As for Mr. Chips (another answer you got) that is not a short story but a novel. With respect of short novels (quite different as a genre to a short story), for the the very best is Le petit prince (The little prince) by Antoine de Saint Exupery.
I like very much the short stories by Katherine Mansfiesld too.
