What can you say about smokers who are scared of pollution? |
|
I recently rode a public jeepney and there was this person in front of me who was smoking. Though the jeepney didn't have a "No Smoking" sign, it is still a known custom to not smoke inside any public vehicle. Being a non-smoker and knowing the fact that second-hand smokers are at risk too, I then covered my nose with my hankerchief. He noticed what I did but he still didn't throw his cigarette. Instead, he moved a little away from me but still wherever he sits, everyone inside the jeepney could still inhale the smoke. When he finished smoking his cigarette, he looked at me and acted as if nothing happened. I still continued covering my nose because I also hate pollution from vehicles. After a few minutes, I was shocked when he suddenly covered his nose as a truck went pass our jeepney emitting black smoke. I wouldn't have been shocked if I hadn't known he was a smoker but since I saw how much of a smoker he was (he couldn't even skip it while inside a public transportation), I was confused why he had to cover his nose when he is used to sniffing cigarette smoke anyway. Is there really any difference? Do smokers here do the same thing as well? I want to hear different views from both smokers and non-smokers..I also want to know if I am just over reacting..Thanks!

hotsummer (2756) | 4 months ago | yeah or he may be thinking that pollution is worse than the effect of smoking. it is really funny. if he is concerned about pollution he should stop smoking. or maybe the smell of pollution is too much for him but he can bear with the smell of his own smoke. but for me the smell of smoke coming from cigarette and from automobiles are unbearable for me. so i close my each time i can't bear the smell of it any more.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | i have to agree. maybe the effect of smoke from the cigarette and from the vehicles are way different for him but for a nonsmoker like me, they are both unbearable. too bad it seems like he does not know that his smoking also contributes to the pollution in general..very selfish person..

2. Hatley (21585) | 4 months ago | hi calai618 I too am amazed that after polluting all the air arouond him he wou ld be bothered by outside pollution. I am allergic to smoke from cigarettes and I know that they are bad for your health. they can damage your lungs and your heart. My hubby smoked three packs a day and finally died from one heart attack too many, his doctors said smoking killed him. smokers here in theUS do the same thing too.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | im sorry about his death.. yes we nonsmokers know those negative effects of smoking and i am sure it is also safe to say that even the smokers themselves know these effects. they just choose to retain the habit. they for sure have their own reasons and they value those reasons more than the negative and fatal effects of it non just to the people and their environment but to themselves.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | very very true! i think they are powerless even to themselves because they can't even control their negative urges. i wouldn't have cared if that's what they want to do with their lives but since even nonsmokers and innocent people are equally in danger, then these people should be punished.

4. rosepedal64 (1495) | 4 months ago | I am a smoker myself. Under no condition do I condone his actions. He should have respected the fact that there was other people around. You should never smoke in a group of people no matter where you are. Being a smoker for many years now, I do know what my dangers are for myself. It is not that I don't care it is that I am addicted to them..It is not easy to quit cold turkey..The smoke that we inhale is totally different from the smoke from a vechicle. It is not as strong smelling to us as the smoke from a vechicle like you described. Great discussion and you have a nice day...

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | thank you rosepedal64 for pointing that out because we nonsmokers,or at least me, qualify all of those as plainly pollution. i am also aware that there are many smokers like you who are aware of the dangers and are too addicted to quit but have the decency to not smoke where prohibitted. i just hope all smokers are like you though. if they can't help the world by minimizing pollution through not smoking, at least be decent enough to discretely smoke and not endanger other people's lives directly. thanks again!

rosepedal64 (1495) | 3 months ago | You are very welcome. I do highly respect those that don't smoke. I also respect the eldery in any situtation, and feel that everyone should do the same. They have lived their lives for the younger generation to continue with their lives. Have a great day and keep smiling..

5. mipen2006 (2451) | 4 months ago | Hi calai, I was a heavy smoker for many years, but gave up around thirty years ago, so my response may be a little biased. By covering his face the person you mention is showing he is aware of pollution. However, because he smoked in the jeepney, shows he is a selfish, individual, and doesn't respect other human beings. I would say this kind of person has few friends. I don't think you're overreacting one bit!

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | thank you for the response mipen2006! i am glad i encountered a person like you who succeeded at quitting smoking. it just goes to show that nothing is really impossible if people would just have the willpower to do so. i hope to meet more and more people like you!

6. Sreekala (1806) | 4 months ago | Hi calai,
Very funny guy, he can’t leave his cigarette at any cost and he doesn’t bother about other co-passenger too but when the smoke comes from other vehicle he become concerned about his health. In my observation it may be an automatic reflex action by his unconscious mind. If his conscious mind is concerned about his health he would have stopped smoking or at least not to smoke in public places.
I don’t think you over acted; it is a natural reaction especially by the non-smokers. I do the same when passing the smokers and if I was in your place I would have asked to that person to stop the smoking. Thanks for sharing such a funny incident.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | thank you Sreekala! yes i think that's the accurate explanation. his unconscious mind knows how to deal with pollution but his conscious mind is just too reluctant to follow suit.. yes funny indeed..though it still pisses me off when i recall it, i just laugh because it's really very ironic..

7. Shames (1427) | 4 months ago | Hi calai.Well it is a fact that even those who smoke a lot dont like it and cover their nose when somebody else smokes.Forget about exhaust from vehicles. It is a bit ironical and funny but that is how it is.And I guess they would have never started smoking in the first place if they had to inhale from nose.Taking smoke through mouth and through nose is entirely two different things..

|
calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | wow thank you for pointing that out shames because i never knew that. but i just don't understand it a little..does that mean that when people smoke, they try to not inhale the smoke through their noses? can smokers really smoke and not smell the smoke?

8. idaantipolo (429) | 4 months ago | I think when he did that, it is because smoke from vehicles aren't the same as the one as he emits in terms of smell and where it came from. Smokers, as you know do not think that the smoke that come from the cigarettes aren't as deadly as the one being emitted by vehicles, but for us non-smokers they are relatively the same.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | thank you for the response pillusch! the philippines actually have laws against smoking in public vehicles and establishments and i am sure that person knows that. that's actually part of my surprise that despite all of us the existence of such laws and having common sense, the guy still chose to smoke anyway.

calai618 (845) | 3 months ago | it really is refreshing to know that there are real people who can actually quit smoking. im glad you have that willpower which help you get through your smoking addiction. i hope more people will realize that there are just too much negative effects of smoking not just for them but for the entire population and even the whole world. happy mylotting!
