support. My husband now has to pay for his kids. Which means in our family if we want something we would have to work extra hard perhaps get another job. We both work full time but can't seem to find money to want to do anything. I'd like to return to school but I don't want to waste time and money if later on I can't get a job with my degree. Are you having the same problem?

jashoaf (227) | 5 months ago | It's never too late. I took an on-line course at 45. Learning is a little harder, you have to apply yourself more than when you were younger. But you can do it!
Now is a good time for women who sant to go back to college to look at grants and loans. Somebody else mentioned that, and they are right! There is funding out there specifically for moms returning to school.
Narrow your idea down. "Art" is too vague. Think of something you sould like to do specifically, then see if there is a market for it. You could also start your own business as a side venture until it gets going.
Another idea: Some colleges, like DeVry, will help you get a job when you complete the course. This might be a good option.

There is a lot of that available for parents that go back to school as they are considered non-traditional students. If you do go back to school you should definitely make sure that the field that you are going into is one where there is a high demand for employees. Who knows, perhaps when you get done with school the economy will be better and the jobs will be plentiful.

awhitehill (162) | 5 months ago | See when you're married to a divorced person as well your money is counted against you by that I mean he makes enough for the family but we're still poor. We're talking monthly expenses he needs to make but is counted as income. I don't think I'd be qualify for grants. I'm sure for loan and I'd hate to think that I have to pay money back if later I can't find a job after graduating. I like art so there's not much out there for people in that field.

Have you tried researching programs?. Theres no point in you going for a random course if your not interested in it. If your picking a job based on its salary or income I guarentee it they can tell with interviews and your work ethics. I would look at courses your interested in and go from there.
Have you also thought about going to school part time or online?. With this type of education you can still work while going to school.
Most schools will offer funding, grants and loans. As well as banks. But this money will have to paid back in a set time. With my school we have months to start paying it back or interest get docked onto it.
Going back to school isnt cheap have you tried putting so much in another accounnt each pay day and it will add up. I work 4 months part time and have enough for the year (tuition and school related bills) while still paying all my bills. I use coupons and samples to save money. Also, am very Frugal which you have to be when your in college. They have hidden fees that pop out of nowwhere.
If you motivated and really wanting to go back to school not just for the money but for a job you will love. You ll find a way to go and get through it.

awhitehill (162) | 5 months ago | Oh I have a an associate degree in computer but it's outdated. Yes I remember paying back loans. I'm always good at paying back loans. Ruining my credit is the last thing I want to do. I don't think I'll be motivated enough to try online classes. So much reading most of them boring. I have a mortgage right now and the house needs this and that to make it liveable. There's always something to fix.

It's not easy for her, but she is doing great and she only paid $50 out of pocket. So maybe check some of them and ask about the grant's.
