whats the deal with the insurance changes on Ebay? |
|
they say on sept 22nd they arent going to have the option and i dont understand why. i mean i have read in several different areas and in one area it says you can still offer it but then another area says you cant offer it.. im totally confused!! are requiring us to pay for insurance when we sell now?!? as a seller i think only 1 time has the person bought insurance on an item but i liked being able to give the option.. if i have to pay for it mandatory then thats gonna end up screwing me out of money..
so can some one explain what they mean? talk to me like im two since apparently im having issues understanding several different sources that claim to explain it lol

1. Ruthep (5930) | 5 months ago | It says that if you use UPS the insurance isn't needed if the value is under $100. But for the post office you'd still have to buy it. So to me it sounds like they want you to go through UPS which isn't really an option for us. There is no UPS store close to us. But I don't think anyone has ordered insurance. But it mentioned different ways through the post office such as declared value or certified mail. I always purchase insurance when I buy things.

moonlitmagikchild (7151) | 5 months ago | i would have to drive a half hour to UPS store! i have a usps right near me and always use them.. i never buy anything too expensive so i dont personally buy it on ebay and i usually dont sell expensive things so that explains why i dont get asked..
ok so by going through the us post office i have to include insurance then? god i dont know if they are confusing or if i am easily confused tonight lol

Ruthep (5930) | 5 months ago | It sounds confusing to me. But it said also that you could charge shipping to include the cost of insurance. Most times we go by how ebay calculates shipping and when it comes time to mail it without insurance it usually costs less than they paid.

moonlitmagikchild (7151) | 5 months ago | i just guesstimate on how much to charge since i dont have scales or things already in a box to figure it up.. some times i do a little over and sometimes its bit me in the butt because i would be shipping 3000 miles away or something

2. elmiko (1848) | 5 months ago | well theres people on ebay who sell things and never send the package and take peoples payment. it obviously gets the buyers mad. i would assume this is why they ask sellers to pay for insurance just in case someone frauds a buyer. it sounds like a problem that has been going on too long so thats why insurance is required. Theres many good sellers on ebay with a very good reputation i've seen though so the frauds don't last anyway. this is just probably a way to satisfy the buyer just in case something like this occurs so they don't get ripped off. its good for the buyer but such as in your case where you don't sell things worth alot money it obviously isn't.

3. charles63 (132) | 5 months ago | The reason eBay is banning offering optional insurance from listings is because sellers are are automatically liable if the item is lost or damaged while in transit if the payment is made by PayPal or credit card. Offering optional insurance creates the false impression that the buyer has to buy extra insurance to have this protection. Sellers can adjust their shipping charges to take into account an occasional loss and they should come out ok. It's much less of a burdon than paying for insurance on every item they sell.

moonlitmagikchild (7151) | 5 months ago | so what your saying is the seller just ad a little extra cost and eats it if it ever comes down to it and doesnt have to actually physically buy insurance?? i swear ebay has changed so much this last year or two that its driving me nuts trying to keep up and understand..

charles63 (132) | 5 months ago | My idea was to add a little to the s&h charge and use the extra money to build up a reserve to cover any loss or damage. Your customers are then paying for these loses. It's not a matter of being suddenly liable for these losses. You've been liable for them all along for PayPal and Credit Card customers. I understand your frustration with eBay's barrage of changes, but this one doesn't seem to be too unmanageable.

General_Spacey (1194) | 5 months ago | I just saw a news story about how the burial crypt above Marylin Monroe was on e-bay. And the "winner" backed out. It seems that it goes both ways, the insurance is in case of the buyer that the insurance is for when the product was not as described.
