Do we still need to take care of the Vietman Veterans? |
|
This issue hits home for me and I just can not get it out of my mind. The other evening a group of friends came to the house for a bbq - as it turns out many of them has served in Nam and began talking about how things were when they returned home. I listened to one man cry as he explained that he was drafted and forced to fight and then came home and was spit on as he got off the ship. It seemed to me that his pain was still very real and he made need help. Do we as a country still owe them help or should they be over it now?

1. Laurie1986 (285) | 4 months ago | Dear God, how spooky...my uncle just told the same story to my family last week. We knew, of course, but that was the most detail I'd ever gotten from him on the subject. We have so much to be proud of when it comes to that generation; it's such a shame that it's marred by things like that. It should have been Congress and President Johnson they were spitting on.
I think we absolutely owe them help, counsel, comfort and respect--whatever they need. We as a country made a serious mistake in blaming those young kids for the mistakes made by men much older and much more powerful than they were, and we sure as hell should be making up for it now, any way we can.

Trensue (1219) | 4 months ago | And now I need to explain why the question. I am married to a Vietnam Vet. He is 12 years older than me and that is enough to make a difference in understanding what even happened then. I was not prepared for all the "left overs" that still haunt him and sadly the reaction I get from most is that he should just get over it. I don't think he can.

Trensue (1219) | 4 months ago | And yet the other day we were at an event where the Flag was posted and the national anthem was performed. I did not recognize the way my husband was standing. Apparently there is a proper way to stand as a former member of the military when this happens. A man came and told my husband if he didn't have enough respect to put his hand on his heart he should get the h*ll out of the country. Needless to say things went downhill from there. It is all so confusing and misunderstood.

4. hiccup (6438) | 4 months ago | Anyone who wears the nations Uniform, deserves respect, The nation asked then to go, they went and did what the Nation wanted Right or Wrong.
The Nation has a DEPT to pay to each and everyone of these people and they should never be forgotten and should receive all the care that is needed to give them a form of Quality of Life.
You are never the same after that service, I am one, I struggle, I am AUSTRALIAN and PROUD of it, I went to Vietnam, I am proud of that also, I got spat on by my the PEOPLE OF THE NATION.
How foolish they are, then they are the first to say they have the right of speech, I say WHO GAVE YOU THAT, THOSE WHO SERVED THE NATION DID, FOOL.

5. Polly1 (8459) | 4 months ago | Our country does still owe them. Vietnam vets have not been treated right. I have a good friend that was drafted, he became a medic. He was also a POW for a long time, he was also tortured. He was shot several times, patched up and stuck back out in the war zone. They needed all the medics they could get. He was shot in the hip and they left the bullet in, they couldn't get to it. When it came time for him to get out of the service, he wanted out as fast as he could, he didn't want anything more to do with them. He was also treated badly, he had many problems adjusting to civilian life. Many years later, his hip started bothering him, eventually he went to the doc, his hip was is so bad it needs replaced. Since his hip is so bad, it has caused his knee on the other leg to go bad. He has been trying to get a disibility wih the VA for many years, they keep deneying him, they say its been too long. He also has neuropathy, they deny that claim too. He also has a sholder problem from when he was in the service, he recently filed a claim for that. Supposidly all his records burned up someplace. I think thats a bunch of hooey. I know for a fact that lot of Nam vets are not treated right. now I will say that the health care system has been top notch for veterens, My hubby used the VA health care system, they were great.

| uncducks (24) | 3 weeks ago | First of all thank you for serving. I also was in the service at that time. I was a Gong Ho fool who enlisted to go to Vietnam. I had two brother who were in at the time, One was Marine nd the other was in The Nave, he was medic and served in Vietnam. He died five years ago from MS and other problems, He never was right after he came back. I joined the Army because my father, both grandfathers and my uncles were in the Army. Like I said I wanted to go to Nam but as we were getting ready to get our orders a lot of us were diverted to Korea because the North started trouble there. They wanted to get us fighting on two fronts. I was there from March 68 to May 69 with the 1/72 Armored Battalion which had their camp about a quarter of a mile from the DMZ. Their was fire fights every night and we were told that if the North came over in full force we had only five minutes to live. They had millions of men on their DMZ we only had a few thousand. We were their only to slow them down until Seoul could get their defenses up and ready. Try living with that thought everyday. I to was spit on after I got back and it is not very good feeling to know your own countrymen hated you. They did not realize that if we let those people have their way, we would not be a free country today. I also have many health problem related to the Agent Orange spraying, Yes they sprayed that stuff over in Korea also. I have Peripheral Neuropathy also and it is not a very nice thing to have. I also was denied any help from VA along with many others who really need the help. I have gone on long enough but just wanted you to know that, yes these Vets (All of them) deserve all the help their government can give them. Thank you fellow Veterans and those fighting now. We could have won the war in VietNam if we were allowed to fight the way the American men can.

Polly1 (8459) | 3 weeks ago | Thank you uncducks for your service. I am so sorry for all of your toubles. I wish you lots of luck in fighting the VA for your rights. I don't know your circumstances of course, but if your not in the VA health care system, you should really consider trying to get into it. The Health care system is really good. I would also keep figting trying to get a disability from the VA. They recently got lots of money to help veterens exposed to the agent orange. The neuropothy that you have is a condition that you can get from exposure of it. My friend has it too and was denied, but he keeps fighting. American men don't give up the fight, May God Bless You.

6. vandana7 (1301) | 4 months ago | Though I dont belong to ur country, I feel all veterans, whether they win or lose the war for the country deserve to be treated well. The decision to go for war is not theirs, nor is the withdrawal. They just follow orders. They risk their lives out there for a belief so that we can revel in it. It is so unfair to treat them horribly. Many of them are possibly psychologically scarred for the rest of their lives. Those who do atrocious things like spitting should be forcibly drafted. Then they will realize what being in armed forces is all about.
