White House to Massachusetts: change the rules to fill Kennedy seat now  email this discussion to a friend?

Obama pulls string to over step Massachusetts law governing the vacant Ted Kennedy seat, maybe he can put Micky mouse in there THINK!!!!!

(Obama changes the rules)
If you needed another reason to be cynical about politicians, the president has just provided one in the form of personally urging one of his close supporters -- the governor of Massachusetts -- to change state law so that the governor can immediately appoint a replacement for the seat vacated by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA).

Current Massachusetts law requires a special election – and one is set for January 19. Candidates have announced and have started spending money in their campaigns.

But apparently the White House can’t wait, or, more accurately, wants a hand-picked sure vote for the Obama agenda, NOW. With Sen. Kennedy’s illness and passing the Administration lost a vote, and wants it back ASAP.

Is anyone wondering if we have a Constitution anymore? Telling people not to run for office and changing the rules midstream just to insure that your agenda keeps right on rolling over the citizens of America....sounds like a wanna be dictator has occupied the Oval Office.

Tell Obama that State Governors don't work for him! The president is free to voice his opinion and make recommendations to the Gov of Massachusetts. However the least Obama could do is suggest something legal.

I hope the Governor of Mass. and all those elected by the voters in the state have the gumption to tell Mr. Obama to keep his nose out of the states politics and let them follow what was put into law there by holding an election. Why should Massachusets go to the trouble of changing their state laws to quickly appoint someone to replace Ted Kennedy just to appease the mouthpiece we have in Washington - Mr. Obama.

Too many people have the mind set of "If I don't agree with a law then I ignore it".
The people of Massachusetts need to step up and remind their govnor and hte president that THEY are the ones who get to pick Ted's replacement .....not them.

"a hand-picked sure vote for the Obama agenda" - that says it all. What's a little rule changing? Maybe a few more Czars instead of properly vetted appointees would help too.

Do you have your facts straight on this one, Rose? WHAT "string" did the President pull here? It's been widely reported since BEFORE Senator Kennedy's passing that he (Kennedy) had written a letter asking that the law in his state be changed so they wouldn't be without a second Senator for five months until January when the special election WILL be held. Whomever the governor appoints will NOT be running for reelection in this special election, that's part of the agreement. If the people from Massachusetts has a problem with this they probably would have made it known to their state legislators and Governor, don't you think? This wasn't up to Obama or the White House but if the President let his opinion be known to the Governor of Massachusetts, doesn't HE have a right to free speech like the rest of us do?

I am from Massachusetts and I have a problem with this. Kennedy's political shenanigans go on even after his death. But it does no good for anyone to be opposed, the Democratic governor and legislature will do as they please. The republicans in the legislature did try to blunt this move, to no avail.

It's got nothing to do with who will or will not run for the seat. It has to do with fixing a vote in Congress on the health care bill. When they changed the law, it was because Kennedy urged it so that they could avoid having Governor Romney appoint a Republican to John Kerry's seat should he win the presidency. This time around, they changed it back for yet another political convenience. It's despicable to change the laws to suit your party every few years. It is also despicable to thwart the will of the people by political machinations. BTW, they didn't ask for a referendum on this. How do you know whether or not the people of MA supported it? There's no evidence right now that any representative in any legislative body gives a rat's azz what the people think about anything.

It's wrong for the president to be sticking his nose into state affairs, whether in Massachusetts or New York. The governor of MA did receive correspondence from Obama asking him to urge legislators to take this action.

The people of MA have not had two senators for quite some time, Kennedy was too ill to attend. If he really cared about that he could have resigned many months before his death. That excuse about two senators is very transparent.

Seriously, if this was a republican legislature changing laws to make sure a republican was in the congress to vote the way his party wanted him to, wouldn't you have a problem with this?
