I am back from my trip to France, we all finished work there earlier than expected, I don't know why as I don't think we worked particularly fast.
The weather was sooooo hot on the first few days I didn't think I'd be able to cope until the end but luckily it became breezy afterwards, and eventually stayed cloudy during work time.
For those who don't know I went to work on a vineyard and help with the grape harvest, I learned a lot about how they make their wine, and the Farmer was really nice but didn't speak a word of English but I did my best to understand..
I got covered in lots of cuts, either from falling over (a lot) or the knife they give us to use, for some reason at first I hadn't expected it to be sharp!
The views were great and you could see so far, some of the vineyards were pretty much on cliffs, it atleast felt like it. Everyone would struggle there and there would be lots of people falling. So I am covered in a big graze on my arm from when I tumbled!!

There were lots of great bugs, and people seemed to get the impression I liked them, so whenever a lizard or preying mantic, spider or 2.5 inch grasshoppers (or whatever they were) got into the buckets I had to be called to the rescue. My favourite bit one day was getting a lizard out of someone's bucket as after it ran all the way up my arm to my shoulder then leapt off. lol

I met a lovely dog there called Vino, but he was 100% of the time chained to a wall, he would sleep in the shed but still be chained up, we asked if they wanted us to walk him but the farmer said he preferred him there, so it was a sad goodbye for me and dog when I left.

I met a lot of great people, from France, Poland, and a really nice girl from Iceland. I have all their details so will hopefully see them all again soon.
My back still really hurts, no jokes please but we spent about 60 hours bent over! I haven't hurt so much in my back before and my legs hurt from struggling up the hills for 8 hours a day.

I have lots of photos but I will work out a way of showing them another time.
Xxxxxxxxxx

This is indeed so cool to be there, I have been there many times too as my boyfriend was living there in France, so we have both been having holidays in Paris, now he has come in London where I live so we rarely go there now only in Holidays.

I like to go to Paris but I find it very expensive. It is good to be back in England at the moment though although it doesn't look as nice as where I was..

Welcome back Gorjess.
My husband work many months in France in catering, now he came back here in derby and got a high paid work. So maybe he will going back to France for holiday only and with me and our son. I love to visit Paris and Normandy, very interesting place.

Yep the area I stayed in was really nice, and had great views, I drove all the way down there and really enjoyed that part of it. I find driving in France much less stressful than some places in the UK.

hey there. Although I haven't been in France before, i heard that their vineyards are one of the best attractions there, aside from the popular tourist destinations there like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The climate is supposed to be cooler than usual i think because grapes don't thrive well in heat. I live in the Philippines so we are used to heat. btw, which grape producing region did you go? Beaujolais? Bordeaux? Champagne? or other hard-to-pronounce and hard-to-spell countries? Hope i could get to go there too at least once in my life. Im really fascinated in wines, so grapes and vineyards also interests me.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

The climate where I was staying was boiling, as it was in the south of France. I was in the Beaujolais region, we drove through Champagne, and of course had some champagne there although I didn't actually like the one we tried!
It is really hard work but well worth it, if you find a paid job then it is great, we had a place with accommodation and food, as well as pay so I was quite lucky.

I am really glad that you had a lovely time on your working holiday in France. The farmer didn't speak English so it gave you a wonderful opportunity with the French language. I am sorry to hear that all the work made your back ache. It is great that you made many new friends and will be able to stay in contact with them. I hope to see some of your photos sometime. Welcome home.

Thanks very much, I will organise the photos so they are in one place and hopefully put a link up to them all at some point.
The wife spoke great English so it was helpful at times!

lolHello Gorgeous Gorjess! How are you? It's seems that you had a nice trip. and you didn't speak a word there? you should rest a bit. probably you were enjoying too much on your trip. well, it's just the same here. well, it's kinda hot and cold here too. lol

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

I did speak a word there, of both French and English! There were many French, some could speak a little English, two Polish people who were pretty much fluent in English, an icelandic girl who was lovely and spoke perfect English, and two other English kids.
Everyone was really nice, there were a few odd jobs but it is what you expect! Xxx

Hey welcome back! thumbup

I expected you tomorrow and I think your stalker did too (or he wouldn't be asleep right now lol)

So it was hot eh? Not the same sort of heat at as in UK right? Did it cool down enough for you in the evenings and the night? How was driving in Paris? The food?

