Associated Press Photo of Fatally Wounded Marine Stirs Controversy |
|
The Associated Press comes under fire by Defense Secretary Robert Gates for the AP printing a photo of two Marines coming to the aid of a fellow 21 year old Marine who paid the ultimate price for a people's freedom when he later died of his injuries.
In a letter to Associated Press President and CEO Thomas Curley, Gates said he was asking the AP to reconsider its decision to distribute the photo "in the strongest of terms" and called the decision "appalling" and lacking in "common decency."

Yes...how DARE the Associated Press publish a photo depicting the real life horrors of WAR, and showing that people, OUR people, do in fact get killed in foreign countries?
How DARE the AP publish a photo showing the attempt of fellow Marines to get their mortally wounded comrade to safety?
Yes, the AP should be ASHAMED of themselves for telling and showing it like it is.
They should only show the goodness that comes from WAR...
WAKE UP AMERICA.
Why are people mad at a news agency for depicting the truth?
Yes, an American soldier died...but this is NOT a picture of his dead blasted-to-pieces body...it is a photo of what happens when there is a WAR, and of people trying to save their friend...
Do you think the AP should have withheld this photo from publication?
If so, why?
Do you think the AP was right in distributing this photo?
Why?

dvmurphy (210) | 4 months ago | The associated press is more concerned about sensationlism than respecting the wishes of the fallen marine's family. Their son is DEAD and they do not want his image staring back at them in the media in their grief. Images of their mortally wounded son are horrible for them to see.

2. thea09 (4322) | 4 months ago | Hi lamby, the true pictures of war should always be shown and if people are squeamish about seeing them then they aren't obliged to. I always take the view that as even children are casulaties of war we should not keep these images hidden from our own children so that they can better understand what is happening in the world. Unfortuntely images like that don't support celebrity which is the world most of the media seem to inhabit these days rather than reporting real news.

Why so many people live in a dream world fostered by the media and politicians is beyond me. At least I am one of the few people who prefer the truth not being gullible like so many idiots.

5. Strongheart (1079) | 4 months ago | I followed your link and the links that led from it and never saw the photo in question but have a good idea about it from the descriptions given in the articles. I don't believe the AP did anything wrong. As the reporter said, she was showing people what happens and how people tried to save him. To me, I see no difference between this and showing a car crash victim being loaded in an ambulance as far as content is concerned. It does pull at my heart strings though to know that another vet has fallen cause these kids are my heros!

Taskr36 (4580) | 4 months ago | The difference is simple. With a victim going into an ambulance they are reporting the news for the sake of reporting. In this instance however, they are showing these photos for shock value and controversy. They are openly opposing the wishes of this man's family because it adds to their publicity. They are using this man and his family as pawns in their game of publicity.

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2716) | 4 months ago |
The photo was going to be published regardless of what his family wished. They didn't contact the family to ask permission, but simply to show the family what was going to be published. Are you only opposing it because his family did, or are you opposed to it on different grounds? Should all the family members of people that die in an airplane/jet airliner crash be polled as to whether images of the crash should be published?
It is a real life photo of an unfortunate real life situation.
It is a WAR that is being reported on...it is not "news for the sake of reporting" as you state it.
In my opinion, all the people saying it shouldn't have been published are the ones using this man as a pawn in a game...

sndcain36 (2651) | 4 months ago | I'm sure Cindy Sheehan would have had no problem letting publishing a picture of her wounded and dying son.
For me, it's about the family; The AP could have taken the high road and they could have respected the family's wishes. I have no problem with the photo being published- war is what it is--but out of respect for the family the AP shouldn't have published it.
Those who want to "show the horrors of war" with this picture are ignoring the fact that someone's son died; someone who doesn't want to just be remembered as a body on a battlefield but someone who lived, and loved and served his country and deserves to be remembered for more than that one moment in his life.
It's about respecting those who serve and their families. That's more important to me than showing the horrors of war.

Strongheart (1079) | 3 months ago | Having read yet another version of the story and seeing the photo, I feel the AP SHOULD have respected the parents wishes. I was not aware when I first commented that his father did not want the photo released. The news should always respect the wishes of the family. My heart goes out to this young man's family and my prayers are with him.

6. p1kef1sh (5635) | 4 months ago | I believe that it should be law that a picture of EVERY dead soldier is published in the state in which s/he is found by their colleagues. Maybe then, the a$$holes that think that sending troops to fight a war that they can never win, in a country that most cannot find on the map let alone understand why they are there, might just think again.

Taskr36 (4580) | 4 months ago | So you don't want a free press. You just want a press that supports your agenda and that's all. You don't care about or respect this man or his family.

7. Taskr36 (4580) | 4 months ago | Of course! Rather than honoring the dead and respecting the wishes of their family, we MUST use the deaths of men and women who serve this country for propaganda and profit. That's far more important than having a freaking soul.
A lot of people have died in this war. Many of them have families who would not have objected to such a thing. Have you even wondered why did the AP feel the need to use THIS soldier and his death for publicity and propaganda instead of another? The answer is so obvious I'm amazed you don't see it. They WANTED this controversy. They wanted people to object and they wanted people to insist it was necessary. They don't care about you. They don't care about the soldiers. They don't even care about showing the cost of war. They just care about headlines and publicity.

The_Lamb_Lies_Down (2716) | 4 months ago | You do realise there is no photo of his dead body, correct?
That it is a photo of two of his comrades going to him to help him.
Would you still be objecting if he hadn't later died?
You seem to know an awful lot about the reason this photo was published.
Do you perhaps works for them?
Or are you just stating your opinion?
My opinion seems to differ from yours...I see this as a photo of two people going to help a friend...you see it as exploiting death...two sides of the same coin...it is all in how you perceive it...

p1kef1sh (5635) | 4 months ago | Taskr - you made a comment about me not wanting a free press. That's exactly what I want. A press free to publish this kind of photograph to remind those of us sat at home enjoying our lives, that due to the incompetent morons that lead our countries young men and women are dying in places far from home. Of course AP want this controversy, it sells newspapers. I don't want to glorify battle death, I want it to stop. I also believe with all my heart that these brave people should be honoured. But the cause is not a good one. Bush/Blair have made too many wives widows and mothers minus a son. Sorry that you don't feel that way.

8. Polly1 (8463) | 4 months ago | When I first read your title, I thought to myself oh no. but my feelings was coming from a moms point of view, seeing her childs dead body on the news. But then I read your discussion and your point of view, you are totally right in my opinion. We as a society do need to see what happens in "War", its also good for us to see fellow soldiers trying to save their friends. We can sit here in the comfort of our homes, on our computers, we have no idea what is going on over seas, we don't know what it is like. Some people do know what is going on, they have been there. Too much of our news is sugar coated, the "real" news would be too upsetting and disturbing. Maybe it should be, it is true that the news does seem to be all bad. The news media can also show the "good" news too, there is plenty of that.

9. ZephyrSun (3492) | 4 months ago | This one I'm sorta torn on, I think that the warmongers would really see what happens in a war but, I also feel badly for the families of the men and women killed during war. Maybe if the press got permission from the family of the soldier than that would be better. It's just an issue with no simple answer.
And by the way, what are you doing in politics? LOL
