I blame the news for this one! |
|
My son is ten and up until a recent celebrity death had never heard of MJ. But it took over the Greek news and each day he would inform me of something new he'd just heard, he was murdered, he killed himself, he's still alive, they're fighting over the money. It still goes on and yesterday he announced he now has a video game out even though he is no more. So what has my delightful son gone and done?
Found MJ's videos on the internet and is now blasting them out to annoy me. I suppose I should blame myself for not censoring the news but I think the news is good for chldren. But obviously not when reported to excess. Your thoughts.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | You have exactly taken my point Stvasile, when celebrity nonsense takes over the news what are we reducing our knowledge to. Okay report it once but not endlessly. Is it any wonder I don't hear of anything happening in your country if the news is obsessed by things like wearing shorts, I have to find out on here about organ stealing in India because all the TV news reports are filled with things of little importance. I was particularly suprised that the Greek news made such a song and dance with all the MJ coverage as I don't believe he was particularly newsworthy here before this and certainly Greek music remains the music of choice. I especially cringe when deaths of worthy people receive no more than a passing mention. As you also rightly point out the previous criticisms miraculously drop. Years ago I was absolutely appalled when the coverage of a royal in the UK dominated the worldwide media even though the persons fame was simply being married to someone of inherited title. Even my favourite quality paper which only the week before had been denigrating the mindlessness of this person there was barely an inch of space not dedicated to the event and suddenly turning this person into an icon. It was pathetic. On the same day the death of a rather great writer Jeffrey Bernard, received approx two lines of obiturary, he would have been intensely annoyed by that as he did rather like to be in the limelight.

stvasile (5393) | 5 months ago | Sir Edmund Hillary died on Jan 11 2008. Nobody mentioned his pass. He is of course known for being the first man on the Everest. He also helped building many schools and hospitals in Nepal, helping the Sherpa people. He declared this was the greatest achievement of his life. He was never nominee for a Nobel Peace Prize.
In a short while, on Mars 19 2008 died Sir Arthur C. Clarke. He as a brilliant science-fiction writer and inventor. You might know him for writing the Space Odyssey. He helped testing the first radar and he is the one that proposed the project of the satellite communications systems. In his late years, he settled in Sri Lanka trying to solve the mysteries of the World. Nobody mentioned his death either...
My eyers wet every time I remember these two great men are gone. And they are only two examples, like many others...

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | For me it was the death of Simon Wiesenthal, my greatest hero, who barely received a mention yet deserved a whole month of coverage. That would have been news which could have really educated younger generations.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Letran, I rather suspect that you have also grasped the point i was making, my child has been amazed that something of so little newsworthiness rather took over and for so long. So I have the question what did he do, well he made songs and danced, tried to turn himself white, lived in an expensive disneyland style house, had no sense of how to deal with money, and invited young boys to sleep in his bed. This was the extent of what I knew and filled my son in with (I'd watched the Martin Bashir interview). But even after my explanation he still found it annoying to sit through so repeated coverage of the same thing but then began to find it all rather amusing. The point about the game seemed to be what's the point as he won't get the money now he's dead, which lead to an explantion of exploitive lawyers.

3. Sandra1952 (1614) | 5 months ago | Hello, Thea. I expect your son is just going through a temporary kid's obssession on this, and by this time next week he'll have moved on to something else. Difficult as it may seem, you can hasten the moment by ignoring the MJ blasts if you can. The positive thing to take from this is that your son has at least exhibited an ability to absorb and process what he hears on the news.

4. wolfie34 (13920) | 5 months ago | If they don't hear from the news, they hear it from other sources even at that age my friend, so even if you do censor the news etc, they will still find out, does he use the computer? He can pick up things from the internet obviously, with newsflashes that come on Yahoo for example, he can pick things up from school, from his peers even just by listening when he goes out, so you can't stop him hearing about it and sadly that's life, you want to protect your children from what's going on but the sad fact of life is that they have to know that the world is not a wonderful place and bad things do happen, it also I believe makes them tougher as well and probably smarter too, because he is learning, whether he is hearing bad news or not, he is still learning and probably he knows more about MJ than Wolfie, so that is something. We cannot shield children from everything sadly. Your son actually sounds quite intelligent and obviously older than his ten years which I think is admirable. But never blame yourself my friend. I am sure he would have heard about it regardless.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Wolfie, now you've actually read me all wrong on this one my friend. Whilst of course I wish to protect my son physically I would never attempt to censor the news from him to protect him from things going on in the world, my objection here that he was constantly bombarded with the same piece of news with its many interpretations. Obviously I check what he is exposed to but he has only just started using the internet and he knows what he is allowed to use it for and not to wander into dodgy areas there. But actual news, no matter how disturbing, is part of life. Take for an example the worst news which could have ever been broadcast, the discovery of the nazi concentration camps and what was happening there. It was also happening to children and if some of those children managed to survive what they had endured then surely another child should learn from that and not be protected from it, but obviously with a mature adult on hand to explain the circumstances in detail.
Thank you for the kind remarks about my son, his remarkable intelligence is recognised by all in our area and he is a much adored child.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Nothing at all to forgive my dear friend, your view was welcome and would probably be the one which would concern most parents, rather than my own interpretation. As I just commented to the first responder though I believe that there are far more worthy people whose deaths should be commented on much more and would benefit many with extensive coverage. Unfortunately these now pass as just a footnote in history.

