Hello mylot! |
|
I am back from my trip to France, we all finished work there earlier than expected, I don't know why as I don't think we worked particularly fast. The weather was sooooo hot on the first few days I didn't think I'd be able to cope until the end but luckily it became breezy afterwards, and eventually stayed cloudy during work time. For those who don't know I went to work on a vineyard and help with the grape harvest, I learned a lot about how they make their wine, and the Farmer was really nice but didn't speak a word of English but I did my best to understand.. I got covered in lots of cuts, either from falling over (a lot) or the knife they give us to use, for some reason at first I hadn't expected it to be sharp! The views were great and you could see so far, some of the vineyards were pretty much on cliffs, it atleast felt like it. Everyone would struggle there and there would be lots of people falling. So I am covered in a big graze on my arm from when I tumbled!!
There were lots of great bugs, and people seemed to get the impression I liked them, so whenever a lizard or preying mantic, spider or 2.5 inch grasshoppers (or whatever they were) got into the buckets I had to be called to the rescue. My favourite bit one day was getting a lizard out of someone's bucket as after it ran all the way up my arm to my shoulder then leapt off.
I met a lovely dog there called Vino, but he was 100% of the time chained to a wall, he would sleep in the shed but still be chained up, we asked if they wanted us to walk him but the farmer said he preferred him there, so it was a sad goodbye for me and dog when I left.
I met a lot of great people, from France, Poland, and a really nice girl from Iceland. I have all their details so will hopefully see them all again soon. My back still really hurts, no jokes please but we spent about 60 hours bent over! I haven't hurt so much in my back before and my legs hurt from struggling up the hills for 8 hours a day.
I have lots of photos but I will work out a way of showing them another time. Xxxxxxxxxx

1. med889 (2804) | 4 months ago | This is indeed so cool to be there, I have been there many times too as my boyfriend was living there in France, so we have both been having holidays in Paris, now he has come in London where I live so we rarely go there now only in Holidays.

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | Yep the area I stayed in was really nice, and had great views, I drove all the way down there and really enjoyed that part of it. I find driving in France much less stressful than some places in the UK.

3. aylim14 (119) | 4 months ago | hey there. Although I haven't been in France before, i heard that their vineyards are one of the best attractions there, aside from the popular tourist destinations there like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The climate is supposed to be cooler than usual i think because grapes don't thrive well in heat. I live in the Philippines so we are used to heat. btw, which grape producing region did you go? Beaujolais? Bordeaux? Champagne? or other hard-to-pronounce and hard-to-spell countries? Hope i could get to go there too at least once in my life. Im really fascinated in wines, so grapes and vineyards also interests me.

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | The climate where I was staying was boiling, as it was in the south of France. I was in the Beaujolais region, we drove through Champagne, and of course had some champagne there although I didn't actually like the one we tried! It is really hard work but well worth it, if you find a paid job then it is great, we had a place with accommodation and food, as well as pay so I was quite lucky.

4. maximax8 (10621) | 4 months ago | I am really glad that you had a lovely time on your working holiday in France. The farmer didn't speak English so it gave you a wonderful opportunity with the French language. I am sorry to hear that all the work made your back ache. It is great that you made many new friends and will be able to stay in contact with them. I hope to see some of your photos sometime. Welcome home.

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | I did speak a word there, of both French and English! There were many French, some could speak a little English, two Polish people who were pretty much fluent in English, an icelandic girl who was lovely and spoke perfect English, and two other English kids. Everyone was really nice, there were a few odd jobs but it is what you expect! Xxx

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | I said a quick hello to him yesterday but pretty much fell asleep straight after, I am still pretty tired today. It was really hot but the evenings got quite cold really, towards the end it got quite windy and cloudy but it made the views look even nicer! I didn't drive in Paris, but the whole drive was easy and fun, the journey back wasn't brilliant weather so it wasn't as nice to look around but it was still great. The food was really nice and lots of it but I think I lost a bit of weight over there as my appetite didn't really get too big as I was mainly too hot, and we were working so much that it explains why I lost a little weight. Everyone else gained it through eating too much! I drove most of the day Thursday with a Polish couple which was fun, stayed in cheap hotel then drove maybe 4 hours until a ferry to UK, then 2 hours after that. There are many discussions I can start now!

mysdianait (12142) | 4 months ago | I find too that the heat here puts a halt to appetite during the summer but then the cold winter makes up for it. I prefer it over here though and I am only across the Alps (behind them) compared to where you were.
I am so pleased you enjoyed it and have such pleasant happy memories. Are you thinking of going back next year too?

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | Well maybe I was okay with the insects because I had gloves on, I noticed soon in that there were many big spiders, and there was no choice but to carry on as I had work to do! I didn't like the bugs going into my bucket as they'd be squished into wine so I tried to get some out some of the time. I have a really nice picture of me with the dog when I am saying good bye, it makes me sad, I miss him! I probably missed out on a lot here, and I know it is very hard to catch up on mylot so hopefully people will fill me in!

8. vingyan06 (1254) | 4 months ago | Hello Gorjess,
Welcome back. I bet you have gain lot of special experience in France! I never visit France before. And I had never see a vineyard. I have seen from the television proggrame about harvest grape and the process making wine. It is so interesting. I hope I can have a real experience like you.
Do take rest since you just come back and take good care of your back! Hope to see your loots of photo.

Gorjess (1072) | 4 months ago | Thank you, it was a great experience, France is a nice place to visit, and it was great to work there and leave with a nice bit of pay too! It is very interesting but it is very hard work to keep up with the pace of picking the grapes. You look up and see that everyone is ahead even if you are working fast, and not only that the heat is just so intense sometimes, but you have to keep on going!
