What Is Privacy? |
| |
| Recently, I just do not feel right about how the Australia Customs are conducting with arrival passengers from overseas. Just for brevity, officers have been going through passenger's laptop, notebooks and now cellphones - not for contraband but "pornography"! Believe me, I am for stringent and comprehensive security protocols and checks but I just cannot accept going through personal and sensitive items like laptops, notebooks and even cellphones. I am sure other than that occasional misdemeanors, I am sure there are things like sensitive office documents, trade secrets or other confidential documentations and information. I do not about you, but I just feel that these people have really crossed the line here. Do you think these people are overdoing things here? Ref: http://www.relax.com.sg/r... | | | | | |

| | What? Why? Means what about privacy? This is not right, not wrong either. Wrong cause privacy is invaded. Right cause if they do it in a good manner it is good for security itself. | | | | | | |

| | Oops! this is wrong. Why do they go into the details when they know that it is an important personality or thing. Why don't the lower workers understand simple things. They need to be more knowledgeable and sensible. | | | |

| | I have a friend who works at customs. His job is to watch all the adult content and decide whether it is obscene or illegal. I can understand where you are coming from but they do catch people with things like violence, children, animals etc. which in my opinion is worth a little embarassment if they officers see something you don't want them seeing. | | | | | | |

| | Right they should be more concerned about things that make terrorism possible. Like the explosives. I agree with you. | | | |

| | It's not the soft core and the stuff you see in magazines they are concerned about. It's what they deem "obscene" and the flaw with that is that it's subjective. What one officer might find obscene another one won't. When I've been traveling on the forms they give listing contraband items, they usually list obscene materials which I'm guessing is why they do this. In terms of terrorism, they do look at cell phones and computers to see what people are up to pretty much. I heard about a guy being detained and questions because he had an animated screensaver of the twin towers collapsing. I do agree with you, I wouldn't want my privacy invaded regardless of whether I had adult material on my laptop or not. | | | |

| | l33tgirl, As a customs officer, I feel that they have a much higher call to ensure the safety and security of the country. And, I just do not see anything conducive coming out with whatever they are doing currently. Besides, the line is quite clear here and any oversight in their duties would actually compromise national security. Other than whatever is stored in peoples' laptops or notebooks or cellphones. I hope that they will realize this and not be deemed as unnecessary for what they have done. | | | |

| | Skysuccess, I have never dealt with anyone violating me in that way, yet. Do they really have time to go through alot of files when people have to board a plane? Maybe in time they will find this is just too time consuming. I can't see them being able to pay security to go through files. I think you brought up something important that if you work for a company maybe those files that contain trade secrets should not be exposed. I wonder if there is anything that can be done about that? Maybe if companies that have employees who travel will really fear that company secrets might get into public hands? What about celebrities traveling that might be have information they might not want exposed? I am sure this is more detrimental to people who travel alot, and usually have financial backing to change laws? | | | |