6. Philbo (428) | 5 months ago | The news is more than just news or maybe less depends on your point of view. It has the power to shape how people think about things. It is an incredibly powerful marketing tool if you can harness it. I think Michael Jackson may make more money dead than he did alive. On the bright side he may be really into this music right now but he'll likely get tired of it after awhile.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Philbo, I could understand the media being manipulated into becoming a marketing tool for a dead popstar in America, as celebrity there has more day to day coverage in the media. I am completely suprised though that it was even mentioned more than once on Greek news, but actually has virtually taken it over to the disgust of many Greeks who are sick to death of it all and probably had little notion of who he even was. It raises the question perhaps of who is manipulating the Greek press into this lunacy. Advertisers perhaps?

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Aunty, my son has been following the news because it has overtaken the news and he realises what a waste of time it all is as he reports with increduality yet another development. His usual is 'they're stll going on about it on the news and he's still dead'. There is no chance of my son making a hero of out of him and searching the video was just fun to annoy mummy. It has raised plenty of questions though which we've been able to discuss, how to budget, why one person can dominate the news by just singing, how not to live in a fairy land, etc.

ANTIQUELADY (11534) | 5 months ago | I know your son is a smart young man. I think it's important for kids to be interested in the news, more of them need to be. I think u are very smart to encourage him to keep up w/what is going on in the world. I just didn't want him to think mj was a hero because in my opinion he is not in any way.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Aunty, he might still have his cartoon heroes on his ten year old side but i think he's bright enough to see through celebrity and pick heroes worth having. Ok I've just asked him right now for 3 people he admires; he came out with Mummy. Alexander the Great from Macedonia, and Jackie Chan.

thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi mladenovicvuk, so you also disagree presumabley then with the mass media coverage of a basic non story of little news importance. I remember hearing of the death of Elvis via Radio Luxembourg but in no way remember the media then talking about nothing else for the next month, there was still real news to be reported on then.

9. Iriene88 (1186) | 5 months ago | Dear Thea,
It is the same here in this part of the world. My son heard of MJ but nothing much about him besides the knowledge that he is a singer, which later get fairer skin and had done plastic surgery. But since June 25th 2009, everyday, everywhere - TV news, Yahoo News, blogs, e-mails, radio all about MJ. Out of sudden he is busy searching about MJ in the net, putting MJ videos on his blog, watching MJ concert on Saturday night since the TV channel still dedicate MJ month even now already in end of August! In the whole month of June & July almost all the channels in the radio playing MJ songs everyday!
MJ 'moon walk', MJ songs titles...then he would say 'I never knew this song is MJ song!, then he read newspaper recently on the report of MJ overdose..so on and so forth!
You know my son like about theme park, now he is wondering how big is MJ 'NeverLand' theme park...
All the best and take care!
| |
| |
|
|
thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | Hi Iriene, your son seems to have got it bad, in my own sons case he just can't believe that this one event can drag on so endlessly and the video was only found to expressely annoy me, not because he wants to emulate him. But even in Malayasia now it has taken over the media, I would rather see a news report from Malaysia which of course will never happen unless you were to suffer a large national disaster. Such nonsense coverage and obsession leads to less real news being reported. Please explain to your son the wastage of money over this neverland theme park and how bad budgetary practices would surely have lead to its forced selling to cover the debts. Thea

10. psycospaz (199) | 5 months ago | There are many problems with the Media, however most of them stem from us, the viewers. News shows are just like any other TV show and need ratings, so they have reformatted their shows and what they air to get people to watch, and I guess it is working. Even though so many people say it that they are sick about hearing about MJ or the Obamams they still watch, which still drives up ratings, which tells the news people "they must like it, let's air some more."
I have some friends that are in visual media and they hate what it has become. Spoon (my best friend in the whole world.) is attempting to become a movie producer and even has a few scripts written, but main stream Hollywood won't even look at him, because his stuff doesn't fit into the new "Hollywood" look. I guess because his scripts aren't either all hippy lovey or over the top gruesome like SAW.
Great topic though.:D Happy Mylotting!

|
|
thea09 (4760) | 5 months ago | hi psycospaz, the point you make is something I really hadn't considered that much, that the news is now goverened by ratings so obviously then it dumbs down to mass market appeal. It has always been that way with newspapers but I always think of the news as more of a 'public service broadcast.' In the UK the BBC represented the government line so was always to be taken with a pinch of salt, but at least it funded other new options for the more serious minded, such as the excellent 'Newsnight'. Together with Channel 4 news we could appreciate investigative journalism rather than the headline facts with no depth. But as you are now depicting a ratings war over news coverage then without doubt the nonsense celebrity culture will come to dominate the news out of all proportion.

psycospaz (199) | 5 months ago | I really started noticing it when the morning shows changed their formats to more of a talk show, happy go lucky feel. And that is when I quit watching the news. Fox and ABC is the worse for those types, I think. But if that is what the masses want, that is what the masses get.
