Hi all.
I have a nervous dog and she's 1/2 lab and 1/2??? but we are making a trip and she gets all nervous and slobbers and breathes heavy.
I have a wonderful friend on mylot, antiquelady who gives her dog beneadryl for itchy skin.
I think i've had a vet tell me to give a benadryl to dogs who need to calm down.
Does anybody have any suggestions???

I sure do!! I'd get this product called "Calm Down!" for dogs from Petsmart however, I've used the one for cats but not for any of my dogs for I didn't need to..... yet. It works wonderful on my cats so I can only imagine it would work wonderful for dogs too. It doesn't taste too good though but it does the trick! What I do is, I give my cats the recommended dose and then rinse out the needle-less syringe and fill it with water and give it to them to help wash it down and get rid of the nasty taste. You may want to try a lower dose at first to see how your dog will react because all of our systems are different and she might get too much for her system with the recommended dose. Good luck on your trip!!

WOW, thanks for that advice on calm down!!
I did get the vet to give me some "ace" for her today but will get to Pet Smart and order that calm down right away!!
I have syringes all over the place. We used to have a farm and have all kinds and sizes here.
I usually give pills with some cheese or if a liquid with a syringe like you say!
Geez, didn't know they had such!!YOu are so great to let me know this!

I didn't know about it either till we were about to move from Texas to Arkansas and had to get all our pets up to date on their vaccines. I asked the vet on what to do and that's when he told me about "Calm Down" one for cats and another for dogs. He had his own store next to his vet office so I got it there. My poor cats mouths would foam up like crazy so that's when I got water to help them rinse it down. Good luck sweetie!! Glad to be of help!

For most people and animals, benadryl makes them sleepy. There is that rare soul, however, who gets wound up from benadryl instead. I would give it a try a week or so in advance. Also ask your vet. Mine does not want my cats on benadryl, even though I read online that it was okay for the itchy skin.

Thanks!
Talked to my vet today and he said benadryl is ok as an anti histamine but like you say, he said you never know how an animal is going to respond individually.

BUT, he also said the same thing about the pills he gave my dog today!

another mylotter gave me some advice on a product she uses and that is something called, CALM DOWN found on PET SMART. And thank you catsanddogs for that advice!

By the by, I personally do not think I'd want my cats on benadryl, so look up PET SMART for the same calm dog, but think it's called calm cat.
I am really not sure as I have not had time to look it up YET.
I am getting to it!!
But, thanks for responding!

Hi Quita, i don't know if i told u this or not but casey's groomer told me about the benadryl & said it would not hurt them. hope your dog makes the trip well.

myLot reputation of 96/100. quita88 (360)   ranked 41 out of 2,259 in animals  4 months ago

You told me about the benadryl but not that your groomer gave you that advice.
I went to the vet yesterday and he too said benadryl was ok but couldn't guarantee what the effects would be.

He said the same thing about the pills he gave me LOL
So, I have pills.

Another mylotter, dogs and cats gave me the name of a product called calm dog that can be bought thru Pet Smart.
I guess I'm going to experiment today with the pills cuz I have to go to town and for one stop only and see how 1 pill works and go from there.
Thanks for the advice:)

My cats are very nervous when we take them anywhere, they freak out. I usually close down the back portion of the car and ride there with them. Once they are in the car and i'm next to them, i can open a carrier and let them out. They normally sit in the carrier anyway, but knowing that they can get out whenever they want helps them. I also use one huge carrier and put all three of them together, they are brothers and love each other, they freak out more if they don't know when the other brothers are and start meowing so they can hear each other and know that they are close and safe. I don't give them any medications to calm them down, we had bad experience in the past, when Baron got medication from the vet and got very sick from it, we refuse to give them anything now and just try to give them emotional support in this situations. They are nervous when i ride with them and carrier is opened, but not as much when they don't see me and are locked up.

Start taking her with you when ya go get her use to the truck.
Our dogs traveled real good never a word from them but they did like to jump out when we stoped.

I can get her in there if I am in there, but how do I close the door behind her?
She jumps out!!
I'm teaching her to STAY and it works sometimes!!
But, we're working on it.
