The economy is not the best these days. Some states have run out of money and are no longer able to pay unemployment. Some people are out of a job for over 2 years. How are you dealing with this situation? Do you think the economy is going to turn around soon? If you are unemployed, how long have you been unemployed and what are you doing now? How to you try to make extra money? Are you going to school for extra education or do you participate in any programs your state offers for re-training? What is your advice to other people?

I head that from a lot of people that there are no jobs around. Also people tell my employers use the economy to cut wages and hire people and pay them less then what they would have paid them years ago?

We live in a small town and there are no jobs at all right now, just nothing. My boyfriend works, I try to help out with the crafts that I make and sell, and doing jobs for our land lord when he needs stuff done. A friend of my mother is finding it very hard to find a job as places keep telling her she is over-qualified for the position and jobs she is qualified for are not accepting new applications or are not hiring. It's tough right now, for everyone. I hope things improve soon but I'm not seeing any sign of improvement.

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

Have you tried to sell your crafts online or are you already doing it. If so I'm interested in how you doing with it or better said how it is done.

myLot reputation of 84/100. letsee77 (154)   ranked 2,292 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

Well I used to use eBay but the subscription fees for a seller at times took more then I made for the month so I stopped using that. I sell more at fairs, in booths, or at parties. I also used etsy, which I also used to use. Etsy is a place online for people to sell their hand made items. A similar site is bluejay, it's not yet as popular as etsy but it's picking up more and more traffic so it's only a matter of time till it gets up there. If your interested in selling hand made items/crafts that you do, I would recommend taking a peek at etsy.

Thank you for the info. I do more painting then other stuff. My boyfriend has been asking me to open a studio. Our city offers free studio space of 6 months. I don't think I'm that good when it comes to painting that I would make enough money.
A friend told me that ebay can become expensive. Plus what a lot of people do on ebay is they drive the bit up for their own stuff. Just to make sure they are not going to sell their stuff at a loss.

Hi ellaprice76, I liked your comment so much on my facebook discussion that I decided to see what you had posted. This is a good discussion because it is affecting everyone. I live in France and the economy is terrible here too, all from the domino effect after the US economy tanked. My husband has been unemployed because his company went under in February. The company took 4 months just to finalize the bankruptcy papers and it wasn't until that time that he was given the right to unemployment... usually unemployment here is wonderful, but the company screwed us pretty bad. It wasn't until 5 months after he stopped working that he could get the unemployment that he had been paying taxes for for the 2 years he worked at that job. Also, since that all happened, he didn't have the opportunity to work with unemployment agencies until it all got settled either (and seriously, I don't know how to find job ads outside of the unemployment agencies website).

I work during the school year as a part time English teacher in the public schools. It's paid well for only being 12 hours a week, but it's not enough for even one of us to live off of. I have decided to try to tutor English, do unofficial walking tours of Paris' touristic areas and now I have opened a shop on DaWanda to sell my handmade bags, wallets and my husband's art work. Check it out: http://en.dawanda.com/shop/the-grab-bag

I
have no idea if any of this is going to work, but I am not going to sit here and watch my bank account drain without trying to do something about it.

how are you dealing with the economy? Has it touched you like so many of us?

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

WOW you are from France. Your English is so good I would have never noticed. I'm from Germany but have been living in the States for many years. I like your idea on selling handmade bags. You should think about advertising them in the States. Americans like stuff from France and they like handmade stuff.
I just looked at your site. Have you thought about putting it on ebay?
I think some of my friends are going to like your bags. Shipping and payment euro versus dollar may be an issue. People here are not going to know how much a euro is.

agirnow (82)   ranked 9,021 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

Haha, I am an American in Paris... that's why you wouldn't notice my writing. Thank you for your excitement about my shop. If you have friends who are interested, they can always contact me and I will sell anything in my shop for dollars... I need those too for when I go home. I like DaWanda because it's international but also because it is specific to handmade and there is no listing fee. If you or your friends are interested, have them contact me through my DaWanda shop and I can make almost anything you would like.

I don't know if this is going to really help me get out of my financial problems, but it relieves stress and makes me feel productive. Plus so far, all of my creations are made with materials that I already had. So right now it's not costing me a penny! I will be adding stuff constantly, so keep checking in if you like! There are lots of wonderful items in other shops too.

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

I will let my friends know. I will tell them to contact you directly. Maybe you will be able to sell some to my friends who don't have cash flow problems.

