Why is it???
I'm standing on a open trailer behind a car and the car is traveling at 100mph, silly me jumps in the air and the trailer goes the distance (at 100 mph) and I drop onto the road and kill or near kill myself............
Now same thing,
I'm in a Train carriage the Train is traveling at 100mph I Jump in the air and come down in the same spot I jumped up from,
WHY did I not get left behind and crash into the back wall of the Train Carriage???
(Like when I got left behind when I jumped into the air when I was in the car trailer????)
You can work this one out. Then in short explain it all to me.

hiccup (6438) | 3 months ago | Maybe you need to READ the discussion and digest it's content then see if you can work it all out.
But thinking on all this, some do not have the skills to understand the content but we will not hold that agianst them

3. ElicBxn (15086) | 3 months ago | actually, I've been in an airplane and jumped and the plane moved a bit under me
I think the reason is that you are standing in the - critical part here - OPEN trailer and jump - the air resistance will slow you down and if you are too far to the back, send you off the trailer.
If you are in the carriage of the train, you and the air around you are all traveling at the same speed - so if you jump up, everything else is still traveling at that speed - and if you could jump high enough, you might find that you actually did start to lose ground in the train car as well.
Like me in the plane, I jumped as high as I could, and the plane (and everything in it) were traveling at the same speed, but because the speed the plane was traveling at caused attrition actually was able to act on my body and I lost a few inches in the plane.

hiccup (6438) | 3 months ago | Think of a closed in car then the same car with its top down.
If you jump up in the closed car you come down to where you started, but in a car with an open top the car will go on and more like you will fall/drop on the ground at the point you jumped up (not like in the closed car where you comwe down is in the same spot but could be much further up/down the raod.
With the closed top you are a part of the car but the open top you are not.
This is the part that is hard to understand, WHY when you take the top off the car does it change everything.

hiccup (6438) | 3 months ago | I have know Idea.
I am sure it has to with air presure around you and the space one is in.
Just think of a covertable car, top on, jump around you dont fall out, open top you jump in the air the car moves on and leaves you behind you fall out of the car.
Best way to explain it I think, not good but it does give you the Idea.

hiccup (6438) | 3 months ago | If you are in the train and you jump up and down you are on the same spot, but if you do that in a trailer you end up on the road.
Its like the train has not moved but the trailer did.

hiccup (6438) | 3 months ago | All to do with air pressure, volume,
The air pressure in a closed space is different to the air pressure in a open space.
The second part is in a closed space you are part of the environment and in the open you have your own identity and are a separate vessel.
That's the simple form of it all, hard to understand why, but it happens. in one case you travel at the same speed and in the other you do not.
I must do one on electricity, thats fun.

9. _soonernation_ (762) | 3 months ago | As a couple of others have said, it's the wind resistance (and gravity). If there was no resistance while standing on the open trailer, you WOULD come back down in the same spot. The wind is already pushing you backwards/down; all you do is give into the resostance when you jump up. If the trailer was opened on all sides but the front (had a wind barrier) you would land in the same spot; or very close. In the open trailer, you are actually going backwards/down (because of the resistance), you are forcing yourself to stay in the same motion with the car. More than likely, if traveling at 100mph, you are leaning forward, making your movement down. Friction actually keeps you stuck to the trailer. When you jump up, you release that friction and have no motion; other than the wind pushing you back.
