My 16 year old son lifted weights and his elbow has been so sore he is using Tylenol for it. He usually hangs tough, so I know if he is taking Tylenol for something he must be really hurting. Any suggestions for him?

It sounds like some sort of Tendonitis. I've had the same thing in my Shoulder for months and the pain is horrendous at times. The best thing to do is to get it checked out and a doctor will probably prescribe some sort of anti inflammatory medication. This isn't always effective though and I've found the best thing for that sort of pain is a heat wrap or a TENS machine.

He rested for a couple of days and today it is better. I think he will be more careful from now on.

He may either have the following medial or lateral epicondylitis, bursitis or tendonitis and it could be tunnel syndromes. this would depend on the actual location of the pain. Does he have difficulty gripping objects? Is there discomfort around the elbow? Best suggestion of course is to see an orthopedic doctor. For the interim, he may rest the elbow but not too much as the elbow might get too immobilized. He may also apply ice therapy as i would assume that he has had this for more the 2 days. He can opt for physical therapy, or steroid injections. I would highly advise he sees an orthopedic doctor to pinpoint the accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks for your advice. We are giving it some time and if it gets worse or doesn't improve in a couple more days I will make him see a doctor.

Tylenol isn't the best for that kind of injury. If it's possible to take ibuprofen it's a better anti-inflamatory. Naproxen is good too.. but either one can be very tough on your body. The naproxen is the most dangerous. But tylenol is pretty well useless for sports types of injuries. I would give it a couple of days and no more before I take him to the doctor. It's not worth letting it go as it could have longer results if you don't take care of it properly.
