I'm going to India! | | For the past year, I've been contemplating where I want to take my next big trip to and finally narrowed it down to visiting several South American countries (specifically Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile) or India.
My parents do not get my desire to travel at all, and consequently worry about me excessively when I'm away. So mom made me promise that I would find someone to accompany me on both trips. My friend Ray has committed to South America, and as someone who speaks fluent Spanish and rudimentary Portuguese (my Spanish is alright, but my Portuguese is, erm, non-existent?), would be a fantastic person to accompany me, but he's in school and can't afford the trip until early 2011.
So last night I was talking to an American girl I met and befriended in Florence, and we were discussing future travel plans. When I brought up my desire to see India, I couldn't believe how enthusiastic she was.
Finally!
After a year of asking every person I knew with a case of wander-lust about coming to India, someone was just as stoked to see it as me. We've decided that within the year we're going to book our flights, and now I have a worthy goal to put my money towards.
Does anyone who has traveled to India have any suggestions, advice, recommendations, et al? How about a rough budget? I know the Canadian Dollar is worth roughly 44 rupees, but what would 44 rupees buy you?
And I know there are MANY people here who are from India, who could give me an insider's view into your extraordinary country.
We're both very adventurous, pretty bold, experienced travellers who don't mind roughing it at all to get the most authentic feel for where we are, so anything you feel is worthwhile is worthwhile mentioning.

What we call 14 kt gold, is not considered gold there. It barely ranks as costume jewelry.
If the HST is successful, you won't be leaving then either.

BCMike (3316) | 4 months ago | It is the reason so many people will once again exodus BC. This retarded government situation is the reason BC lags behind in so many ways.
The province with so many intelligent and innovative people continually fighting politicians. I wish I had some money to spend to buy ad space. BC Refed is the only political party in all of Canada that is interested in slapping a dirty big leash on our out of control politicians.
When you go, I hope you find the peace and fulfillment you deserve.

You can visit Goa for its beaches, Hill stations in North and East or North East - Shimla, Manali,Darjeeling, Ranikhet,Nainital,Ladakh,Srinagar and many more .
Southern Hill stations like Ooty,Kodaikanal,Coorg,Araku and more .
Then;you have places like Khajurao,Panchmarhi,Tirupati, shirdi for spiritual, historic and cultural reasons .
There is a lot more . some glimpses:
For more check:

As for 44 Rupees - it could get you:
1) A good full time meal in a budget restaurant or a "Dhabba" or 2) 3 to 4 good icecreams . or 3) 2 Litres of processed milk . or 4) Some good Paranthas (processed wheat flour and Maida mixed with fillings like Onions,Green chillies,Mint,Coriander Leaves etc ) at Chandni chowk . or
"practically nothing but a bottle of water " at a 5 star hotel.
How much Indian 44 Rupees gets you depends a lot on many factors:
1) Whether you are travelling in a bigger city like Mumbai,Hyderabad,Delhi,Chennai or in a smaller city like Ludhiana,Dharamshala,McLeodganj,Ambala etc
2) Whether it is a big tourist place? At some of the tourist places; you may be charged more than at other places .
3)Whether you are staying at a budget hotel or in a 3/4/5 star Hotel .
Potatoes,
Hopefully this helps .

I would assume we'll likely be flying into a larger centre like Delhi or Mumbai, and likely would want to spend a bit of time in the cities getting a feel for things.
As for accomodations -- she works for a non-profit organization in Missouri and I do administrative work, so we'll probably be going for as budget friendly as we can. Youth and backpacker hostels -- that sort of thing.:)
I'm very happy to see that India has a comprehensive rail system.:) As adventurous as we both are, I don't think either of us would be brave enough to drive around India.

breepeace (2278) | 4 months ago | I agree completely, dragon, and I'm not sure they doubt how much it broadens my horizons, but I don't think they get my desire to see the world as opposed to settling down, getting married and buying a house like is the norm (especially in this area). I'd prefer to spend my money on a fullfilling trip somewhere as opposed to a car, a house, or any of those other possessions people inevitably judge you on.

breepeace (2278) | 4 months ago | LOL Well I'm certainly not planning on coming with only 44 Rs.:) I was just pointing out that it's the equivalent of a dollar, and was kind of curious what sorts of things you could buy for roughly a dollar Canadian in India.
The Taj Mahal and Mumbai are definitely on our list, and I was just looking up the marble rocks -- in Bhedaghat, correct? It sounds very beautiful.
We're thinking we'll probably go to Goa at some point during the trip for some relaxation, but as for the rest, we're very open to suggestion.
