Do you jump in or stay away from controversial discussions on myLot? |
|
Flipping through the various topics, I am realizing my topic "tendencies" here on myLot. There are some controversial discussions going on about religion, politics, abortion, and other heavy issues - and I can't get myself to jump in to voice my opinions. I don't know how heated these discussions actually become, but I could see myself getting into a huge ongoing debate where I'm not going to budge . . . and I don't feel like getting into a "brawl" on myLot. So I don't go there.
So do you respond to or ignore these controversial subjects? Would you drop a friend if you read that they had complete opposite views from you (regarding religion, politics, abortion, etc)?

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | I have wanted to get involved in those hot discussions, but I could see how one could get pelted by rocks. And I know I would pelt back. Sorry about some of the bad experiences! You're right, no one can win with those type of discussions . . . best to leave them alone!

ayebelle (229) | 3 months ago | Yes no one can win, but its so nice to hear different views and opinions either negative or positive. But we should set our boundaries. We can do debate but in a good way. And good topics deserved for a good discussion.
Hmmmm if someone have bad comments to you,or in your discuassion Does it may affect your rating?

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | ayebelle - Yah, you're right that good topics deserve a good discussion. From the reader's point of view, it certainl gets interesting. It stirs a lot emotions, so heated discussions can go either way - sometimes good, sometimes hairy!! Yah, I wonder if ratings can be efffected . . . that sounds like a myLot discussion right there!

4. maximax8 (10467) | 3 months ago | I respect all different religions although I am not a religious person myself. I think that religion is an interesting topic but I don't find myself discussing it all that much on My Lot.
I do discuss some things I hear about President Obama even though I don't live in the USA.
I am very keen on discussing abortion. I am pro-life and wouldn't ever have an abortion. I like to hear all points of view. I like to help people consider if they consider whether abortion is right or wrong. Sometimes there some really 'hot' discussions on it.
I have some friends on My Lot with opposite view points to me about abortion and that is fine. I wouldn't drop a friend if he or she had opposite view points to me. I like to hear different points of view.

Of course each person has their own perception of what is right or wrong. I began a discussion that a few other members of My Lot made really 'hot'. For me it was just getting different points of view.

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | Yes, religion can be a hot topic. I almost responded to one the other night and I know I would have offended many . . . although I felt a bit offended while reading the start off of the discussion. Reading is one thing . . . joining in on the quarreling is another.

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | You are funny! Good luck if you do jump into any of these hot discussions. I am not ready to take the heat on myLot. Watch out for those flames - some of them can come from unexpected sources!

7. moneymakingtoday (1688) | 3 months ago | i stay away from them. i don't want to be entangled in debates over controversial issues such as religion, culture, etc. nobody wins in those situations because each one roots to his own. this is one big battlefield here in mylot and i just want to enjoy and earn!

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | Yah, I just want to enjoy too! I don't want to get angry or be a stress ball over something on myLot! Nobody wins in these types of discussions, you're right. Oh but sometimes I have the urge to voice my opinions on these heated subjects . . . nah, I'll stay away from it here!

8. snam23 (833) | 3 months ago | I try to stay out of controversial discussions on myLot. I read through some of them and sometimes respond, but like you, I do not want to get into a never-ending debate online. Also, because I cannot devote as much time as I would like to myLot, I would not be able to keep defending my point of view.
I would never drop a friend just because they have the opposite views from me. If we have other similarities like similar interests, then opposing views on other very controversial matters will not make a large difference.

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | I, too, read through some of these controversial discussions. I start to write and then I back out of it as I will spend too much time writing my case (and like you, I don't have a lot of time to spend on myLot as well). And even if I did, I'm sure there would be someone to knock my opinion down. I'll stay out such topics for now!

9. IMEzekieL (512) | 3 months ago | No not really. But I think it depends on the situation. If I feel I have nothing to say then I wouldn't respond. But it doesn't mean I'm avoiding that discussion. I'm an open-minded person so I wouldn't mind indulging on controversial and debatable topics. It's just a matter of self-expression and sharing one's opinions.

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | Sometimes, I guess when one is trying to share their opinions, there are others to knock it down. I haven't jumped into controversial subjects to know what can happen to me personally, but I have read some where people get downright cruel - and I don't know if I like that. That's just life, but I have no need for it on myLot. Good luck when you do indulge in those topics!!

much2say (650) | 3 months ago | Yes, me too! It isn't worth the aggravation, so I think I'll stay away from controversial conversations on myLot too. Who wants to have an argument here - like you said, there are no benefits.
