Bored of education | | As I sit here typing this, I often wonder where I'd be in life if I had a degree somewhere. With a high school education, and plenty of time to make up my mind, you'd think I'd either be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist. I could be any number of htings, instead I chose to sluff off, and not take my work life seriously. Just this past summer, I enrolled in a nurse assistant program. It's a six week course, and you have classes two times a week. The tuition was reasonable, especially since I qualified for a grant. Unfortunately, I feel like it's rushed. How much can you learn in that time frame? Besides reading and studying the work book, what other "hands on" opportunities can I allow myself to pass certification? Have you ever had quandaries where you felt like you weren't learning enough? There is a lot of frustration with extending your education. Decisions on what school to attend, degree programs, what is the success rate of students? Every question is mulled over, and picked apart. Then we get bored with the course, and decide on doing something else. Does this sounds like you? What are your thoughts?

I graduated high school and started college but got pregnant with my daughter so I dropped out because I was embarrassed. They a few years later I went to a smaller business college but dropped out again once I got a decent job. I wish I nad never quit in the first place so I could go out and get a good paying job...but that's the choices I made. I stay at home with my kids now so I could totally go back to school, but when I think about having to study and take tests...uugghh that just doesn't sound like fun at all!!!

I was bored and miserable all through school and I have always been happier working. I did get a degree, but it's just a BA in English from a state school and I wasn't happy in college...and now I feel like the degree is worthless and I am in debt for no reason. Everything I'm doing now in terms of launching my own business and working as a library clerk I could have done without a degree, so I feel like I paid $40,000 to go to the IHOP (because that was the best part of college).

I sure would have liked to travel down this road now that I think about it but this is never going to happen for me now. I'm not that old, 34 years of age and if I really pushed myself I suppose that university could become a reality but I have no desire to achieve this. I do however like study and my mindset has changed over the previous years. I decided that I wanted to get into computers, I wanted to enter the IT industry, I haven't achieved this as yet but I have been very busy in terms of study and taking IT courses. I'm presently studying now and I'm about to finish my present course. I took a course last year in computer maintenance and installation and I passed with flying colours. I feel a great sense of achievement from having done this and I feel that it's given me strength to continue pushing forward as it were. At the end of the day, getting these qualifications now must surely make me more marketable and hopefully I stand a chance of getting somewhere with this. I used to quit courses and I never finished them successfully but that has all changed now. When I first started my present course we started with a class of around sixteen others but many have dropped out and there are only about five of us now who are really committed. I want to continue studying for as long as I am able as I feel a sense of self-worth by doing this. Andrew

geminikid (1071) | 4 months ago | That is one place I haven't experienced yet, a university. Sure, college is one thing, but a larger populated school is another. It's such a shame you have to spend more money on a document that won't get your foot in any door, even if you tried. The career world has no sympathy, and that saddens me. Thanks for your response Andrew

| | 6. artistry (755) | 4 months ago | ....Hi geminikid, I love school and although I am not attending now, I hope to return. When I am in school, it is not only the subject of the class that you get involved in and learn about, but I find that all the other people in the class bring a wealth of experience to the classroom and you learn things from them as well. So each time I take a class I come away at the end so much more aware of many things. A degree helps you to advance if you want to get ahead in the professional arena. There are many people who have dropped out of college and are very successful, so college is not the only method to reach success. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, others have not even gone to college. But education helps you to be well rounded. Remember Abraham Lincoln was self educated, and look where he wound up as far as his career goes. Perhaps you might speak with an educational consultant to help you decide what would be the best path for you to take as far as your future is concerned. Take care.

| | 7. MissAmie (580) | 4 months ago | I have the opposite problem as you. I went to college at age 24, loved it and graduated with a 4 year degree in English and journalism. I figured there would be plenty of job possibilities for me, but I have been proven wrong. I graduated in May 2005 and have yet to find a job in my area (within about a 45 minute radius). I am qualified to teach English, to write for a newspaper, write scripts for broadcast journalists, edit, and the list goes on and on. What is my job now? It's funny, actually. I make as much money as I can on the internet each month and I have a little part time work at home job that gets me a few hundred dollars a month. Before I went to college, I had a great job. I made plenty of money and was happy. I even asked to VOLUNTEER to teach English as a second language to a group of latino students at a local adult education center. I couldn't even get that job and they wouldn't even have had to pay me. After that, I kind of gave up. I have 2 young children, so I'm glad that because of my husband I have the choice to work or not. The small amount of money I do make helps out some, so it makes me feel like I contribute more to the home. Plus, I just enjoy earning my own money. I enjoyed every second of my time in college, but now that I've been out for a while and I can't put off student loan payments any longer, I'm wondering if college was really worth it after all. My hubby, who never went to college, is the main breadwinner in our household.

Don't need my egree, and I'm constantly being sent on courses to learn new things, but I think i learn more from doing and watching the people who are good at what they do!!
