History or His-story? |
|
I can't mention any names, but after all of these years of believing what I learned in my history books, my beliefs have been challege so I wanted to get some opinions. i was told by a history professor that what I know about Christopher Columbus is not true. He says that Christopher Columbus was a womanizing alchoholic who didn't discover America, but accidentally ended up here . He thought he was off course and had ended up in India and that"s why he referred to Native Americans as indians. Do you think there is any truth to this or is the professor just a pro-flook?

1. vonmac (2489) | 4 months ago | Does it matter whether the bold Christopher was blown a bit off course or not? I heard the womanizing thought he had found India version as well, and I see no reason not to believe it Its hardly a life changing discovery though is it? What beliefs exactly have you had challenged, that part I am curious about.

| clarkbody (88) | 4 months ago | Honestly, It's not so much what I was taught that puzzled me about his statements, but what he added to what the history taught. My books said nothing about womanizing and drunkeness. At this point it really doesn't matter, but I thuoght it would be an interesting conversation to share. He also spoke of him being the cause of gun violence and disease. He says that guns, alcohol and rat infested ships is what killed off the Native Americans population. For me, these were very disturbing accusations.

vonmac (2489) | 4 months ago | I always was led to believe it was white men and guns who largely killed off the native american population, shows how much I know. I did hear that Columbus might have imported STD,s, but that might not be right

2. AniruS (155) | 4 months ago | Your professor is correct, though I am not sure about the womanizing alcoholic part.
Europeans had enjoyed a peaceful route to India and China which went thorough Constantinople, modern day Turkey which was ruled by Mongols. After the fall of Constantinople to Turks, this route became difficult and most of the Europeans rulers sponsored voyages to discover a sea route to the Orient.
Most of the sailors headed east, but Columbus believed that the western route would be much easier and shorter. After much effort his request was funded by Queen Isabella of Spain and Columbus set out for his westward journey. When he first hit the land after crossing Atlantic Ocean he believed it to be India and settled there and named all the natives as Indians. Moreover he did not land on the main land America, but on islands that we now know as the Caribbean Islands.

3. sweetashoney (766) | 4 months ago | I don't know if it's true are not. I also was taught that Columbus discovered America but when I got older I read somewhere that Columbus was not the first one to land in America, I forget who suppose to be the first one. It would be interesting to find out if what your professor said was true or not, they have studied all this kind of stuff so most likely it's true.

4. grandpa_lash (1704) | 4 months ago | Apart from the fact that Columbus was far from the first, the rest of what your teacher told you appears to be true. I'm actually surprised that this came as a shock to you, it's been known for half a century at least.
Some feminist academic writers, on the other hand, refer to history as denying and hiding Herstory, with considerable justification to my mind. It was the female ruled Sumerian civilisation that invented writing, for instance, some 7000 years BCE.
Most history taught at junior levels is questionable and needlessly simplistic, since educators seem to believe that children are incapable of dealing with the complexities of actual history.

| 5. LilDemonlady (56) | 4 months ago | There are documents that show the Columbus was a womanizer and that he drank alot. So what your professor says is true to my knowledge and He thought he was finding India..also other nice tidbit is that even after it was discovered that he didn't find India but another country. He Refused to believe that he landed somewhere else. Until he died he insisted that he had landed in India.

Many thing happened long long ago,and it has several versions .Nobody can explain it clearly.Nobody can know which version is true .And nobody want to choose which is the most believably.May be one time we hear a story like this,we will speak loudly "oh,that unbelievably!"

| 8. roadki11 (26) | 4 months ago | I've always found the biggest myth about Columbus is that he was the only or one of few who believed the earth was round. That was a well known fact. He had trouble getting funding for his trip because most people thought the earth was bigger than he thought. And they were right. He seriously miscalculated the diameter and would have died along with everybody on his ships had there not been a continent there to land on.
He wrote a letter to Spain talking about how naive the indigenous people were, and how, because they were so trusting, it would be easy to enslave them.
There are tons of history myths like this one.
Edison didn't invent the light bulb. The emancipation proclamation didn't free the slaves. Mussolini didnt' make the trains run on time.

9. crystaltips (169) | 4 months ago | I have never heard he was a womanizing alcoholic, but that is quite plausible. As for discovering America accidentally and thinking it was India, I believe that is true, yes. You should look it up on the internet.

10. sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | I do not know about the womanizing alcoholic part of this, but back in the day when I attended school the rest of this was common knowledge. We still were taught that Columbus did discover America although I think we were also taught that it was disputed as to who made it here first (Columbus or another explorer???).
Here is something that could further blow your mind. I was reading a book recently that there is possible evidence that the Israelites were here in America during the reign of King David and King Solomon of the Bible. I have not been able to verify this but it sure gives us food for thought.
