Computer Monitor Problem - Please Help!!! | | | | We have a Samsung SyncMaster 711 MP Computer/LCD TV Monitor that loos like it's on the way out. A few days ago, after I switched the computer on, I found that the monitor stayed black, made a "clicking" noise, was flickering/flashing like an electric shortcut and would stay like that for a few minutes before turning on. I hadn't moved any cables or anything and everything is connected securely. This morning I went to power on the computer and the monitor was just dead. Even the green power light didn't flash unless the "source" button on the remote control/screen was pressed. We have a spare PC Monitor that hasn't been used for a few years and hooked that up, it was dead too. My DH connected the Samsung monitor into a socket and rigged it as if to watch TV, the same flashing light/clicking noise was made. Unplugged it, connected it back to the computer and after a few minutes got it working again. Albeit it took a good ten minutes, and while it was "coming back to life" I could see the desktop screen in between the flashing. Would anyone have any clue as to what the cause may be, and any solution in fixing this problem? The monitor is only 3 years old and cost near €400 when we bought it. Any advice would be so much appreciated (am looking into buying a new monitor but if this was can be saved I'd rather that). Thanks in advance, Fiona. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | Hi adam1980, I do keep the monitor and keyboard cleaned every day, and dust around the plugs and sockets weekly. My son pointed out to me yesterday that the back of the computer box (where you can see the fan), is filled with dust. It probably needs a good clean but to do that I need to switch everything off. I'm reluctant to do that for fear of it not starting next time - I have put so much work into starting earning online with PTC, Surveys, Forum Participating (and creating blogs to share my adventure with other like-minded people) it would pain me so much to be without the computer for even a day!!! But thank you, I shall see what I can do. | | | | | | | Free Computer Recycling Pickup or Drop-off: Laptops-CRTs- TVs-Monitors-Printers-All Ewaste! www.allgreenrecycling.com | add comment | | | |

| | I would still go to contacts angel, please re-check again the power and vga cable at both ends, particularly the pins - maybe one is misaligned or not properly fitted. 3 years is too young for an LCD to go. | | | | | | | fmpisces (1204)

| | Hi ferdzNK, I am that bad I had to go look up what a vga cable was but Wikepedia were very helpful, and even showed a picture so I know what you're talking about. My DH checked all the connections and says everything looks fine, but I'll ask him to have another look. I don't like leaving the PC on 24/7 but I may until the weekend, and look into buying a cheapy monitor (€89 in Argos). It's a bother though, could do without the extra expense especially at this time of year with my youngest son's birthday and going back to school expenses. I would've thought there'd be more life in the Samsung than just 3 years. | | I know you've said you've checked your connections but I still think that is the likliest culprit. Have you checked that none of the cables have kinks in them and that they're all securely in place. If they are, you might be better off trying to buy or borrow some new cables to test - much cheaper than getting a new monitor. Good luck with it. | | | | | | | fmpisces (1204)

| | Hi Boffle, thanks for your comment. We replaced the monitor last Saturday, everything worked fine but despite forking out €130 for it, the silly thing doesn't have speakers, or an audio connection! Luckily, though, we have a set of headphones that can be plugged into the computer itself so when I need audio, I can that way. I thought it was the monitor to be honest, after it wouldn't work as a TV either.Just when I thought everything was sorted after fixing up the new monitor, on Sunday when I booted up the computer it kept crashing on me, then I knew something was seriously up when the start button and taskbar totally disappeared, and I had to do a full system restore, losing all my programs and data in the process. I was unable to back up everything at the last minute as it just kept crashing. It was a lesson learnt! - I have now got EVERYTHING saved on a USB stick if the worse should happen again. Gosh, it was the mother of all viruses that AVG did not detect. Thanks for your help.
