Using algebra in your everyday life |
|
I have a question about an algebra problem. It's an easy problem to solve in your head without setting up an algebraic expression, but how do you write the equation for it and solve it algebraically? I can do it in my head, but not sure how to present it on paper.
Here's the problem:
Mary goes to the store to buy a gallon of milk, and a box of cereal. She only has $5 to spend. She doesn't have enough money to buy a bunch of bananas, so she will buy individual bananas. How many bananas can she buy?
I don't know how to set up the equation to solve it... can someone please show the equation and work it out?
Also, I want to ask:
Do you use Algebra in your everyday life?
Do you find algebra hard or easy?
What resources do you use to get algebra help if you need it?

3. gitfiddleplayer (5077) | 4 months ago | Ugh, math, and mental math at that. I'm not sure how to write the equation, sorry. I don't use math in my everyday life, especially not Algebra. If I did have to use math that required formulas I would have them already programed into my computer so I could just plug in the numbers and let it tell me what the answer is.

4. BCMike (3316) | 4 months ago | Algebra is easily the biggest irritant to me in school. I don't understand it and God knows I have tried.
There is nothing for my brain to grab.
Trig is triangles. I understand triangles. I can see them in my head. Algebra is nothing.
And I fell off the algebra bus in grade 8 when I could not answer the question; "A+B=5"
I went 1+4, 4+1, 2+3, 3+2...decimals, fractions and was still marked wrong. I have never recovered from that blow.
I have looked for help in every corner and still nothing makes sense. I gave up.

5. Quiplet (164) | 4 months ago | I have not a clue. Math is not my strong suit. But I do know that performing algebra in my head is much easier than a written formula. Of course, you don't get credit for what's in your head.

OreoCookie3 (18264) | 4 months ago | Yes, the answer is 2 bananas... but showing the calculations in algebraic language is the problem I am having. I will wait for SIL to get home to do it for me... he is a whiz. He's at work right now.

7. hotsummer (2685) | 4 months ago | i am not good at equation actually. but i find it hard to imagine how those mathematicians were able to discover those formula that brings the right calculations just to every thing and that is why we are able to build buildings. those old scholars formulated such good math or formula like every thing has its way to find the answer to every math problems. like every thing involves in numbers. algebra makes us see the world in new perspective.
before i tried to calculate math by my mind without expressing or putting it in equation but we have to make an equation for it. math is like a language. sometimes i know what to say but i just can put in words in english cause i am not that fluent in english though i know almost every word in english but to put them in right construction of words are too hard for me many times. and so the same way in math i know how to calculate in my thoughs but to put it in paper is just too difficult for me.

10. learn2earn (10535) | 4 months ago | I don't use algebra because it's complicated for me. I use basic mathematics to solve the basic problems and questions in life. Example would be, what I be the formula for a successful saving of money? I use the expression: Income - Savings= Expenses. Algebra teachers will recommend this formula: Income - Expenses= savings. This doesn't work often. I hope that the other responders have given you the right answers to your questions.
