Do cats eat their prey after playing? |
|
I haven't had a cat for many years now, and he never bought any catches into the house. However, this morning, in the house we are minding, the cat was playing wjth what looked like a field mouse in the kitchen. As I had let it out earlier; it obviously brought its catch in through the cat door. Now, two minutes later, the cat is here, but there's no sigh of the mouse. Would the cat have eaten it? Or can I expect to find it elsewhere? Dread the thought!

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | The cat actually was eating some dry food from her bowl, but there was no sign of the mouse. I hope it isn't dying somewhere. I'd better take a look. Thanks for the response.

3. devideddi (438) | 3 months ago | My guess is that the cat just swatted it somewhere, maybe under something or around a corner shelve. Its probably still there somewhere. Even if she did eat it, she would have left something, tail or pieces. My cat used to catch stuff and bring it to me. My neighbor told me thats what cats do for their owners, kinda like a gift. Or is it possible that the mouse was still alive enough and took off? I have had that happen also.

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | I had a look for remains, and couldn't see any, but I know how crafty cats are, so I'd better have a thorough search. Thanks for the advice.

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | I just saw the cat playing with the mouse, and about a minute or two later it was gone, and the cat was purring contentidly, and the mouse was no where to be seen. I searched everywhere but no mouse. I just hope ir's not my nose that leads to it later.

5. LittleMel (6484) | 3 months ago | I don't think the cat eats it. It might have been stuck somewhere or escaped. I saw a small mouse once my cat played with it out of curiosity. wild cats I imagine will eat anything but indoor would be more selective because they know food is always available from us anyway.

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | I sure hope it escaped, because no matter how small the small in terrible. I can't see where it could have hidden a mouse, so I hope ot escaped outside.

6. anne25penn (802) | 3 months ago | Most of the time cats only play with their pray. I dread opening my back door every morning because of the "gifts" my cats leave on the doormat. It would be mic, birds or insects. Insects I don't mind. But imagine a dead mouse with its innards and head all over my doormat. It ruins my breakfast really. But cats are cats. I wish you luck and hope you find the remains of your cats' toy.

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | Hi anne, I have searched our house, and my wife is exceptionally clean, so I hope the "present" got away, and does not reappear. Thanks for the 'not so pleasent thoughts'.

7. deathspectacular (772) | 3 months ago | Oh yeah, they'll eat it. Or he may have left it somewhere for you as a present. If he does that, don't get mad at him. He's trying to feed you, and it's a good thing.

mipen2006 (2424) | 3 months ago | Hey deathspectacular, it may be a good thing, but it won't smell the best. I wonder why he would hide it if it's a present? Thanks for the response.

deathspectacular (772) | 3 months ago | They don't really think of it as hiding it. Just as putting it away.