Sad about Vino being chained up but that is quite usual over here on farms and the like. How long did it take you to drive back?

So many questions but juast think how many discussions you can start now telling us all about it!

Good to know you are safely home! xx

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

I said a quick hello to him yesterday but pretty much fell asleep straight after, I am still pretty tired today.
It was really hot but the evenings got quite cold really, towards the end it got quite windy and cloudy but it made the views look even nicer!
I didn't drive in Paris, but the whole drive was easy and fun, the journey back wasn't brilliant weather so it wasn't as nice to look around but it was still great. The food was really nice and lots of it but I think I lost a bit of weight over there as my appetite didn't really get too big as I was mainly too hot, and we were working so much that it explains why I lost a little weight. Everyone else gained it through eating too much!
I drove most of the day Thursday with a Polish couple which was fun, stayed in cheap hotel then drove maybe 4 hours until a ferry to UK, then 2 hours after that.
There are many discussions I can start now!

myLot reputation of 78/100. mysdianait (12142)   ranked 1,246 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

I find too that the heat here puts a halt to appetite during the summer but then the cold winter makes up for it. I prefer it over here though and I am only across the Alps (behind them) compared to where you were.

I am so pleased you enjoyed it and have such pleasant happy memories. Are you thinking of going back next year too?

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

I think a few of the people who went for the first time like us may consider going back, and I know that many of the French who lived nearby do it each year so there would be familiar faces if I went to the same place.
Here is a little photo, I just managed to poke my face in in time for the photo!

Will you still keep in touch with the farmer? Maybe you could go and visit before next autumn and see Vino again?

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

We still have their email, so if we do it again next year I won't have to pay the big amount I had to pay for an agency to give me their details! I would love to see Vino again, I would be gutted if he wasn't there for any reason!!

Hello gorjess!

Welcome back. Am i glad that you came back to the site too. thumbup The way you described the place feels like i can imagine myself there. rolleyes

I can see that it's very tiring to work at the farm. You are also a friend of insects, which is a very unique quality for girls. I could say that the dog is very sad with you leaving *like what mike felt*. w00tjk.

I think you really had fun there*not the 60 hours bent over part* though. I am glad your back, Take a rest now and pretty soon you can join the action here.;)

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

Well maybe I was okay with the insects because I had gloves on, I noticed soon in that there were many big spiders, and there was no choice but to carry on as I had work to do!
I didn't like the bugs going into my bucket as they'd be squished into wine so I tried to get some out some of the time.
I have a really nice picture of me with the dog when I am saying good bye, it makes me sad, I miss him! I probably missed out on a lot here, and I know it is very hard to catch up on mylot so hopefully people will fill me in!

myLot reputation of 95/100. koalapenguin (1365)   ranked 1,865 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

Hello Gorjess,

Welcome back. I bet you have gain lot of special experience in France! I never visit France before. And I had never see a vineyard. I have seen from the television proggrame about harvest grape and the process making wine. It is so interesting. I hope I can have a real experience like you.

Do take rest since you just come back and take good care of your back! Hope to see your loots of photo.

myLot reputation of 85/100. Gorjess (1072)   ranked 1,177 out of 35,350 in people  4 months ago

Thank you, it was a great experience, France is a nice place to visit, and it was great to work there and leave with a nice bit of pay too!
It is very interesting but it is very hard work to keep up with the pace of picking the grapes. You look up and see that everyone is ahead even if you are working fast, and not only that the heat is just so intense sometimes, but you have to keep on going!

Hi, Gorjess! Welcome back! happy Glad to know that you got back safe and have gained knowledge about wine making despite the language barrier. From your descriptions and the minor injuries you went through, that was indeed a tough job and I would like to experience it someday, and one of the best things for sure meeting new friends. Anyway, the bugs' story was kind of funny and I can actually imagine it. lol Well, go get some rest and hope you are feeling much better soon. Take care!

It was very, very tough, some hills were so steep you'd literally have to climb up parts, and in the blazing heat. The guys would bring around water and wine on our drinks breaks though!
