Handwritten on binder paper, stuffed, addressed, and snail mailed, a fond memor? | | I remember when I was a kid and members of my extended family such as my uncles or grandparents would send me a letter, my mother would always make me hand write a thank you note and post it to the giver of the gift that very same day. I used to love to receive handwritten letters from pen pals, boyfriends, friends who moved away or went abroad, etc. I cannot remember when the last time I received a hand written and hand addressed letter from an individual. I can still remember the feeling that just seeing the familiear penmanship used to give me, a fluttery kind of flattered feeling. That someone would take the time to sit down and put pen to paper to write to me was very flattering and very personal. I miss that, the feeling, opening the letter (getting a papercut)and settling into a nice comfortable chair to read my personal letter.
Like I said it was so one on one, so intimate, and so nice. Is snail mailing a letter a thing of the past, one of those old fashioned things that people refer to as fond memories, or which our children will never get to enjoy? I fear that this is so as e-mali dominates the interpersonal communication front and all of my mail now has preprinted return addresses, my name and address printed by a printer, and normakly a return envelope. Never any unique mail intended just for me, without the need to read some advertisement or biling statement. So tell me, is the handwritten, snail mail letter, SWAK ed, and sometimes even perfumed, truly a thing of the past? is that unique feeling as dead as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin?

I used to send and receive snail mail all the time back in the day. My uncle in the airforce would write occasionally, along with friends who either moved away or were on a trip out of town. When my grandfather used to go out of town in the winters, I would always receive mail from him, handwritten letters (I know that killed his arthritis) often came solo or with gifts in order to make up for my missing him at Christmas time. I cannot remember the last time I received a handwritten letter in the mailbox on my porch.

sharone74 (2229) | 4 months ago | Good to see you stil in "La hiza" VI. Wasn't that feeling when you got a piece of personal mail, ust wonderful? Now sometimes I get post cards or hand addressed enveloopes with preprinted marketing materials inside. I tend to open these uch more often than those that are computer printed on the exterior. I feel like if someone went to the effort to hand address it maybe it is worth my while to read it and find out what they're promoting. No letters from mom or relatives anymore just marketers.
For Zoey. That's kinda sad. No contact from friends or family even at the holidays. That is sad.
Though I am sure in less developed, less wired in countries they still send and receive snail mail, I think in developed countries snail mail is going the way of the dod do. Extinct.

It is sad to think of it, but it does seem like snail mail is a thing of the past. The last time I sent a letter was because I was going out of range of the Internet on an archaeological dig, and I wanted so badly to stay in touch with some on-line friends that I asked for their addresses. When I got back home we still sent a few letters, but because e-mail was so much faster (they lived in other countries) we ended up reverting back to it which was sad because I did get a buzz from sending letters to them and getting some back. I still have their addresses and do get the addresses of newer friends so that if the Internet were to vanish for whatever reason I could snail mail them instead so we wouldn't lose touch.
It would be nice in the future to find someone I could exchange snail mail with but I honestly don't see that happening with the Internet still around, sadly. It is just too damn efficient lol
All the best, Dranz

sharone74 (2229) | 4 months ago | I am deluged with email and email boxes that it would prob ably get my attention faster and with a 99.98% delivery rate as long as it is properly addressed I would get it, sometimes faster than sifting through my emails to find the oe personal email amongst all the spam. Even my mother, the origional non digital kid sends me emails now. It is just by happenstance and her email address that I find them in the flood of emails that I get to my primary email box. I get tremendous amounts of SPAM to that box because I have had it over 10 years and Yahoo just loves to SPAM it's users out for money.

| | 3. mzz663 (1039) | 4 months ago | Wow, what a thought! I remember those days! Going to the mailbox and getting something with your name on it was special, even as a kid, if it was just highlights magazine or a weekly reader during the summer when I could go get the mail. I think maybe I'll start doing that again, writing letters to my nieces and nephews and grandbaby (she's only two, I might wait a couple years) but it is exciting as a kid. I always let my kids check the mail around their birthday, they always were excited to get birthday cards in the mail. Doing this might even save a couple of jobs, I've heard that they were thinking about closing a few post offices because of the slow down of mail. Stamps aren't all that expensive. I used to type a lot of letters and I don't see a big difference if I print a letter out on the printer from the computer, as long as it's personal. thanks!

mzz663 (1039) | 4 months ago | Me, too! I still have letters from my Great Grandma, she lived four hours away and told me she loved getting letters from me. My Grandma sent me letters I still have and I'm glad I did, she is still living but can't write too well anymore. I always loved both of their handwritting.

| | 4. DiamondDogs (373) | 4 months ago | It is a bit of a pity to lose personal touches like letter writing. Even emails seem to be getting too time consuming these days. I still send and receive cards, and I usually write a few lines to go with them. There's only one person I know of who still writes letters these days, most people wouldn't even know that many.

I think the post office is really feeling the pinch with more ppl turning to the internet...I do think though that you have more privacy with the snail mail then with internet...after all you never know who is watching you online.
