As I sit here typing this, I often wonder where I'd be in life if I had a degree somewhere. With a high school education, and plenty of time to make up my mind, you'd think I'd either be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist. I could be any number of htings, instead I chose to sluff off, and not take my work life seriously. Just this past summer, I enrolled in a nurse assistant program. It's a six week course, and you have classes two times a week. The tuition was reasonable, especially since I qualified for a grant. Unfortunately, I feel like it's rushed. How much can you learn in that time frame? Besides reading and studying the work book, what other "hands on" opportunities can I allow myself to pass certification? Have you ever had quandaries where you felt like you weren't learning enough? There is a lot of frustration with extending your education. Decisions on what school to attend, degree programs, what is the success rate of students? Every question is mulled over, and picked apart. Then we get bored with the course, and decide on doing something else. Does this sounds like you? What are your thoughts?rolleyes

That sounds like me exactly!! I graduated high school and started college but got pregnant with my daughter so I dropped out because I was embarrassed. They a few years later I went to a smaller business college but dropped out again once I got a decent job. I wish I nad never quit in the first place so I could go out and get a good paying job...but that's the choices I made. I stay at home with my kids now so I could totally go back to school, but when I think about having to study and take tests...uugghh that just doesn't sound like fun at all!!!

Hello crys, and tests have always been a tricky one for me too. The worry of someone looking over my shoulder, or a glance at my answers is way beyond paranoia. Yet, somewhow, there is a possibility it may happen. Or it also can be a case of wishful thinking. Thanks for your commentthumbup

I know what you mean. Sometimes in life, we are stuck with decisions upon decisions to make. Like wondering what if we make this decision and it's wrong for us, and we appear to like something else and stuff like that. I see this as part and parcel of growing up. This process is certainly not easy and will never be, I suppose. The way I see it, is to go through with my gut feeling, what my heart tells me, using a bit of thinking too; like would it be very beneficial for me in the future and stuff like that. If I make a mistake, I can always try again. No one is perfect and no one makes no mistakes. So give yourself a chance and discover this thing that you have embarked on. Decide whether you like it or not after you have gone through everything. Sometimes, you'll come to love it. The beginning is always the hardest and the rest of it will be easy. Trust me.. wink

Hello Zed, and that is the important part of any education. Gut instinct leads us, the heart feels it, and the head keeps all that in place. We need all three to keep our butts in those class room seats. Thanks for your responsehappy

I understand the frustration and boredom because I was never one who thrived in the classroom environment. I even hated kindergarten. I was bored and miserable all through school and I have always been happier working. I did get a degree, but it's just a BA in English from a state school and I wasn't happy in college...and now I feel like the degree is worthless and I am in debt for no reason. Everything I'm doing now in terms of launching my own business and working as a library clerk I could have done without a degree, so I feel like I paid $40,000 to go to the IHOP (because that was the best part of college).

myLot reputation of 97/100. geminikid (1071)   ranked 96 out of 1,798 in education  4 months ago

I know what you mean Laurie, and I can relate. Seems I blew my education working in fast food, working in maintenance, working in a warehouse, etc. when I could be doing bigger and better things. The debt part stinks the most, especially when the economy is in such a slump. Thanks for your responsew00t

Well, I don't have a degree and I never did well at school! I didn't gain the qualifications needed in order to get to University in the first place. I sure would have liked to travel down this road now that I think about it but this is never going to happen for me now. I'm not that old, 34 years of age and if I really pushed myself I suppose that university could become a reality but I have no desire to achieve this. I do however like study and my mindset has changed over the previous years. I decided that I wanted to get into computers, I wanted to enter the IT industry, I haven't achieved this as yet but I have been very busy in terms of study and taking IT courses. I'm presently studying now and I'm about to finish my present course. I took a course last year in computer maintenance and installation and I passed with flying colours. I feel a great sense of achievement from having done this and I feel that it's given me strength to continue pushing forward as it were. At the end of the day, getting these qualifications now must surely make me more marketable and hopefully I stand a chance of getting somewhere with this. I used to quit courses and I never finished them successfully but that has all changed now. When I first started my present course we started with a class of around sixteen others but many have dropped out and there are only about five of us now who are really committed. I want to continue studying for as long as I am able as I feel a sense of self-worth by doing this. Andrew

That is one place I haven't experienced yet, a university. Sure, college is one thing, but a larger populated school is another. It's such a shame you have to spend more money on a document that won't get your foot in any door, even if you tried. The career world has no sympathy, and that saddens me. Thanks for your response Andrew

I have a degree in Modern languages. I can speak four languages, have spent over 25 years in IT (in which I also have a diploma). I have lived in six countries and have tremendous references from a lot of people for whom I have worked.

I am currently unemployed, not for the first time, and despite applying all over the place, seem to be able to find no way out of itthumbdown. Age is a potential problem, and I cannot afford to work for peanuts, but neither degree nor experience is a guarantee of anything these dayscry.

