Dress codes and uniforms in schools |
|
Hello:) When I was in school years ago, we had a "dress code" but did not wear uniforms. There are some debates today about dress codes and uniforms...some believe it robs a student of their individuality, while others feel that it puts students on equal ground and helps prevent "labeling" of some as odd, poor, etc.
Do the students in your area have a special dress code or do they wear uniforms? Or are they allowed to dress however they wish? What do you think is best, and why?

When I was in school, I did wear uniform. My mom said sometimes it's better with uniform, so it don't give a headache on what to wear every morning. My daughter only 8 and 6 yrs old, and a lot of times we kind of argue of what she going to wear the next day...LOL...which is won't happen if they have uniform.

2. lologirl2021 (1629) | 4 months ago | Well in my area where i live there are pubic schools, magnet schools, charter schools and private schools. The charter and private schools all have a uniform they have to wear from school that they had to buy from the school. All other schools that are in the county must wear a collard t-shirt tucked in with a belt. This dress code is kind hard for some kids but they let a few slip buy hear and there. Some of the high schools around town only allow collard shirts of certain colors which is kinda ridiculous but i guess its better that way for that school. NO schools allows flip flops and you must not wear them ever you must have a shoe not look like a flip flop to wear it to school. Dress codes can be good and can be bad.

3. pinklemonade (366) | 4 months ago | In my country all schools wear uniform and I am glad. Our uniforms were horrible, expensive and uncomfortable but I have a feeling bullying would be a lot worse than it is now if no uniforms were present. School is already divided up into groups of people and if students were able to express themselves as an individual even more I am sure it would come even more extreme. I suffered from bullying throughout school with our uniforms on, I used to hate the days where for some occasion we got to wear our own clothes. It was horrible as everyone judged you on what you wore. Weirdly enough, I wear my own clothes to university and did at college too. I think it is more appropriate when you have left school as you tend to leave that kind of childishness behind.

7. CORDALE (367) | 4 months ago | Hello karen I live in alabama and yes this year we went to uniforms. It was a pain in the butt to have to buy 5 sets of uniforms for all 4 of my kids but now that this is over with I think this is a great idea. The uniform policy has put a end to our boys walking around with their pants hanging down showing off the behind and although it hasnt stopped this completely it is has decreased it significantly. also I have noticed my sons taking pride in making sure they are within the school code with much more serious precautions. So I do think that uniforms are the way to go and for the parents of large families like myself we dont have to worry about kids being teased because they dont have the namebrand clothes. Everything is now basic. Thanks!

8. wolfie34 (13865) | 4 months ago | In my opinion a uniform is far preferable, we had a dress code at our school and had to wear all the right clothes, failure to do this meant we were either sent home or letters to our parents warning us about the rules of wearing the correct clothes, and jewellery too, boys weren't even allowed to wear earings, that's how far I go back! I do believe this is for the greater good, because if you were able to wear your own clothes there would be added bullying for families who were not able to dress their children in the latest fashion or with designer labels and tags would be subject to bullying and called names. Bullying was bad enough at me school, believe me I was the subject of it, I think if we didn't have uniform then I would have got bullied even more, as my family were not rich, far from it. It also distinguishes the school by the uniform so if there is any trouble outside school it reflects badly on the school and the perpetrators can easily be named and shamed by the uniform they are wearing, so it teaches them that their behaviour is not only monitored in school but outside too. I do hope they never decide to do away with uniforms especially in this day and age where designer labels are a must and sadly bullying goes on.

9. lwelizabeth (159) | 4 months ago | Lately, it seems that more and more schools in my area are enforcing uniforms. When I was growing up, there was no dress code until I got to middle school. (I'm not sure if that was distrcit-wide or schoolwide though.) When I got to high school, I actually attended a school for two years, one of which enforced a dress code. After that I left and went to another high school which had no uniform requirement although it did have a dress code. Honestly, my best memories from high school, or any years of schooling for that matter, were from that one year I was required to wear a uniform to school. I don't know if it prevents the 'labeling' so to speak, but it does seem to have had an affect on the majority of the students academically speaking. It seems that students were able to focus better without the distraction of another students loud t-shirt of outfit, if that makes sense. And no one could get made fun of for their outfit because everyone else was wearing pretty much the same thing, though there were slight variations (mainly one of four different colors were allowed.)
(Wow, this is quite long..apologies for those who don't like to read that much!)

| 10. zareenalot (63) | 4 months ago | Hi,Well talking about uniforms and dress codes in schools i think its necessary to maintain unity among all. There is nothing that by having uniforms students will lost their individuality.By having these rules students can be controlled in certain limits. In our country every school has uniforms and some colleges also have some dress codes as per their rules. So,i prefer these dress codes in all schools. And anyhow one day in a week is allowed to wear normal dress in some of the schools. If they want they can dress up as they like but according to dress code rules.
