Why Did Parents-&-Administrators Boycott the White House's Back-2-School Speech? | | The White House released a preview of a speech that President Barack Obama will broadcast from one school-as$embly to many schools nationwide ... the broadcast is 'available' to ALL American schools, but many-many parents registered complaints and urged some districts to boycott the broadcast.
Why? I think it's because--in the White House-released outline--President Obama informs the students that (in so-many words) 'obedience is a choice.' (The actual words were more like 'the future of America depends upon you giving work-and-school your full effort; you will not be successful unless you do.')
President Obama is telling the students that--though they may have to work so hard as to feel like 'mindless automatons'--they DO have minds, and these minds must be constantly-redirected 'from rest to The Task' (i.e. from relaxing fun to the further fulfillment of purpose).
But it's much easier for parents-&-administrators (bosses) if the students' minds are dormant, leaving their bodies (controlled by simple laws like 'do this, and you can eat' or 'go, or suffer the lash') for use as obedient machines.
Why do you think the White House's speech got boycotted?

It started when there was a set of what were essentially rules sent out to some teachers and whatnot, instructing them to make children illustrate how they could "help" President Obama.
This sent up a big flag, mainly because the POTUS is supposed to be helping the people, not the other way around. He is in the employ of those children, being citizens, and they are not beholden to him.
Parents seen this and wondered exactly what he wanted "help" with. Was he going to demonize naysayers of the health care bill? Was he going to advise children to go home and turn off lights, stop flushing the toilet and to urge their parents to purchase a fuel-effecient car? Was he going to preach the value of "community" over the importance of personal responsibility? Was he going to say that joining a union was the best way to find a good job, and that starting a small business wasn't a viable option? Was he going to tell the kids to eat celery and carrots instead of graham crackers and Snickers bars?
These concerns, in my opinion, were legitimate when accompanied by that mandate for students to "help" the President. I don't think people were being very reactionary by wondering what he was up to. After all, this is the President that gives a prime-time press conference every other week to "sell" something to the American people. This is the President that wants to tax people for everything outside of his ideology. This is the guy that will not stop appointing questionable people, with NO vetting process, to prominent positions.
A lot of people are unsure exactly who Obama is or what he is trying to do. They don't trust him. And they don't trust him around their kids.
However, I think the smoke settled once the actual speech was released for viewing and that order to have children write down how they can "help" the President was removed.

mythman (1140) | 4 months ago | So basically, you're saying that the judgement was made 'ad hoc' (or whatever the Latin is for the words meaning 'based on the person who said it and not -on the things that were said'), kind of like Christians are with any 'enemy' (Anglican Hebrew "S-T-N").
The widespread acceptance of that kind of judgement is what makes it scary to say, "Hitler was mostly-right," to people who don't know you're a 'serious comedian' (or -to say that in the mixed company of 'those who know' and 'those who don't know' - the 'Gnostic' and the 'Agnostic' - 'those who agree you're a "serious comedian"' and 'those who say, "Comedy cain't be Serious! What'ur you thinkin`!?!??'")
A lot of the 'feared commands' you're suggesting sound like good things; who is it that DOESN'T want our President to make those suggestions? I agree that the President is in the citizens' employ, but I don't think the children are citizens' yet---I think they're future citizens, yes; but 'slaves to their parents' until then (and maybe even after ... in a way).
Obama is one of their many-many uncles (brothers of their parents) so he is to treat them as you would treat your brother-or-sister's kids---telling them how to live, giving that advice as 'instruction' (Obama IS a college-professor - that's one of the reasons I voted for him!).

matersfish (819) | 4 months ago | I don't know anything about all that.
And I don't think the President demonizing naysayers of the health care bill or preaching the importance of unions or the community over personal responsibility are good things by any stretch of the imagination.

mythman (1140) | 3 months ago | I don't know how President Obama "demonized" anybody, and--as far as "preaching" putting anything above personal responsibility--'personal responsibility' was what he was 'preaching' in the Back-to-School speech ... a-suring that "community" & "unions" would be properly aligned AS things needed to fulfill one's 'personal responsibility.'

One, I was playing devil's advocate, stating some possible reasons that people may have had a problem with it.
Two, now it's hindsight. After seeing and hearing the speech, it's easy to say what he did or did not do. However, before the speech was released, and definitely before he made it, there was only a mysterious set of supposed "rules" given out, basically informing teachers of tasks to give students in preparation and during the speech.
That's what created the controversy, and after the speech proved to be innocent, the controversy stopped.

Good point...but i do think there is a lot more to it too.

mythman (1140) | 4 months ago | The news-story that introduced me to the Back2School-speech actually led with the 'scandal' that the speech-boycotters introduced; I just couldn't see what their problem was.
But an answerer above said it was probably just because it was Obama saying it - that it would open the door for Obama to suggest gross water-conservation and energy-conservation and celery-eating/'candy bar'-abstinence ... I just don't see it.

But this was Obama, so the rabid republoonicans just foamed at the mouth and insisted that it was an attempt to indoctrinate all your children into his socialist plot to take over your country, install a muslim government and have his death panels kill all your grannies.

That's the kind of anarchy that Jesus Christ began. Through His teachings-&-life, He set all humans equal ... "He came not to bring the olive-branch, but the sword; setting son against father, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law," each one only being lesser-or-greater according to his/her actual, ongoing works.
Shameful that people project/'prophecy' others' works based upon their past works rather than -based upon present knowledge of ongoing projects.
