Elton John wishes to adopt a baby boy..... Yes or no?   

According to Ukrainian adoption laws, an adopting parent canot be more than 45 years older than the child up for adoption. Seeing as Elton John is 62, he's way outside of this rule on the age front. There's no question that Elton John and his partner would be in a very strong position to take care of this little boy exceptionally well, but I can also understand how the authorities don't wish to bend the rules.

I didn't realize Elton was that age, but still think the same. I understand the aspect of the Ukraine law and what it recognizes, maybe they should've thought about all that before applying to adopt the child. Why not adopt a British baby anyway? Maybe these stars are just used to the attention and looking for more!

He does come across as sincere..... It's just a shame that he chose such a late stage of his life to try and go down this path.

This is perfectly logical reasoning on your part if you ask me! I'm not sure of historical cases here, but you'd think that if there WAS a precedent, we'll be hearing about it very soon.

So far it appears the answer is no, but I'm sure Elton John will have people looking for loopholes and angles to try and make this a reality.

Well...are there any strictly hetero unmarried men of Elton's age that HAVE been awarded an adoption? Good point lamb, but even that would be irrelevant when it's concerning Ukraine law. I agree with Hatley, the child's welfare should be what's important.

Hi Hatley. I'm certainly not a homophobe either and never have been or will be! I agree that Elton John has the money and also the right intentions here, but laws are laws and I can understand if the Ukrainian authorities wish to stick to them. It'll be interesting to see if there are any further developments in this case.

I feel the same Hatley, but whu do these stars have to make it hard. They all seem to want children from developing countries? Why not adopt from home?
Madonna, Angelina Jolie, now Elton, is it really for the children or for their own gratification?

I'm still in two minds about all of this. Yes, I do agree that it's ultimately the welfare of this little boy that matters and Elton John is certainly in the position to love and care for him well; but laws are laws and making exceptions triggers precedents. I can appreciate the authorities wishing to preserve their guidelines and rules when you consider what I've just shared. They may even be concerned that people would see them to have bent these rules BECAUSE of Elton John's celebrity status? I doubt this will be the end of the matter either seeing as there is so much publicity now. Look at Madonna's case. She was rejected, the media stepped in and then after heaps of attention to the case, the decision was reversed. The laws were different in the country she chose to adopt from though. (Malawi I think it was) Let's wait and see!

I can understand that they wouldn't make an exception just because he's rich and famous.

That too, yes. They may feel that to change the rules for him would be seen as favouritism due to his celebrity status. It paves the way for future appeals from people NOT in the same position in life as Elton John as well. As per usual, it's complicated!

Just what age is he? 61 years older than the child, ...doing the math lol ok he's 62 (and 2 months lol) that's not too old IMO. Not as old as the one in dawns discussion.

Yes, I definitely think that in this particular instance, the age factor maybe shouldn't carry as much sway when you consider the wealth Elton John has and his obvious sincerity here; but if a precedent is set, what about future cases? Will they be as favourable? Authorities would always be reluctant to make exceptions and I do understand that. I'm interested to see if this case ends up being taken further.

Hi Karen. At this moment in time, I tend to think along similar lines. At least this appears to be the case on the surface! The age rule especially is nowhere near adhered to and I can understand the Ukrainians not wishing to change the rules in this case. Let's see what happens from here!

If this IS sexual discrimination, then I agree qwith you 100%, but is it? So far it doesn't seem to be that blatant. The age issue and their non-recognition of his marital status are in direct contradiction of their laws. Thanks for pointing out this angle concerning the little boy's brother too. I wasn't aware of this aspect at all!
