Do you find subtitles to movies distracting? |
| |
| Understandably subtitles are necessary when the movie you're watching is not in the language you're familiar with. But it can be quite irritating if you can understand the language. In my country where there are multiple major languages, the English movies always have subtitles. It's quite distracting and you just can't help but read the subtitles and this really interrupt the flow of the movie. What do you all think? | | | | | |

| | Hi homeshoppers, Yeah sometimes it's better to just dub the movie into English like they do for some anime tv shows. | | | |

| | They are distracting if you can understand the language as you eye can't help but look and read them. Occasionally, the subtitles slightly differ from the actual words, only maybe one word has changed, but when you have heard and understood to see it written slightly different on the subtitles can be very irritating as you momentarily forget the scene. | | | | | | |

| | Hello sunnysmiles, I know what you mean. Sometimes the subtitles have different meanings from what the characters are saying. At times it can be quite funny and you feel that you can do a better job of translating eh? | | | |

| | I don't mind. I like reading subtitle, but it become unbearable when there are three subtitle at the same time. But I get used to it already, so I'm ok now. Happy Mylotting | | | | | | |

| | I don't find subtitle that much of a bother. On those English movies that I have watched and had the subtitles on for various reasons I haven't found them distracting. Plus on those movies which are in a foreign language I usually find that I can understand what is happening by watching the movie and only occassionaly reading the sub titles. Personally for me if I am watching a movie which requires me to really study the subtitles then the chances are the movie is not that great as it should be able to visually tell the story rather than rely purely on dialogue. | | | | | | |

| | I know what you mean. Since movies are visual, film producers should take advantage of that to present the story. | | | |

| | I like subtitles. Especially if the actor has poor speech delivery and you can't understand a word he says, which seems to be more and more often. Most of the movies I watch have a lot of critical dialogue, so it's necessary to know what the conversation is. | | | | | | |

| | Yes some actors like Marlon Brando slurred his words and subtitles do help. I sometimes watch DVDs with the subtitle on so I can really understand what the characters are saying. | | | |

| | I'd actually prefer subtitles than a direct audio translation. There always something about listening to a foreign language in its original incarnation; it's just me maybe. | | | | | | |

| | No it's not just you. My daughter prefers to watch Anime with the original Japanese audio and read the subtitles. But she's now quite proficient in Japanese through the animes that she watched. She taught herself Japanese so she can watch animes without the dubbing and without having to read the subtitles. | | | |

| | Definitely yws, because my brain tends to automatically reads printed words. This is not that distracting but for the fact that most subtitles tend to be inaccurate, or displayed at the wrong moment. So what the eyes see and hear are not synchronised. This takes away the concentration and enjoyment of watching a movie. Ideally they should produce televisions and decoders with the ability to filter out subtitles whenever we want to watch movies without any distraction. | | | | | | |

| | Yes the problem with our brain is we tend to want to read when there's some written word in front of us that we can understand. And when we read we can't actually concentrate on the action on screen. That really takes away the enjoyment of watching the movie. | | | |

| | No, I like to watch foriegn movies with subtitles. I enjoy them. I just think that some of the films that come from a different country usually have a little different spin to them, a different style. The part about that I don't like about subtitles is when the beginning and end of the sentences of what the characters are saying are cut off. I got to make sense of what's going on more. And the other negative thing about subs would be when the sentence is super long and only shows on the screen for a few seconds. Makes me wonder are they really saying all that, or they just talking super fast? Anyhoo, happy mylotting!! | | | | | | |

| | Yes when watching foreign movies, subtitles are essential. It's when you're watching a movie where you understand the characters' language that make the subtitles so irritatingly intrusive as you can't help but read the subtitles at the expense of watching the movie. | | | |

| | Sure the subtitles can be a little distracting but I personally love watching foreign films because every different country has their own style of filming. There are a lot of great movies that are in languages I am not fluent in and they are still some of my favorites. For example I'm a Cyborg, but it's okay and Pan's Labyrinth. | | | | | | |

| | for me i couldn't manage without them, i'm not deaf but do struggle to hear, and keeping up with whats being said is very hard work. If i didn't have the sub titles i'd miss so much it wouldn't be worth watching. I don't bother even trying to watch a movie if it's without subtitles. You learn not to let them interfere too much with the viewing, for me they are back up. | | | | | | |
