Ipod on a trip

I was wondering whether anyone who had an ipod used it in the same manner as we used the cd player, and the mp3 player when traveling in a car? That is, instead of putting the ear plugs on and listening to it as kids are apt to do, they plugged the ipod into the speaker or where ever? Now we have a portable speaker that we use at home and it is a bit too big to lug around. So I was wondering whether anyone had taken their ipod and plugged it into the car so that when they were on the trip, they would have their own music or audio books to listen to?
I suppose parents would be more interested in this, getting their kids to listen to good music or good books rather then stuff that is not that enlightening.

I heard about that, but we have not asked the salesman at Future Shop or Best Buy about it. It would save a lot of trouble though, but it would be better if I could just take it with me and say to someone who drives us and we are planning a long trip, and I have something on the Ipod that they would want to listen to, like a sermon or a book, or instead of them putting the book on several Cds, lend them the ipod to put the book on and we can listen that way.

I think it would be kind of hard to type or surf the net and watch the road at the same time.
but when we go in a car ride, most of us listen to the music, or we get a Cd and listen to that and it could be anything from our favorite artist, a lecture, how to do, or a book.

I've never used the speakers in the car for my ipod when traveling. To be quite honest, my taste in music is much different than my parents so there is no way they'd be comfortable listening to mine and I'd sure feel like I'd lose my mind if I had to listen to theirs! LOL Of course my parents don't have ipods and can barely use a computer so, I guess it's a moot point. Now it could work if I traveled with my adult daughter and her sons, we all like similar music. But thus far, we haven't tried it, instead enjoying our own individual ipods and listening to them that way.