Hello astonysh, and thanks for sharing your experience. I tend to agree with you about the discrimination theory. Even though these businesses put it on their application forms, doesn't mean it's necessarily true. I just recently applied to a job just like that, and wasn't even called in for an interview. Needless to say, I went to the Department of Labor anyway. So, we will see how far that goesthumbdown

....Hi geminikid, I love school and although I am not attending now, I hope to return. When I am in school, it is not only the subject of the class that you get involved in and learn about, but I find that all the other people in the class bring a wealth of experience to the classroom and you learn things from them as well. So each time I take a class I come away at the end so much more aware of many things.
A degree helps you to advance if you want to get ahead in the professional arena. There are many people who have dropped out of college and are very successful, so college is not the only method to reach success. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, others have not even gone to college. But education helps you to be well rounded. Remember Abraham Lincoln was self educated, and look where he wound up as far as his career goes. Perhaps you might speak with an educational consultant to help you decide what would be the best path for you to take as far as your future is concerned. Take care.

I have the opposite problem as you. I went to college at age 24, loved it and graduated with a 4 year degree in English and journalism. I figured there would be plenty of job possibilities for me, but I have been proven wrong. I graduated in May 2005 and have yet to find a job in my area (within about a 45 minute radius). I am qualified to teach English, to write for a newspaper, write scripts for broadcast journalists, edit, and the list goes on and on. What is my job now? It's funny, actually. I make as much money as I can on the internet each month and I have a little part time work at home job that gets me a few hundred dollars a month.
Before I went to college, I had a great job. I made plenty of money and was happy. I even asked to VOLUNTEER to teach English as a second language to a group of latino students at a local adult education center. I couldn't even get that job and they wouldn't even have had to pay me. After that, I kind of gave up.
I have 2 young children, so I'm glad that because of my husband I have the choice to work or not. The small amount of money I do make helps out some, so it makes me feel like I contribute more to the home. Plus, I just enjoy earning my own money.
I enjoyed every second of my time in college, but now that I've been out for a while and I can't put off student loan payments any longer, I'm wondering if college was really worth it after all. My hubby, who never went to college, is the main breadwinner in our household.

myLot reputation of 97/100. geminikid (1071)   ranked 96 out of 1,798 in education  4 months ago

Hello MissAmie, it seems we both had our significant others being the breadwinners. My ex-wife had a very nice job in billing for a hospital in Boise. She worked hard at it, and truly enjoyed it. She practically made more than half of rent, bills, etc. It was a tense situation, because I was only making a little more than minimum wage at the time. Seems like some get the jobs they fight hard to get, and some others just sit and watch the world pass by. Thanks for your commenthappy

I have a degree, but it hasn't got me very far in life. i drifted around a lot afterwards, then got a career as a bar manager, hated that after 8 years, now work for a charity and love it!! Don't need my egree, and I'm constantly being sent on courses to learn new things, but I think i learn more from doing and watching the people who are good at what they do!!

myLot reputation of 97/100. geminikid (1071)   ranked 96 out of 1,798 in education  4 months ago

That must be a fascinating job, working for a charity. At least it fills your heart with positive, as you reach out to others. I was thinking of doing that, and still may one day. Thanks for your response LittleMrs. thumbup

Hey geminikid! If I may say, a degree isn't necessarily all that it's cracked up to be. I have a degree and so do a good number of people that I know . . . but the line of work that some of them do currently isn't really related to their degrees!

I got a graphics/illustration degree. But before I even graduated college, I got into the printing industry . . . doing pre-production work and working my way up to actually design. My work was "related", but I didn't push myself as hard as I could have. The companies I worked for were literally mom and pop runned places - one company I quit a year after graduating - and the next I stayed on for nearly 15 years. I was just so comfortable where I was at . . . I think I was rather lazy and just stayed on board. I wonder if I made the efforts to search around for a more challenging job that I would have made more moola or had more "prestige". So I think - even if you have a degree - it's where you take it.

I do have a friend our age who is currently going to school to become a chef! He posts all his creations on Facebook (he has been interning at Disney World) and is apparently having the time of his life. I asked him why he decided to do this "now" - and he said because he absolutely loved the idea of cooking for people. So, the love for doing something can be a better motivating factor to get into a particular field - rather than the money or success of it . . . but if you're fortunate, it's possible to get the money and success - hee hee! If you love what you do, most likely you won't get bored and will stick with it.

Another person I know does not have a degree, but had the personality to climb up the ladder in a corporation - and she did. I think a degree is something "nice" you can put on a resume, but I think it's how you apply your yourself to a field that can really make your career take off.

happy

I think that's fantastic, about your friend. Working at Disney World, is definitely a big thing. Everybody seems to go to the places that have a big tourist turnout. Glad he enjoys the revenue. I must agree though, a degree will not always get your foot in the right doors. I currently hold diplomas in Hotel/Restaurant Management, and Private Investigations. I am not working in either career, and there is some frustration on my partangrylol

you shouldnt be bored of educations and remember the adage which says that the moment an individual stop learning that is when he or she stop growing, you need to learn more and exercise your brain and the knowledge you have in you, no knowledge is too little or much to have