I see you are from India. Good luck with your business. Starting a business in the US can come with great risks. I did some research and many small business owners told me stories about being sued by customers for something not being their fault or customers not paying etc

I lost my job back in December 2008, due to the company closing. I am currently drawing my unemployment, I have no benefits and no medical insurance. I give thanks to God that I am currently doing good. I am able to pay for my doctor's visit on a pay plan and I get one of my meds for free from the manufacturer, and the other one I get from Walmart for $4.00. My advice is to not give up, trust in God and do a lot of researching, cut back on some of the things in your life.

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

I always thought the medical insurance continues of a year if you lose your job.

myLot reputation of 97/100. Chevee (3598)   ranked 127 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

Mine didn't, it was told to us in one of the meetings that our insurance was canceled the moment we left out the door for the last time. I have proof of it, my blood work was filed for insurance and they told them that I no longer had insurance with that company.

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

I need to check that out I really thought that they couldn't drop the coverage just like that or at least give you the option to pay the insurance yourself.

I hate unemployment. I loved my job. The company cut back on staff and my branch closed I was given a months notice but that was no time to find a new job when I had to work 45 hours a week there until the date they gave us.

That was one year ago, finding a job is so difficult, qualifications are expensive and more qualified people who already have jobs end up getting them. How am I supposed to fund a course without a job?!

It's unfair that people who already have good jobs are moving around companies, because in my old work, when someone left for a new job they would rarely be replaced or the vacancy would be advertised as part time or something.

ellaprice76 (88)   ranked 1,293 out of 19,032 in questions & answers  4 months ago

Your profile said you are in the UK. Isn't the UK as the rest of Europa meaning 35 hour work week and education is free . I'm just curious since you said qualifications are expensive. They are very expensive in the US. I'm paying between $200.00 and $500.00 to take the exams for some of my certifications that is without the books and class work, plus to sit for the exams you need to have a certain amount of class hours no matter how many years you went to college.

GREAT TOPIC...

Hello mylotters, my name is Brenda and I have been unemployed for over 2 years now. I was let go during the Mortgage meltdown. At first I thought it was a blessing. I mean REAL ESTATE IS TOUGH! Mentally, emotionally and physically. I just don't want to be that person giving, taking or pushing you about your home!!! I have enjoyed my employment opportunities with retailers as well, but these days I will be lucky to get a quarter over minimun wage....SALE OR MANAGEMENT POSITIONS. Talk about hard to get by...

DAY AFTER DAY, I do SOMETHING, ANYTHING to find something that helps take the edge off of paying my bills. Believe me, when I lost my job the bills didn't stop. They just seemed to be outrageous. I barely get by, just by extending my "due dates". I have taken extra continuation adult classes to learn a new hands on job training, but these are costing me as well. I can't say that I'm getting enough out of it, but I'm doing what I can.

In addition the going back to school, I have taken up on some of the PTC sites I have heard about. Hopefully I actually get a legitimate payout. Besides, any cash is better than no cash. Good luck to all you continueing job seekers. You are not alone. I hurt too.

Here in the Philippines we experienced also the crisis many companies shut down and many experienced unemployment and I'm one of them. I try to find ways to earn even a small amount. It is a blessing that I not married because it is very hard to support a family now a days. It seems that the crisis didn't affect us because life here is very difficult and it is not new to us. We can find ways to survive and we can live as simple as we could. We plan to go to the province so we can manage our farm there.

I graduated in 2008 and become a worker.I changed my job five times, but now,I am still searching for a better one.During finance crisis,we should try to find more chances,I don't understand why so many people can not find a job, some people say:"because they don't want to do some job with low pay."luckly,I am not a person in this line.each job can make my ability stronger and stronger.then I can find what I really want.the road lying before you, everything is determined by yourself.
I always tell myself that I should always try to learn as much as possible.I don't have much in my mind and my pocket, but I will have everything one day.I must work hard to get them, and they will not come to find me.
So,frinds who havn't find a job or stay in home and fred by your parents, you'd better go out to find your world.

lily_20090823 (1)  4 months ago

Thumbs up to you for having so many opportunities (and I'm not being sarcastic, I mean that with the upmost respect), but I should have added a little more information. Within these 2 years I have had an unsuccessful Reception job, Call center position and billing responsibilities, but none to keep me on a steady payroll due to downfall. I can't seem to STAY employed in order to survive! I agree with you about "pay rate" not being of importance...to some extent. I would be in that category, but I applied for a regular cashiers position at McDonalds, Subway and Target in which all offer minimum wage only...and didn't get the job.

Concurrently being employed and going back to school my career goals have changed immensely.

AVG0409, I didn't know there was a slowing down in the job market, in the Philipines. I can certainly be grateful that I do not have a family of my own during these times. It would be tormenting not to be able to provide.

Thx:)
