"AP IMPACT: School drinking water contains toxins
By GARANCE BURKE, Associated Press Writer
CUTLER, Calif. – Over the last decade, the drinking water at thousands of schools across the country has been found to contain unsafe levels of lead, pesticides and dozens of other toxins.
An Associated Press investigation found that contaminants have surfaced at public and private schools in all 50 states — in small towns and inner cities alike.
But the problem has gone largely unmonitored by the federal government, even as the number of water safety violations has multiplied.
"It's an outrage," said Marc Edwards, an engineer at Virginia Tech who has been honored for his work on water quality. "If a landlord doesn't tell a tenant about lead paint in an apartment, he can go to jail. But we have no system to make people follow the rules to keep school children safe?""
And what does lead in drinking water do? That's right, it makes you stupid. Suddenly conspiracy theorists aren't so crazy after all.

1. madhuvamsi (422) | 4 months ago | Not many know the rules and regulations or even the dangers of Toxic in water. It is sad that school authorites too do not take precautions to save children drink this health spoiling water. During my younger days, my mom use to give water in water bottle and use to tell me not to drink water outside or even in the school. I think parents only have to take care of their kids and should not expect much from others..Whatever it is shame that not many do not know about laws and in some cases there is no law made to get rid of this contamination of water.

deathspectacular (905) | 4 months ago | People should be able to expect that water that comes from the taps is clean. It is, in fact, the law. It's just that the feds are ignoring it in the cases of public schools. It is not the fault of parents who expect that the utilities they pay for and are by law supposed to be safe to be safe.

2. hornswaggled (1974) | 4 months ago | They came out with a study a few months ago where the states water was all contaminated; with drugs from pharmaceutical companies dumping for the last 25 years. And they admitted it too! And the EPA admitted to letting it slide.....what a crock.... I don't want to even think what they've done to the food sources....

3. artistry (684) | 4 months ago | ...Hi there, Not only the schools, which really is horrible because of the youngsters, and parents should wage a protest war against such a thing. But if you have ever put a water filtering system on your faucet, you will notice that the old filter is black from the contaminates taken out of the water. We pay for water that is not safe to drink, and it is a disgrace. Health care reform? How about cleaning up our water system, before we all drink ourselves to death, many already have, I am sure. The old pipes add to the problem as well. Take it easy.

4. speakeasy (1438) | 4 months ago | I learned long ago not to trust tap water in the US.
After returning to the US after being stationed overseas for several years, my husband and I bought our first house. Nothing was mentioned about the water quality in our subdivision; all we were told was who to contact to get the water turned on and who we had to pay the bill to.
Since, I don't really trust all the chemicals that are added to the water in the first place (chlorine and flouride); we immediately installed a filtration system for our water.
Two years later, our subdivision had a meeting of everyone who lived there. The water was contaminated and had been for a long time. People had been getting sick and getting cancer. If you boiled large quatities of the water down, you ended up with a "brown sludge"; and, the water company had been sited several times in the past for violations (which no one told us about).
We were just glad we had the filtration system. And, when we moved to a new house, we got one for that house too. You can't trust tap water. It is only checked a couple of days per year and they don't test for everything. Contamination levels can fluctuate and the source of th econtamination could be in your own pipes (lead solder).
The best investment you can make for your health and the health of your family and pets is to filter the water yourself.

speakeasy (1438) | 4 months ago | No, what is really scary is the fact that an investigative study found that most bottled waters are nothing more than "tap water" from the bottling plants location and many of them have not even been filtered!
That is scary!

| 5. venkat_readingmails (71) | 4 months ago | oh!!!! not lead. as you might know lead makes children dumber even in their studies and other activities. it hugely impacts the brain and the nervous system. yes, this could be true many schools do not test the quality of the water they provide to the children. not only in the USA, but also in other countries, this seems to happen often. every now and then such type of accusations come to lime light which creates a hype in the media and common people, but again cools before any action is taken. the rest again happens with a routine.
